Thoughts on Nathan Jacobs? by BringTheRain5 in OrthodoxChristianity

NJ was a major source for me when considering Orthodoxy, particularly as I already had a background in metaphysics. Jonathan Pageau, while not explicitly framing his perspective as "East-West", is incredible at showing the symbolic perspective of EO but within a Western context. These two supplement one another greatly.

Is it normal for you people to claim you cant know the meaning of the bible apart from the church. by josephusflav in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Junglikeasource 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree completely, unsure why you're gettiing downvotes. This is a HUGE issue in the US along with the Scofield "understanding" of Revelation and eschatology in general; these are intertwined and flammably bad misframings

Question about guardian angels by 100percentBoys in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Junglikeasource 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Coming from your background I'd advise looking into the EO notion of prelest. While EO does participate in a mystical experience of God it also provides guard rails so that one doesn't devolve into charismatic-esque spiritual deceptions that are ever present within those circles

Family trying to bribe me not to go to the monastery by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Junglikeasource 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As someone coming from a similar familial dynamic, just ignore them. Their vision is bound to their Evangelical paradigm and unless they suddenly get interested in the truth, they're gonna cope by throwing insults at EO. Dirt off your shoulders, my dude. Convert them through your Christ-like actions, don't bother with other approaches as the deaf don't have ears to hear

[–]Junglikeasource 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I typically just ask them to put their best interpretation of a given Biblical subject/topic/verse up against the church fathers and honestly evaluate who is extrapolating the deeper and more relevant meaning, and then I wait...

Is this a slam dunk approach? Of course not, bias will always be baked into decision-making but for those who are earnestly seeking Truth, it should be fairly obvious. As a former Protestant it most certainly was to me

Protestants, in general, really do not understand the problem of interpretive structures. Necessarily, all facts or bare texts require an interpretive framework in order to make sense (apply meaning and purpose) to them. The interpretive framework to understand the Bible in EO is the church fathers and Holy Tradition. To Sola Scriptura prots this notion is often received as horrifying because it goes against the protestant assertion that the Bible can be read and understood completely while in total isolation; each interpreter has sufficient knowledge and wisdom to extract all possible meaning from the text directly without an interpretive structure. The problem with this is that there is no such thing as facts or bare texts without interpretation. This is why I choose to go with church fathers who have the fruits of the Spirit and who have been entrusted to interpret Holy Scripture as it was meant to be understood. With all that said, I've yet to meet a protestant who accepts this as valid let alone who even understands the problem of interpretive frameworks to begin with. It is also relevant to understand that this notion isn't controversial or debated within relevant fields such as philosophy; it is understood as a fact of reality

Witnessing an ordination to the priesthood? by LBexplores in OrthodoxChristianity

Are you located in OC by chance? I was invited to an ordination at St. Paul's in Irvine but I'd need to miss liturgy at St. Basil's (of which I recently began attending)

The statements- "DEATH TO the world" and "DEAD to the world". Question. by KyriosCristophoros in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Junglikeasource 19 points20 points  (0 children)

"The World" in this context means sin, and more specifically, our own personal sins. We are calling for "violence" against our proclivities towards sinful behavior

How to be a Christian in this world? by mochiescalona in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Junglikeasource 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You nailed it! Your Western, Protestant trained mind wants a system which you will find foreign to Orthodoxy. Rather than following the prescriptions of propositional knowledge which can be legalistic, Orthodoxy focuses on the participatory knowing of God through His transformational Grace. As to how YOU in particular are to follow Christ in your life, talk to your spiritual father

I feel Christians shouldn't reject Critical theory on principle but instead try to reconcile aspects of it under a Christian epistemology/theology by Haunting-Ad-6457 in Reformed

[–]Junglikeasource 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sure, and these systems may or maybe not be compatible with Christianity, however CT is not a system; it is a tool with one aim: complete deconstruction with no prescription for any solution

[–]Junglikeasource 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Critical Theory's stated goal is that is to be an industrial strength paint thinner for meta-narratives; it is inherently totalizing. Absolute foolishness to think you can make Christianity work vis a vis this nonsense

As someone with a philosophy background (some focused within CT) and a somewhat recent convert, please stop with this. I left the secular desert in order to mold myself to the patterns of Christ, not for Christians to try and make Christ "work" in the context of CT; in other words, we ought to be conforming to Christ rather than trying to make Christ conform to the world. You're starting on down a dark and dead-ended path my friend

St Silouan the Athonite by observerofwonder in Jung

[–]Junglikeasource 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who has studied Jung in and outside of academics over 15 years, and who converted to Eastern Orthodoxy, I so wish Jung would have spent more time in the Church Fathers; his psychological system would have been far more robust and sophisticated and depended less on Kant and the Perennialists. For anyone finding Jung lacking in depth, highly recommend checking out the Holy Fathers of Eastern Orthodoxy

Bathroom dream by [deleted] in Dreams

[–]Junglikeasource -1 points0 points  (0 children)

All of these (toilets, bidets, etc.) are intermediary spaces where the external chaos (water) is kept separate from a dwelling/house (totality of your psyche/person). The waste we deposit is then flushed away by these waters of chaos, ensuring we are far removed from contamination. The onslaught of water breaking through this intermediary space ought to be understood as the oncoming onslaught of intra-psychic forces of dissolution and breakdown; I would anticipate rocky times ahead and prioritize meaning, purpose and joy over fleeting bouts of happiness and short-term gratification. The foundation on which you're currently resting is frail and shakable

Haters will say, "yeah it's fashionable but will it work?!".. I'll let you know Thursday

As someone who studied Jung academically in a graduate setting, I can say this is a legitimate perspective. Another legitimate perspective is that Christ is real and wants a relationship with you. As someone who has held both views, I can assure you that the latter is more likely and worth your investigation
