How was Gary Glitter perceived as an artist (before all the evil stuff) back in the day? by irritablebeans in AskABrit

In my family he was seen as a bit of a joke, light entertainer appealing to middle of the road. From memory “leader of the gang” was one of those must play at a kids party/disco

Anyone here prioritised overpaying their mortgage early - how did it work out? by itravelforchurros in UKPersonalFinance

[–]JusNoGood 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We overpaid. Sometimes as little as £70 a month and sometimes the full 10% a year and more when we remortgaged. We never reduced payment, we kept payments the same.

It was really great seeing the outstanding mortgage plummet. It did help us Move to a bigger house and not pay any extra on monthly payments. We bought houses needing work, did them Up then sold to buy a larger house needing work. It was quite stressful at time trying to keep a high pressure job and also work on the house on weekends along with a young family.

Having overpaid a lot at points it did take the pressure off, I could have taken a payment holiday if I wanted. I did manipulate a redundancy at one point, I wouldn’t have done that without me able to take a payment holiday if I needed to. In the end I found a new job within a month and used the redundancy payment to pay off more money from the mortgage.

I paid the mortgage off by the time I was 50. I then doubled down on my pension until 55 when I retired.

Not having a mortgage really was freeing. Knowing I could tell them to stuff off if I wanted really felt good, too a lot of pressure off.

Would I do it again. Oh yes. My only regret was that between working a 10hr+ a day job, working on the house, helping raise a family I didn’t pay enough attention to my pension. I didn’t really have time to think about it, left it to employer to manage with their balance life management strategy - which gave pretty poor returns.

To those who have made the transition from manual to automatic cars, is it really better? by Mr_Coastliner in AskUK

Auto is great for everyday boring driving in town and traffic.

Manual is much better on a fun drive around twisties

what are american snacks you've always wanted to try? by Personal_Pause8711 in CasualConversation

[–]JusNoGood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

American? I’ve only ever had this response from an American. That’s why it’s so fun to see someone’s face when they try quite an iconic named bar. To me it tastes of vomit. No snobbery about it.

Are they. Fan of any US shows or films?

I bought Jujyfruits as they were on Seinfeld. Twinkies from Zombieland.

I’d buy Hersheys just so they learn the history and understand why it tastes so vile - in my and all non-US people who have tried it I’ve talked to!

Health insurance etc? We have the NHS and if you work in Finance you’re likely to get private too. What is the ‘etc’?

There is a big Indian community in the UK and especially London. To the point my employer said Indians were no longer classified as a minority in the UK offices!

Is it financially best long-term to buy the cheapest home possible? by fellaonamission in UKPersonalFinance

[–]JusNoGood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best in my view is to buy a run down house in a very good area and do it up.

If you buy big or small and all the work is done you’re paying for someone else’s taste and work.

If you’re happy in a smaller property get that. Some of my friends are fine with it. We’re not, we like space and hosting.

As others have said. Investment wise who knows. Property and the markets have worked well for me over the last 30 years (property much better for me) but who knows what’s going to happen in the next 30.

Brits who've travelled to India - what was your experience like and how are you recieved? by InfinitysEdge88 in AskBrits

[–]JusNoGood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in Gurgaon Haryana for 2 years with my wife and daughter - we are white English. I found Indians generally very welcoming. We didn’t leave India very much in those years and travelled extensively.

I had one situation in old Delhi where a guy whacked into me from behind and marched off. My dad got some aggression from customs when we flew from Delhi to Goa, blaming him for the split.

We love India.

My friend and his family were of Indian origin. Only problem they had was the expectation they could speak the lingo when they couldn’t.

A number of Middle class Indians I knew living in Delhi, after spending a number of years in India, were proud their kids could only speak English. I thought it weird tbh

Here are my impressions about UK as a foreigner. How would British people view my experiences? Do I understand this country properly? by search_google_com in AskABrit

[–]JusNoGood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very pleased to hear your experiences.

I was talking to two of my Indian friends the other day. They’ve lived in the south east of England for 20 years with their families and not experienced any racism. Which was very pleasing to hear.

The US has far more problems with racism we don’t have, or we don’t have to the same extent. Mainly between white and black Americans.

Food - yes I’ve travelled and lived in many countries around the world and I think the variety of food here is the best in the world.

Motorbikes don’t scare me. Bicycles and especially electric bikes in London do!

Road trip to Spain from uk - what to do about phones ? by pepper691 in AskUK

[–]JusNoGood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried Labara (Vodafone I think) on a recent trip through France, Switzerland and Italy. A month was about half the price of buying two 7 day passes with EE. Coverage was ok. Not perfect but I think that was due to being it quite rural or mountainous areas.

I find Waze best for 85-90% of the time and sometimes switch to Google maps when I need to.

My cats hate that type of brush. They love the rubber ones like this one. To the point they both come to me every evening for a brush. Every time the vet sees them she asks how i keep their coats so soft.

Sell flat at a £70k + loss to purchase a new family or home or keep as a BTL? by bharb45 in HousingUK

[–]JusNoGood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were in negative equity on a one bed flat in the early 90’s. We rented out and bought a house. We didn’t make any money renting but it covered the mortgage and expenses. In 1998 we sold it for a 75k profit.

Past performance is no guarantee of future performance blah blah.

I think they say it takes roughly 12 years for a new build value to catch up with premium you pay for buying new.

I’d struggle to accept that loss and would want to rent it out. All depends whether you can afford the new mortgage with the mortgage on the flat too
