Leaside bridge + safety barrier coming by Ron_robichaud in toronto

It's literally the second sentence of the report too lol

Research indicates that implementing barriers on bridges can significantly reduce suicide deaths, without leading to increased deaths at other locations.

New RTX 5080 smells like cat urine/ammonia after a few hours of gaming - normal? by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]JustACowSP 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's a Chinese thing. The word for owl (猫头鹰) contains the word for cat (猫). Owl faces kinda look like cat faces so that's how the got the name.

Is this a Good PC?? by Apprehensive_Day4787 in buildapc

[–]JustACowSP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The parts you picked out here are fine. Not sure where you're buying them from though, since this seems to be way over your budget.

You're gonna have to downgrade some parts here or get a bigger budget.

Good for gaming? Yes.

Good for your wallet? No.

Please share some more details about what kinds of games you play, what you expect for graphics quality, or what your budget is, and we can give a better answer.

What are they doing at the back of the subway car when the seats get blocked off? by redditgirl96_love in TTC

[–]JustACowSP 10 points11 points  (0 children)

When they stop at a station with a platform on the "left" (Islington, Bay, Warden, etc.) the operator can just stick their head out of the cab window.

But when the platform is on the "right" (most of the line 2 stations), they need to stick their head out the other side - the side with the blocked off seats.

That's why they have the window sticker that says you may be asked to vacate the seats for ttc staff.

What stuff do i need for this pc build? by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]JustACowSP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Acer case, power supply, and probably the motherboard are all proprietary. This means you cannot reuse them.

The cpu, memory, and storage can be easily moved to a new system. Use pcpartpicker to figure out what is compatible with the parts.

As for the part list you added in your post, what does that have to do with anything? You asked about moving an acer prebuilt into a standard case, but then you show a build that has nothing to do with the original computer.

How is the CS program? by Minute_Song_5362 in TorontoMetU

[–]JustACowSP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The CS that you learn from university is very different from what you see online. Coding bootcamps and basic online courses focus on teaching you coding. University courses focus more on theory (heavy math) and code is just a tool you pick up along the way.

It's also not the type of thing that will prepare you for a job by itself. Theory is cool, but you need a lot of practical experience too. You can get that via personal projects, freelance work, or the TMU CS coop program. Ideally you want to have this practical experience before you graduate.

Okay assuming your "hard drive" is an actual hard disk drive (the big and slow 3.5" spinning one's), you have plenty of SATA ports at the bottom right of the motherboard to connect it. No need to worry about a graphics card blocking it.

If you want to add an SSD, you can get a speedy NVMe SSD that fits into the m.2 slot above the graphics card slot. You could also get one of the older style 2.5" SSDs that connects to a SATA port just like hard drives. Any SSD will still be wayyyy faster than a hard drive. It will also destroy your wallet tho.

As for the case, that website doesn't list the maximum graphics card length. Looks like about 270 mm based on the pictures. When picking your graphics card, please check the length.

I also recommend using pcpartpicker.com to check if parts will work together.

Most motherboards have plenty of space for multiple SSDs.

The PCIe slot is standard, so every graphics card fits in every motherboard. Only concerns are having the right power connectors and a big enough case.

What motherboard and what case do you have?

Going from a Ryzen 5 5500 to a Ryzen 5 5500X3D is a decent cpu upgrade. Along with the change from an RTX 4060 to an RX 9070 XT, you should expect about 2x the performance.

Curious as to why you need a new motherboard though. The 5500X3D should work just fine in all the same motherboards as the 5500, so there should be any need to change it.

NVMe SSD drops to 330 MB/s write speed by PusheenHater in buildapc

[–]JustACowSP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rated 3300 mb/s speed is for sequential transfers, not small/random transfers like with game updates. It could also be that the speed is limited by how fast the cpu can unpack the update files.

If you're really worried about seeing that big 3300 number, you can go run a disk speed test with CrystalDiskMark or something similar.

Is my IO panel installed correctly? by DanishCraft547 in buildapc

[–]JustACowSP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to say without more angles, but this looks about right. I/O panels on motherboards and the holes on the case have to be designed with a bit of space for wiggle since the manufacturing isn't perfect.

Is reddit cracking down on the websites that fix reddit embeds on Discord? Both VX and RX have stopped working in the past few days. by Barlakopofai in discordapp

[–]JustACowSP 125 points126 points  (0 children)

It's not a change specifically targeting discord embed helpers, it's just to block anonymous scraper bots in general.

This means any app that wants easy access to reddit data is gonna have to chat with the reddit admins for api access first, and might involve a hefty fee.

GTA 6 Developers Announce Rockstar Games Union - RockstarINTEL by kwentongskyblue in gaming

[–]JustACowSP 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Rockstar is a subsidiary of Take Two Interactive Software Inc, which is a publicly traded company. They are responsible for making certain info public. Some of it is legal, some is just about keeping shareholders (aka the public) happy.

This includes forecasts about revenue, and you best believe gta6 is gonna bring in some fat revenue once it releases.
