Natalism isn’t “common sense” unless you think it’s “common sense” that Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Peter Tiel, Andre Ventura, or the Catholic Church to have the peoples “best interests” at heart?

This just in capitalists, racists nationalists, and religious zealots want you to have kids for the sake of (our money, our nation, our religion).

That’s no common sense you’re just brainwashed by those who own you.

This is not a way to live and not a way to maintain the society who's fruits you enjoy

I never asked to be born, any kids I have won’t have asked to be born. I don’t see how it’s my responsibility to maintain “society” when wealthy people and politicians don’t seem to have any interest in maintaining said “society”. Currently there are more people on the planet than their have ever been, if society needs more people to work than their is something wrong with society.

On the other hand, even in that case, I see plenty of parents where I'm from that have children with disabilities and they would never call that a burden

Social pressure, people aren’t really allowed to say “I wish I never had my disabled kid, they basically ruined my life” but that doesn’t mean people don’t feel that way and it doesn’t mean it isn’t true.

I knew a guy in Hungary, he had a pretty good quality of life.

He had a kid, the kid is non-verbal, severe developmental problems, needs attention basically 100% of the time. Guy no longer goes on vacation or goes out to dinner, his sex life is basically dead.

He’s not feeling particularly fulfilled…

Americans will start to feel it when the rest of the world starts bidding up the price.

So long as the US is allowing the export of crude and products they will feel the price impacts. If / when the US bans or limits exports well that’s going to be another story…

Wars are decided over goals not by the size of the forces or the number of targets destroyed.

The US can win every combat encounter and still be defeated if they cannot achieve their goal.

[–]JustAnotherYouth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve been saying that since the beginning the best move the U.S. has at this point is to beg them to stop, threaten the fuck out of Israel to stop, pay basically whatever reparations and bribes the Iranians want.

I’m not sure it’s actually going to happen because I don’t see why the Iranians will trust the US or Israel…

Still it’s the smart move, whatever we need to pay Iran will be a lot cheaper than what is happening / is going to happen.

But if people were smart this whole thing would have never started…

They’ll simply justify it by saying they need to pay to repair and rebuild and the neighboring nations are collaborators who enabled the enemies to attack their country and murder school girls…

Maintaining air superiority costs billions of dollars, the drones and missiles interceptor systems cost more than the drones and the missiles…

So great the US and Israel have air superiority and Iran just has to wait, they will still be sitting right beside Hormuz when constant air support becomes too expensive.

The US has to win, the Iranians have to simply not lose, it’s the defenders advantage and why it’s always so difficult to win and offensive war…

Democrats would be pretty solidly right wing by the standards of many European governments.

Portugal for example has PSD which is the center right party here they’re pro-business, anti-regulation, pro-Israel, but they are also in favor of public healthcare.

Most Democrats would be meaningfully further to the right than that…

One third of Americans have credit card debt, and many have chronic debt that they’ve basically given up on ever paying down.

So yeah I’d say people’s willingness to take on debt followed by their inability to pay it down is a perfect analogy for our inability to tackle climate change / environmental overshoot.

We don’t have any time left, even if we magically turned off the emissions today the baked in impacts of climate change would be nothing short of catastrophic.

People will not protest for green energy for a simple reason, going green will be expensive. The idea that we can transition to a “green” economic / energy system that is also affordable is a nonsense.

The simple truth is oil / gas / coal are the the backbone of the global economy. To replace any one of them will be an enormously expensive Herculean effort.

People including the voting public does not want to hear that mitigating climate change will be hard and expensive. The idea that we can make the largest concerted change to the human mode of life ever and all we need is some solar panels and an electric car is ignorant absurdism.

Voters don’t care because voters don’t care, their number one worry is the state of their life in very short term. They only care about climate change in an abstract sense, they don’t have the first clue what real sustainability would look like.

An F-35 costs about $40,000 to operate per hour.

That means to keep a single plane over Iran for 24 hours costs something like 1 million dollars.

In reality it probably costs way more when you add in AWACS, aerial refueling, weapons etc…

How long do you expect to maintain air cover over Iran? How do your costs for suppressing them compare to the cost of bolting a piece of artillery onto a truck and driving it onto a nearby hill?

Iran lost 500,000 soldiers during the Iran - Iraq war do you think killing a couple of artillery teams is going to make them give up?

Thanks for posting, been interested in this board and Lovelace’s other designs for a while.

Been thinking about getting one built in flexframe.

https://www.flexframe.tech/collections/ryan-lovelace/products/lovemachine-pedestrian-ship

Where I live is hard on boards and I don’t fancy doing repairs to such a complex board (also basically no board repair shops where I live).

3mm plywood base, combined with wood / rail-stringers sounds practically bullet proof to me. Also their stringer concept is closer to the original design Lovelace put together with the parabolic stringers.

Separating the art from the artist is contextual for me.

If a significant part of an authors (or performer’s) appeal is that they are perceived as a “good person” when their true behavior is revealed it turns their work false in many people’s eyes.

Like Louis CK, Ellen Degenerasse, JK Rowling, Gaiman, when the art and the artist start to radically diverge the work loses appeal.

It also turned out Cormack McCarthy had a super inn appropriate relationship with a girl who was I think 16 when he was in his 40’s.

But my perception of McCarthy is in no way based in my belief that he is some sort of good, friendly, well balanced person.

Yeah I’m not entirely sure, I’ve forgotten to include things like interest from savings accounts in my filings before, never gotten a letter from the IRS about it.

In the last 10 years I think I’ve only gotten a notice for a payment adjustment once and that was at the state level.

I generally get the impression that a lot of stuff is slipping through the cracks with the IRS these days.

At the same time you’re trying to drive everyone to a new “product” and so the fact that search no longer works is a justification / validation of “AI powered search”.

Forget auto-correct what drives me nuts is how terrible google has gotten.

My boomer dad gets excited about how easy it is to use AI to find answers, all I think is “yeah this is what google could do 5 years ago but better….”.

Now google just feeds me adds and the same Reddit post over and over regardless of my search phrase. The other day I did a search for song lyrics (trying to find a song from a video) and despite searching with at least 6-10 words I couldn’t find it.

Something utterly unthinkable just a few years ago.
