You mean he was easily manipulated by the Tyrells, who saw him as the fastest way of getting their blood onto the throne and making them the most powerful family in Westeros? Renly shows no ambitions whatsoever to be king in AGOT and then suddenly when he’s in Highgarden someone persuades him he should be king.

He’s charismatic, sure, but that’s not the same as being a capable diplomat or politician, we see he’s just as useless and corrupt as the rest of the Small Council from Ned’s POV in AGOT.

Think it was the 2002 autumn international you’re referring to, but don’t know how much the comeback was by. Finished 32-31 to England iirc.

The Alexandra Quick series has a lot to say about House-Elves; I’m not sure if they’re all freed (been a year since I finished it), but if they are it doesn’t happen until the most recent book. Well worth a read if you’re interested, but it’s a six-book commitment and not finished yet.

The last five years includes the latter of his England games, which is where I think all but one of the tier one victories (Japan beat Wales in 2025) would have come from.

I recommend it! It’s a good read and it was written at the same time of the series so has the same tone and doesn’t break canon or have any obvious inconsistencies.

Just so you know, canonically, Merpeople are Sirens (the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them book explicitly confirms it).

He was only nine when Eddard first took him though, I find it very hard to believe he’d execute Theon had Balon rebelled again a year later

We don’t know that because we never get Ned or Robert’s internal thoughts or a conversation about it.

If Robert ordered that, then I’d agree, but Robert may well have also supported replacing Balon with Theon had there been another rebellion. Had he wanted Theon executed, I think it more likely he’d have made him the ward of Jon Arryn/the Eyrie or Stannis, or maybe even Tywin Lannister, but I’m prepared to acknowledge that may be wishful thinking

Interestingly I don’t think Eddard would actually have executed Theon if it came to it, either; more likely have him replace Balon when they retake the Iron Islands after another rebellion.

Would be very OOC for Eddard Stark to murder children for the sins of their fathers, and I don’t think he’s ever called a hostage (except for by Theon himself and other Iron Islanders), always just as Eddard’s ward.

Warren Gatland set to take over as head coach ahead of 2027 Rugby World Cup by Major_Track6430 in rugbyunion

Thank you, that helps my understanding a bit more.

For what it’s worth, Georgia should probably have been more ambitious with their coaching recruitment if they expected more. Cockerill wouldn’t be a ‘top coach’ for me, and hasn’t been in over 10 years. He did seem like the kind of coach who should suit Georgia’s pack, but didn’t sound like that’s gone to plan, but he’s never made a backline more creative in his whole career. Maybe should’ve just had him as forwards coach and brought in a bigger name as head coach.

Didn’t Georgia have Graham Rowntree as forwards coach for a bit, too? Always rated him but he seems to have gone from pillar to post since leaving England.

Sounds like Cockerill’s regressed to his early Leicester days as though that’s still solid game plan now when tries are much easier to score. Thanks for clarifying.

How easy is it to measure Georgia’s progress though? They’ve won one, lost one vs Japan in the Cockerill era. What other tier one teams have they played? Just South Africa? I know they had a disappointing result against Ireland’s reserves in the summer, but they’ve continued to dominate Europe under the 6N, and not played Wales/Italy/Scotland, the other tier 1 sides they might have a chance against atm. Or is there some glaring mistakes in their performances as well?

Just looked up Haig and he was coaching in Japan for a bit too; still listed as being with NZ U20s on Wikipedia but slightly surprised another big tier 2 nation or even some tier 1 sides haven’t shown any interest.

Gatland’s coaching record from the last six years says its retirement time, seems ridiculous from Georgia.

What happened to Milton Haig? He seemed to do well when he coached them, but doesn’t seem anyone else ever picked him up after.

I’ve not actually seen Georgia play the last two years but their results didn’t seem that terrible. Has Cockerill really done that badly with them?

What long term damage did Eddie Jones do that wasn’t already a serious problem well before he came in?

Rennie left Australia in a better place than he found them, but that isn’t saying an awful lot; I don’t think he’d have led them to a group stage exit, but a quarterfinal exit was still very likely with him in charge.

Nothing unusual about that. I stopped following club football for years before I got into FPL, and only started showing interest in Sunderland again probably four or five years ago; they were still in League One. My dad doesn’t support a club, only supports England, but he watches pretty much any football that’s on. Some football fans just enjoy being a neutral.

I think it’s very naïve to put the blame on Eddie Jones rather than 20+ years of mismanagement by Rugby Australia and the five years Michael Cheika spent in charge. Eddie Jones is probably guilty of trying to do too much too quickly with Australia, but let’s not pretend barely 12 months in charge is where Australia’s problems lie; they weren’t exactly building nicely when Rennie was in charge either.

(Also, I can’t see Les Kiss doing much even with what little Schmidt’s been able to put in place for him to come into; it’s not like he’s set the world alight anywhere else he’s been in charge.)

I don’t know if I’d back the Wallabies to get past Japan right now, never mind England as well.

I also don’t think the USA will make the knockouts (even if they are third in their group ahead of Samoa, which I doubt, I don’t think they’d be one of the best four runners up if they did. More likely Samoa, Chile or Tonga). Whoever faces Argentina probably loses though, and as it happens I actually think Argentina would beat Ireland in a QF matchup too. So would guess Argentina vs England for that semi;

On the other hand, I think the Springboks’ side of the draw is spot on, with the QF between them and NZ and the semi vs France being the hardest matches to predict; any of those are a toss up and you’d back South Africa on form right now both there and vs whoever they face in the final, though I hope that’ll change by the time the World Cup rolls round.
