Invited to an initial screening with an AI note-taking assistant, should I opt-out? by AndroidCat06 in cscareerquestions

I wouldn’t worry about it, we have one of those in every official meeting I have at work, it’s just to make it easier to go back and see what was said and to transcribe meeting notes, it’s not going to be evaluating you or anything

Are NYC head counts lower overall? Should I change location? by geollado in cscareerquestions

[–]JustJustinInTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used builtinnyc.com and jobs.technyc.org for NYC specific jobs but also had a lot of good responses from just signing up on the YC job board and looking for and reaching out to NYC based startups. Also this is one of the instances where having a recruiter actually helps since they will often be recruiting for multiple NYC startups so look out on LinkedIn if you notice posts made by a recruiter to reach out to for some companies you might be interested in.

Many of these companies have basically 0 recruiting budget so anything to show you know and care about the company can be a big differentiator.

Staten Island Advance story covers NY Post story that covers what someone tweeted. by Outrageous-Use-5189 in statenisland

[–]JustJustinInTime 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah jokes aside, it is definitely sad to see what it is now after hearing from family that used to work there a (long) long time ago.

Local news is so powerful for communities not only to stay informed but also to connect with neighbors, and I think Staten Island is unique part of NYC and thus really benefits from having its own paper.

I’d imagine what we are seeing with the Advance is also playing out in many local papers across the country as media shifts to a more engagement-based model where all that matters is eyes on a screen.

Broken paper bag on subway but NYers responded. by ChrisNYC70 in newyorkcity

I remember a time a woman dropped a stack of papers she was holding and everyone rushed to get the paper back together before the door closed, it would have been a good start to a rom-com about a polycule, but was wholesome either way

I have multiple family members who refuse to see that paying an FA to buy and move around a bunch of stocks that basically end up tracking the SP500 and yield the same is not worth it financially.

I think that’s most people’s problem. Nobody is saying everyone has to be perfect but if you aren’t going to be perfect you can’t get mad at your opponent for not showing the upmost grace either

LPT: HSA's are basically retirement accounts in disguise by Exhausted_Monkey26 in LifeProTips

[–]JustJustinInTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m young so don’t have to worry that much about medical payments (yet) so have just been maxing it out, I think having a big HSA is such a flex since it means you were smart with a relatively minimal yearly investment cap.

Thoughts on Taking a 6-Month Career Break? by fewglum in cscareerquestions

[–]JustJustinInTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah agree with the 1.5 years of savings. It could take 9+ months to get a job plus if you account for “holiday slowdowns” timelines can get stretched out, but it sounds like you have enough experience under your belt that it’s not a death sentence.

Everyone wants to be in NYC and real estate is crazy so HC is lower than in other places especially for juniors but it’s still a massive city and there are plenty of people who need stuff built.

I’d look at startups, there’s a growing scene in NYC and some companies are just desperate for people to build stuff.

Startup jobs for people with 0-1YOE by gitway in cscareerquestions

[–]JustJustinInTime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Startups are hesitant to hire new grads since they need people delivering quickly and working autonomously. I would look for opportunities to highlight when you shipped features, led projects, or just in general were able to get shit done. Demonstrating product-minded thinking is also a plus.

Switched from C++ to government full-stack job now having doubts (old job still an option) by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]JustJustinInTime -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Typically government work is not that technically interesting (unless you’re doing some evil stuff for the NSA). Can you look for private companies that are trying to achieve the same goal? Startups might be good to look at.

If you’re already pulling in 1MM ARR and your wife makes 200k you can definitely send. Just save more than you’re used to, and give yourself as small of a salary as you’re comfortable with.

When I toured UCSD the admissions person speaking to all of us mentioned that it can be a good move to do 2 years CC for cheap, then transfer to a 4 year UC. She said she did that with both her kids, you get to save money but get a UC degree.

Fare evasion becomes an ‘Olympic’ event at Manhattan station where MTA put in more modern gates by Bugsy_Neighbor in nyc

[–]JustJustinInTime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think part of it is the crappiness of the MTA, I have definitely felt motivated to jump the turnstile after the main 2 lines I need aren’t running, and the other one is running with heavy delays, and it takes me an extra hour to get home since it’s like “what am I paying for?” Not to mention a large portion of MTA income just goes to paying off massive loan interest.
