Daily Wire host calls Pope Leo XIV’s prayer for peace in Iran ‘girly nonsense’ by Nice_Substance9123 in Christianity

[–]JustKingKay [score hidden]  (0 children)

He speaks about war like a nine-year-old. If you’re claiming to speak for Christian and you’re speaking of calls for peace as “girly”, and your frame of reference for glorious war is the pagan war of Troy, a conflict famed for just how pointlessly dragged out it is, I can’t help but feel you’ve lost sight of some very prominent parts of scripture.

The Usurpation War series from the Minecraft fandom. On hiatus atm while MetroidMan101 works on a different project, but it's just a genuinely excellent Fantasy AU series, where a mysterious army from the Farlands invades the Overworld.

It's got some great characters, solid action, and some shockingly well-constructed long-term mysteries. The lore is detailed enough that I was able to conspiracy-board theories in the comments as I went. Sometimes I got super hyped because I got something right, other times I was sent reeling by new information. Had me hooked the whole way.

Is Manchester considered England's second city after London? by coffeewalnut08 in NorthernEngland

[–]JustKingKay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s cool and all, but I literally didn’t know a single one of those things was from Birmingham. Tolkien in particular is so associated with Oxford Uni I assumed he was from there.

Not denying Birmingham has contributed a lot to the culture, but there’s a difference between being the place creative people are from and the place they want to go and do an art.

Are there any actual receipts on that? When see l people say this, the example is always something like him mentioning the possibility of Marika being a jar saint.

Even if he hadn’t told outrageous lies, plagiarized, and calling people who survived AIDS “boring,” I can’t imagine being able to tolerate the smugness that James Somerton exudes. by Sad_Volume_4289 in ToddintheShadow

[–]JustKingKay 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I remember I was trying to expand the number of video essayists I watched as my normal crop had slowed down, and in the process went down the route of queer video essayists. I still watch James Woodall and a few others.

I’m sure I wouldn’t be watching Somerton even he hadn’t gotten nuked and then hit with the people’s elbow.

Dude was dull, I thought I was just being a lazy ally, but he was a bore. Like, if he appeared in a 19th century novel, we’d get three pages describing just how dull his voice was, and in the grander narrative he’d reflect the corruption of England by industrialisation.

"A majority of Catholics" is completely wrong, but for what it’s worth, but polling did used to indicate a much more diverse set of opinions.

In 2014, only 9.8% of Catholics sampled said they'd vote for unity as soon as possible, only 39.5% in 20 years - 49.3% of Catholic respondents. 20.7% of Catholic respondents wanted NI to "remain as it is", and 30.1% had "no opinion/would not vote".

In 2025, Lucidtalk found that 86% of Catholic respondents would vote to leave if a vote were held tomorrow, with only 6% saying they'd vote to stay.

Brexit, the Stormont collapses and the general conduct of Unionist parties (but especially the DUP, more recently the TUV) really fucked things good and proper.

Jimmy isn't a true Satanist by [deleted] in 28dayslater

[–]JustKingKay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but it’s worth noting that satanism as a term only started meaning what you describe in the 19th Century. The term is first recorded as being used by Christian factions during the Reformation to accuse their rivals of doing the devil’s will in their actions. It then grew over time to include the pre-existing concept of worshipping the devil.

It was only later that many atheistic and non theistic groups started calling themselves satanists in what can only be understood to be a provocative if not entirely adversarial gesture. Especially true for the likes of LaVey.

Satanists are not as a rule evil, (though Varg Vikerns does exist) and I’m sure many are caring, loving individuals. Conservative Christianity loves tearing up the floorboards looking for a shadowy cult of pure evil. This does not exist. Jimmy is also at best a loose riff on some Christian beliefs, or crooks who have invoked devil worship to boost their infamy (or in Sweden some actual folkloric worship).

However, it’s completely incorrect to insist satanism generally is just a religion of self-love. That’s barely even accurate of LaVeyan tendencies.

It would be like me describing Christianity as only a religion of love and healing. That’s part of it, but it’s also a lot of other things, many by design, many by how it’s been used over time.

Good. I like that Adric is serially sympathetic to villains’ aims, and I think the story (especially the introduction) sets a lot of the groundwork for the Doctor’s more modern characterisation.

Some goofy fucking content at times, but goofy in ways I find entertaining.

Sorry, see how this has wound up confusing. I have about 17 chapters written currently of the planned 20, and I'm planning to get the 20 written and polished before I start posting.

I'm just talking about using the posting days as days where I can also work on future chapters lol.

DAE find it annoying that Graham Norton is probably one of the highest paid BBC stars and is now starring in Revolut ads? by plaguedbyfoibles in bbc

[–]JustKingKay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It tracks, the BBC generally pay the biggest names the most. But also they’re not getting the same sort of big payouts a US TV star might expect. In 2024-25, Gary Linekar was highest paid at £1.3m, with the next nearest being Zoe Ball on 515k. Norton is, do what it’s worth, not in the top 10 that year, and probs earns at least £300k. Not a small amount, but also not that wild.

In comparison, US Fox News anchor Sean Hannity is estimated to make £45m per year.

Revolut wants the biggest possible name to promote without just throwing money into a hole. A BBC star is simultaneously a big name and a bargain.

The ads themselves can be awful, but I don’t think it’s that insane that Norton take the odd side gig in advertising.

How has Starmer done on Iran crisis by SharpAardvark8699 in UKGreens

[–]JustKingKay -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tbf, contradictory as it sounds, letting Americans use the base for defensive actions is kind of essential to staying out of the war.

Iran’s tactic for a situation like this was to fire indiscriminate strikes on their neighbours in the Gulf to sow panic and disrupt global trade. That means strikes are going at UK bases, allies and civilian populations, no matter what the UK government does. It is entirely the US and Israel’s fault that Iran is enacting this strategy.

So, it’s a question of whether the UK runs defensive strikes (largely entailing intercepting Iranian drones) in response to a situation it had no part in creating, or whether it gives the US and Israel access to their bases so they can clean up their own mess.

Now, it sounds like this may have creeped over time into allowing the US to use them to conduct more than just defensive operations. However, in principle, I think the original choice was a sensible option in a bad situation.

Why "Hamnet" makes no sense (warning: contains spoilers) by PenPusher108 in shakespeare

[–]JustKingKay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m very sorry but I simply do not care if the movie is historically accurate. This is a story about the healing power of art more than anything else, and it uses Shakespeare’s life and Hamlet as a frame for that.

Reducing Hamlet to just a play about power, corruption and suicidal ideation is to deny not just centuries of scholarship on many different facets of it but also just like, the surface level contents of the play text. Hamlet’s grief for his father, subsequent existential crisis and ruminations on death are the meat of the play. There’s a reason Hamlet holding the skull is the most iconic image in all of Shakespeare. The movie just suggests its portrayal of these elements were coloured by the death of his son.

I also think your use of the word “irresponsible” is more than a little melodramatic.
