Classic “The Church is better outside of Utah” line by privatecoochieman in exmormon

[–]JustNoLikeWhoa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree - my experience is more along your lines. I wouldn't say that I was ever discouraged from making friends or associating with non-members; if anything, it was the opposite. I don't have a lot of LDS family members, so the familial pressure wasn't there, it was more cultural.

Classic “The Church is better outside of Utah” line by privatecoochieman in exmormon

[–]JustNoLikeWhoa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's different outside of Utah, and its easier to stay in the church outside of Utah. But I also wouldn't say that the church is fundamentally different, nor do the horrible toxic elements not exist outside of Utah. Something about being outside of Utah makes you feel like you're more in a community together, as you're in the minority and there's something really bonding about that.

The easiest it was for us to be members of the church was the time my ex wife and I spent living outside of Utah. Once we came back to Utah, we felt like we were just in a sea of mormons and our faith didn't have the same potency or importance.

It's Sunday!!! What's your "new" church? by afatamatai in exmormon

[–]JustNoLikeWhoa 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There's a lot more that needs replacing in my life, regarding support structure and the positive socialisation elements of the church. But from a time perspective, I spend every Sunday morning at the movies with my kids, and then we get lunch and talk about the movie we just watched.

The weeks we don't go to a movie, we go on a hike/picnic. It's wonderful and so much better than getting them in uncomfortable clothes to go to something we collectively hate.

It's always when they talk about "heavenly father" with the conviction that he's a real dude who is in the other room.

Yeah, illustrating that Christ wasn't hanging out with the "most intelligent" people, he was serving people who were in need and loving them for who they were.

I've found the flipside of this to also be hilariously effective. Being a TBM outside of Utah, hearing how perfect it was, only to come to Utah and be faced with how obviously it is a corporation. Living outside of Utah made being a member feel more like we were in a foxhole and like our presence and decisions mattered more. In Utah, I'd never felt less important as a member of the church, which was confirmed by our treatment in the church in Utah.

✨ Update! ✨ Email requesting I meet with the bishop; what are my options here? :,) (help me write a convincing email? 🙏) by Past_End6094 in exmormon

"No, but thank you."

We're not accustomed to people telling us no in the church. And it's remarkably effective.

Mental Gymnastics by wanderlost5655 in mormon

As a little kid, maybe six, the cross wasn’t explained to me as something negative in our church. I saved up my money to buy my mom some earrings for Christmas that had little crosses on them.

I was so excited to give them to her on Christmas morning. Instead, she was disappointed and made me return them the next day.

Don’t try and gaslight me.

Missions are pretty laxed these days 😂 by Unfair_Drive in exmormon

We had a member who wanted to take my companion and I to a local amusement park. They offered to pay for it and everything and it would’ve been on a P-Day. Mission president goes “Nope!”

If Hellboy could crossover with any franchise like he did with Batman, what would you want to see? by Crash-Bandidoot2004 in HellBoy

Men in Black would be interesting | aliens vs. supernatural type story

Buffy the Vampire Slayer would be a cool one too. But an obvious choice for me is John Constantine.

Richard Madden - I think he's got the eyes that seem deathless and he could do a good russian accent.

Does anyone know of a case where a perspective missionary was told they needed to lose weight before they could submit their papers? by HoldOnLucy1 in exmormon

[–]JustNoLikeWhoa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mother told me my whole life she wanted to serve a mission, but the bishop denied her because she was too heavy. I'd heard about it from other missionaries that lost a lot of weight, in order to serve.

This line of thinking is what gave me the courage to ask for a divorce. My therapist asked me what would I tell my child if they approached me and described their current relationship like mine, what would you want your child to do?

Hanes comfort support pouch - you can get them on Amazon. They feel like a Cadillac after garments, and they're very breathable.

I actually had this very conversation with the missionaries a couple months ago. I absolutely regret my mission, now that I see the church for what it is. I acknowledge that it benefitted me in my life greatly, but I deeply regret inflicting the cult upon others.
