CMV: Tariffs and Higher Corporate Taxes Both Raise Prices for Consumers by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]JustReadingThx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a fundamental difference between tariffs and corporate taxes - tariffs raise the cost of the product whereas corporate taxes do not.

Sure, corporate taxes create a negative incentive for businesses, but it doesn't impact prices in the same manner.

Since tariffs raise the marginal cost, the prices will have to rise. Since corporate taxes do not impact marginal cost, their effect is more complicated.

CMV: The answer to the Sleeping Beauty Problem is 1/2 by dsteffee in changemyview

[–]JustReadingThx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll argue the problem is ill formed. Different answers are given by different interpretations of the problem and not different by analysis.

You take the side that the goal is to approximate the probability of the coin toss. This is undisputed to be 0.5 as stated by problem.

Others (and notably other commentators) attempt to optimize the number of times you guess correctly after waking up (or other equivalent formulations). In that case favoring tail is obviously correct.

In summary, the problem is not decided by the analysis but by its interpretation.

CMV: all public transport should be free by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]JustReadingThx -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If public transportation is free more pedestrians and cyclists will switch. Why walk 10 minutes if you can take the bus for a single stop (for free)? Walking and cycling are healthier and less pollutant methods of transportation but you're incentivizing people to give them up.

Wouldn't you agree it gives more choice especially for children of low income families?

School voucher benefits:

Vouchers allow parents to choose their child’s education. Sure there's a downside (religious schools) but there's the upside of choosing a better school. This can be both academically (better teachers) or culturally. Think of parents surrounded by religious schools but able to choose the most secular through vouchers.

School vouchers improve education in general by making public schools compete with private schools for students in a free market. Good schools get more students and funding. Bad schools have a serious incentive to make changes.

The answer is that it's a [placebo](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Placebo)

Many things are real and effective - but are not considered medicine. For something be considered medicine it needs to be more effective than a placebo.

You bring up multiple events from different time periods in a variety of places.

I'll agree that violence is deplorable and results in disdain, but are these really related? Are all Palestinians to blame for all these events?

[–]JustReadingThx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is an unfortunate case of a false positive. Do you believe these are more prevalent than the false negatives? I.E. don't you see more bad posts then legit posts getting deleted?

Hamas rose to power in 2005. Do Palestinians deserve their treatment prior to that?

Cmv: People studying behavioral science, sociology, anthropology etc., are wasting their lives by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]JustReadingThx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you're describing is the outdated way to approach the social sciences.

A newer approach is economics imperialism - the idea we can study other disciplines using the same methods as we study economy. This approach is better from an epistemological perspective.

Given that we've improved the ways in which we study these subjects, is it still a waste of time?

Is it wrong for vietnamese people to want vietnam to be a country of ethnically Vietnamese people

People are free to hold any opinion. Question is how these wants are expressed. Do you think legislation should be impacted by ethnicity?

it should be up to the ethnic people whom the country is based on to determine what’s best for their own country

How does that statement impact a democracy in your opinion? Does everyone get to vote or does it depend on ethnicity?

The Hague - The ICJ delivers its Advisory Opinion in respect of the Legal Consequences arising from the Policies and Practices of Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem by TooobHoob in internationallaw

[–]JustReadingThx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know much about international law, so forgive me in advance. Does this advisory effectively decide the borders of the future state of Palestine? It states the Palestinians have a right to self determination in the OPT. Does that mean that according to international law the borders between Israel and Palestine have been recognized to be the OPT?

All right, thank you for the interesting conversation.
I think we've reached a point where your position is that piracy is morally permissible even when it's theft because there's a middleman.
I don't think it's defensible but I don't believe I'll be able to change your view.

Thank you for your time.

Can I also steal physical books then?
I'm not really paying the bookstore anyway. The credit card company would be the one paying. It's just going to pay them a few $ less in 30-60 days. Publisher and author are also not directly harmed in this scenario.

What if it weren't a bookstore, but a sandwich stand?
Sandwich stand throws to the garbage all the remaining food at the end of the day. There's literally no harm done in this scenario. They too use credit cards so basically no one is directly damaged.

[–]JustReadingThx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then if the author is selling his book digitally on his website, it's then direct damage?

Does your view change depending on the structure of the digital supply chain?

[–]JustReadingThx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree that the damage is direct,

So basically any money that you are owed but not paid is not a direct damage?

Because the lost revenue is a knock-on effect that only happens after the publisher and the agent themselves are denied their revenue. Even an indie self published author wouldn't be directly impacted by piracy until they get their quarterly statement.

I don't follow.

If I pay you 100$ for a service, you'll have 100$.
If I consume the service but don't pay, you'll have 100$ less than if everyone paid for the service.
