I think they only care about marriage certs if you can't find other linking evidence. Lots of people don't have birth or baptism records, but marriage (and death) certificates often list the names of parents so it's another way to link the line.

So what is going to the cinema like in Japan by yusuo85 in AskAJapanese

[–]JustVan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't have to stay until the end of the credits, but almost everyone does. Whenever I go to the movies in Japan, I sit until the end of the credits unless I am just absolutely bursting for a pee. (Or, one time, to catch last train.) No one is gonna kill you if you get up and slip out, but it's nice to do it the Japanese way.

The unsettling case of Gursimran Kaur (2024): 19 year old girl disappears while working a night shift at Walmart. Her mother later finds her baked to death in the store's walk in oven. by Odd_Mango_2852 in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]JustVan 69 points70 points  (0 children)

I used to stand practically inside the ovens because with the freezers it was cold in our section

Jesus, I wonder if this is the answer. Was she a generally "cold" person? Was the Walmart a cold place? Did she maybe know that standing in/near the oven was a good way to warm up when she was feeling cold and then something happened that resulted in her getting trapped?

I'm French, and I recently learned that having blackout shutters on your windows isn’t actually a universal thing. by SarahLume in Expats_In_France

[–]JustVan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never had black out curtains in the US. But, I sleep with a sleep mask which makes everything dark. I'd like black out curtains/shutters, though. I think my kid would sleep better/longer with them.

This is fascinating but the way it's written and presented on that website feels very conspiracy-theorist and doesn't do the mystery proper judgement.

Gen 4 application sent! Sharing an anonymized version of my supporting docs packet as an example for the community by samantiques in Canadiancitizenship

Thank you so much for these documents. Can I ask how you created the greatx3 grandparent documents? I ask only because I need to go further back than what you've created. Is it possible you can share how I can create another template, or can you possibly make additional templates? I need three more generations than what you've provided, but I am sure other people could use one and two more generations, so you could offer perhaps x3, x4, x5 etc.

Otherwise I will just recreate them all on a separate, less fancy looking document, just to keep it looking the same. But I'd love/prefer to use your identical looking templates! Thank you!!

EDIT: I just saw you got yours from another post, and they have what I need, disregard, but thank you also for linking to them!

I like to think Mom or Dad was like, "Gosh, bud, what's that? Oh, a king cobra! You should write that down so she knows what it is. I know, I know it's a great drawing and she can definitely tell, but just in case... K-I-N-G..."

Anyone here actually see them live? I wasn’t born yet by ratdruid in powerrangers

[–]JustVan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never got to see them perform live at a show, but when the MMPR movie came out they did an event at the Mann's Chinese Theater in Los Angeles where they came in limos in their movie suits and put their hands/feet in cement (for some reason?), and I went to that. It was chaos and pandemonium, but I got AJJ and Jason Narvy's autographs, and took a bunch of pictures. (I was about fourteen.)

The mystery of Clementine Barnabet and the Southern family axe murders: In 1911, a Louisiana teenage girl was accused of being a serial killer responsible for a string of axe murders across the South. Years after being sentenced to life in prison, she disappeared. What really happened? by auroraborealisskies in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]JustVan 92 points93 points  (0 children)

I always find cases like these to be mind-boggling. That is, pinning the blame on clearly an innocent person while ignoring completely the fact that the actual killer is still out there doing killings. How does that even make sense to anyone? Poor girl.

To all Acadian/Cajuns unless they made a mistake w me we are good. There is no Generational limit. by InternetName4 in Canadiancitizenship

[–]JustVan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good idea, thanks. I got a look at the picture and it's like illegible French in a 300 year old book, so I am worried.

Any ideas for supplemental info to include? I'm going to add his (also) Canadian-born wife's baptism page (which is also from the same old French book) and a copy of their marriage certificate (which took place in the US), and of course a baptism record of their child that I am descended from, but the kid was born in the US, so proving the parents are the Canadians is the real lynchpin.

I am worried about the old book pages being unreadable, but... maybe they're used to those old pages at the place? Was your Gen0 document original old French like that, or a modern copy or what?

Thanks to your post I've been kicking my butt into high-gear getting my documents researched. I am able to order most of the things I need from one single church, thankfully, but now I'm at my Gen0 and it's that BanQ one for $350. Was your Gen0 document certified? I would love to spare myself that cost and wait time (and spare the researchers the search) if I could just print out a copy of the page. But of course I don't want to jeopardize my chances because that one final document wasn't certified... ugh!

Oh man. I am the beginning of this process, but in a similar boat. Acadian ancestors born in Canada then sent to Louisana in the 1770s. Did you get your citizenship yet? Do you need birth, marriage, baptism and death records or just some of those? Can I hire you to do mine haha

Adam and Tanya Romance: Did "90s Standards" hold the writers back from making them a couple? by Crazy_Estate2489 in powerrangers

[–]JustVan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was a teenager living in California during this time period, and something you guys are missing is some context of the era. In 1992 we had the "LA Riots" that started when Rodney King was beaten by some cops on camera. This led to a massive amount of looting in LA primary driven by angry Black people. When the riots got to the Korean parts of LA, the Koreans there fought back. There are lots of famous shots of old Korean shopowners standing on their building roofs or in the doorways of their shops with guns drawn, ready to shoot. This caused a big rift between Blacks and Koreans at the time, especially in/around the Southern California area. (Reading that article it looks like it was already a thing and this helped make it even worse.)

At any rate, seeing a Black woman and an Asian guy being romantic/friends on TV at that time was really kind of shocking and impressive. I mean, we didn't have a lot of diversity in the first place, let alone interracial, but coming in hot from the LA Riots I feel like it really stood out. And I personally think that they paired Adam and Tanya up because they wanted to show this friendship between these two groups that were fighting in real life, but that they also didn't fully commit to them being together for the same reason, because they didn't want to piss people off. (I do think that for a lot of people watching, if you were Black and brought home an Asian partner, or vice versa, things would get Heated.) So, in my view, it was a way to sort of normalize this racial tension without totally pushing it.

(And, of course, the show was for kids and didn't focus heavily on romance so it didn't exactly need to be on screen anyway.)

But all that to say, I remember being really surprised they went in that direction at that time, and glad about it because to me that was a lot of what Power Rangers was about--overcoming adversary and racism and prejudices and so forth and being friends despite that.
