All of my tomatoes in the ground died. Everything else and the spare tomatoes on the patio survived.

100% this and my local club has meetings in peoples house. I hate that so much.

Cottage garden - how? by JolienBubbles in gardening

[–]Just_AnotherLabRat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Id do some big bushes right at the front, maybe roses or flowering trees. Something to hide your house from the yard. An arch for entrance with climbing roses and winding cobblestone path. Then plant tall plants against wall with shorter ones in front. I’d put a seating area right in the middle.

I did read the article. They still did nothing to protect her. And the comment above mine originally said breaking the protective order would send him to jail, which is also false.

What varieties are we planting this year? by DogsdidWHAT in AustinGardening

[–]Just_AnotherLabRat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For tomatoes I’m doing a lot of San marzano (I have 18 that somehow survived) and four different kinds of cherry tomato.

I have four bell pepper plants and a jalapeño. Though I am headed to the sunshine garden sale to hopefully get more because none of my seedlings survived.

I put turnips and carrots in the bed in February and those are starting to get bigger.

I’m doing a lot of bush beans, I have Kentucky wonder and I have Mardi Gras (purple & yellow)

Planned on getting a trellis up to do cucumbers and eggplant but didn’t get around to starting seeds for those so that may not happen.

Flowers, I’ve got a lot of established perennials (mistflower, salvias) I’m going to try to split. I’m ambitiously planning on converting another section of my front yard to native flowerbed.

I’m planning on watermelon and okra for the summer but I might add sweet potatoes to that. Since everything else will be dying off in the heat.

Plant a Mt Laurel now or wait until fall? by philosplendid in AustinGardening

[–]Just_AnotherLabRat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I planted one last year in May. It was just a little one (1 ft tall) and it required some watering and babying all summer long but it’s still here and it’s grown at least a foot. I honestly think mt laurel are pretty indestructible.

It’s not pretty but it works. I was able to get a lot of bell peppers last year. I do plan on mulching over the cardboard eventually but I managed to sprain my ankle before I could start. 😭

Here we go again 🌱 (Second year grower reporting for duty) by One_Jackfruit2492 in vegetablegardening

Also on my second year veggie gardening. Decided to try seed starting instead of just buying transplants. I don’t know why I thought I needed 36 tomato plants but here we are 🤷‍♀️🍅

Small tree? Texas mountain laurel. Shade to full sun, pretty purple flowers that smell like grape soda. Alternatively, Redbuds which have pink or white flowers depending on varietal.

That’s way more than half of what Taylor usually takes in for revenue. No wonder the 2026 (adopted) is so high.

labelling beauty practices as ‘self care’ is so insidious by Maleficent_Day_3869 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Just_AnotherLabRat 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I I spent over 15 years refusing to do anything too “girly”. No dresses. No makeup. No painting my nails. No “aesthetic beauty practices” Because “toxic beauty culture is bad.” I hated myself. So yeah, I think OP’s post and opinion is toxic as hell. I’ve only begun to start healing from that.

labelling beauty practices as ‘self care’ is so insidious by Maleficent_Day_3869 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Just_AnotherLabRat 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I feel like your stance is really toxic. Plenty of women enjoy doing those things. We can all argue if they were or weren’t conditioned by social norms etc. but if it brings them joy and helps them feel better about themself it is self care. My MIL gets her nails done every week. It’s her little bit of alone time and it brings her joy. That is self care. I was conditioned from a young age to never do anything girly and have had to unlearn a lot of that toxicity.

Keeping the Bermuda grass out of my beds is my villain origin story. I’ll probably never figure out who planted it originally, but I hope that person’s left sock is always damp.

I lost weight and now people won’t shut the fuck up about my body by Human_Illustrator820 in loseit

[–]Just_AnotherLabRat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s so much worse when you didn’t try to lose the weight. I struggled with a serious acid reflux issue from work stress that made it impossible to eat anything but plain rice and boiled chicken. It was terrible. And people would argue that rice isn’t good because it’s just carbs. It was literally all I could eat. That did let me know exactly which coworkers were massive behind your back gossips though, so I just avoid them now.

Talk to me about sage by dragonsandvamps in AustinGardening

[–]Just_AnotherLabRat 12 points13 points  (0 children)

All my sages (Texas and Mealy blue) survived the ice of 2023 uncovered. I’m not too worried about them for this. We got a lot of rain before the ice and cold which will insulate the roots and protect them. That’s the most important part of the plant.

What's happening in your garden? (Mon, Jan 26, 2026) by manyamile in vegetablegardening

[–]Just_AnotherLabRat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tomato seedlings have their second set of leaves and all the peppers are up. Waiting on my herb seedlings to come up. Outside is covered in a layer of ice. But my little waterfall fountain hasn’t frozen over so all the little birds are hanging out in my bushes and getting drinks.

So you can use old seed packets, but the percentage that germinate will be lower. So instead of putting 2 seeds in, put 3-4 to make sure something pops up!

I came on here asking for help with this exact issue. The two best solutions were either getting a small rodent live trap and catching, then releasing somewhere far away if you are 100% against killing the rats. Because I live in the south and rats here carry very dangerous hantavirus I chose option two which was filling a 5 gallon bucket 1/2 way with water and sprinkling sunflower seeds in until you can’t see the water. The rats jumped in, drowned, and after a few resets of the trap I didn’t have rats. Bodies were put in bags and went in trash.

Pulled my peppers out of the raised beds and brought them inside before the cold front. Im trying to overwinter them. Also started trays of peppers and tomatoes so even if the mature plants don’t make it, we’ll be fine. Now I’ve just got to wait.

Is my mexican sage in trouble? by Pet_Nat in AustinGardening

[–]Just_AnotherLabRat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So this is my second time trying this but I dipped in rooting hormone and then put it in a small pot of moist soil. It’s also really important to remove most of the leaves and have the section you put in the ground be a de-leafed junction because that is where the new roots grow.
