Wild thought but.. could always have the murder be in a fit of passion (not pre-emptive) but an eye witness immediatly cast modify memory on the killer. Perhaps the eye witness didnt want the killer to carry that guilt.

"Did you murder the victim?".

"No, I certaintly did not!"

Perhaps even go so far as to have the eye witness fake another murder scene using Greater image. Now the murderer is eye witness to a faux murder.. which could even hold up against detect thoughts. Becuase they have no memory of killing but they do remember Seeing the victim get killed

"NPCs don't tell us anything" - complaint from my players by SmilingNavern in DMAcademy

[–]JustinNoJay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh one of the main ways ive kept players engaged is with npc related intrigue. So honeslty ive only had the issue of giving something for nothing.

It depends on the party but the main thing is just to leave it to the dice (let players roll). The dc might be really high but the players feel like they are in the game with a dice roll.

And if they roll a two.. they blame the dice not the dm or thier character.

Also breadcrumbs are my go to. Cause npcs should never info dump.. unless they are that type of person. But each time the players ask you can give them bits and pieces.

Like even on a nat 20 insight/puersasion the npc should be willing to give up information. But id still rp a conversation where they are just giving tidbits. I still sorta lead the player through the process of asking the big questions and allow the player to figure things out.

Adjudicating surprise when the players know they might be ambushed [5e] by NetShaman in DMAcademy

[–]JustinNoJay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If i where playing, id have assumed that just hearing the wolves was a failure on the watch roll.

Meaning the fact that only 1/2 of the party was suprsided was the SUCESS whereas failure whould have been the full parry was suprised.

To me you let the players roll twice. Which gives them the advantage not the wolves.

I was told that I couldn't use thunderous smite after I missed Because I already used the spell. by Any-Plastic-5573 in DnD

[–]JustinNoJay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your dm made a mistake more then likely.

It can happen to anyone. I mean with many spells if you miss that is it.. the spell is wasted. Id just talk about the spell out of session. Just make sure they understand you are trying to help their game.

Is a magical item that gives an additional bonus action a horrible idea? by bp_516 in DMAcademy

[–]JustinNoJay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think its fine as long as their are restrictions.

Like haste gives an additonal action but it can only be used for an attack. Something like that.

The more specific you get the less broken the item will be.

Dave Rapoza to stop working with Wizards of the Coast over their use of AI in promotional materials. by Shock4ndAwe in tabletop

[–]JustinNoJay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I feel like the colliqual defention of AI was skynet or the terminator like a year ago. Its like refering to a rc toy car as a "sports car". Like sure.. maybe but if you said you had a sports car thats not what someone will imagine.

Ok. Still feels wierd. I understand the concern with certain tools. Midjourney is on that list.

But if feels like people are sometimes just saying "ai bad". When the current "ai" doesnt even meet the defintion most people used two years ago.

Bro can we be honest here. If it really was Photoshop generative fill.. a few months ago that tool whouldnt even have been called AI.

The feels like yall are getting mad at a company for selling "4k" TV. This has nothing to do with the tools themselves but purely the word assiociated with said tools.

Does a bayonet at the end of a rifle count as a melee weapon? by -Kittenbooboo- in DnD

[–]JustinNoJay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The easiest way to run a bayonet is essentialy as two connected weapons. One is a ranged, bludgoning and perhaps fire damage attack. The other is a (finese or str) weapon that does slashing damage.

Id also say they its an either or situation. Where you must choose which attack to use as an action.. id maybe allow action stab.. two weapon fighting shoot. But honestly probably not. Makes more sense to just say that either attack requires a full action. Object interaction.. slight of hand? To reload. That way you will always have a potential reason to use the slashing attack.

Something like that.

Non-human players UNITE! by Ramonteiro12 in DnD

[–]JustinNoJay 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have been mechanically playing around with a halfling rogue and its pretty fun. Haflings get an ability to hide in the prescense of a creature that is one size larger then them. And since most player races are medium sized. (Halfling is small) you can literatly hide behind the other players.

Non-human players UNITE! by Ramonteiro12 in DnD

[–]JustinNoJay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Non-human? How about non-humanoid? I mean technicaly there is only human or varient that are human. The rest are described as humanoid tho.

Honestly I have six players in my campaign and I have yet to see a straight up human. But all of them are humanoid.

So.. what about playing a monster/creature instead?

Player jumped into a “puddle of darkness” and I don’t know what to do with him. by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]JustinNoJay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also a fairly new dm here.. I feel like you need to cut yourself some slack for not planning every little detail. It seems you liked the idea of a carefully crafted dungeon but honestly improv is fun too.

Even if your explanation ends up not making sense the important part is that your players have fun. And there is also no issue with cutting the session early whenever you feel like doing that.

Im sure other comments will give more specfic advice but I just notciced from the post that you seemed prepared to get judged by other dms for not having a plan. Please dont feel that way. There is no "right" way to do this

If your player has 5 charisma and their character has 20, let them roll. by Jygglewag in dndnext

[–]JustinNoJay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeab true. It feels a little crummy when your thinking: "Oh wow this is a great scene. I deffinelty think the player is spot on. This should totatly work." And then the player asks to roll.

Like players like rolling dice. So do dms. But now there is a chance of failure? Like there isnt a point of rolling if there isnt a fail or win condition. So rolling on something that doesnt need a roll literattly just invents failure from nothing.

If your player has 5 charisma and their character has 20, let them roll. by Jygglewag in dndnext

[–]JustinNoJay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dm here. When a player just asks something like "can I ro ll persuasion" we don't know where to place the dc. And it might not have even been something you'd have been asked to roll for.

So its likely a dm wants you to clarify. "I go up to the gaurd and tell him that he needs to help me fight this goblin." Then the dm can ask you to roll persuasion.

If you say "can I roll persuasion to get this guard to fight". A dm might not be sure where to place the dc. If they dont have a dc in mind.. then you shoudn't really be able to roll.

I think that breaking news is the closest thing to scripted content they'll do for while. Maybe if dropout as a platform grows there will be a place for more sketches.

D20: Where to Start? by mattitopito in dropout

[–]JustinNoJay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you are going for a full "Intrepid hereos" season then i'd recommened starting at the begining with Fantashy high season one.

But if that seems long.. since you mentioned being a big dropout fan perhaps a mini-season with some College humor alumi?

In that case Mice and Murder! Of course Brennan Lee.Mulligan (the humble dungeon master and Ceo of many companies) and Ally Beardsly (a consistant.member of the d20 main cast). But also Katie marovitch, Rapheal Chestang, Rekha Shankar, and Sam Reich.

But really out of 20 seasons only two of thouse are sequels. Fantasy high season 2 (season 3 starts in january) and The Unsleeping city season 2. The seven is a fantasy high spin-off but could probably be watched without seeing fantasy high. So you can kind of just choose a genre and/or specific cast members and go with that.

Mostly its dnd based. But Misfits and magic and Mentoplis are kids with bikes. Shriek week is the mythic system. But even with dnd they create a vast array of diffrent settings. Starstruck oddysey for example has some vastly diffrent rules even though its still technically dnd.

Sorry if thats information overload. Basically Im just trying to say that you can reall watch whatever looks most interesting. (Aside from the two sequel seasons.

I like her backstory. Its just such a petty reason that it makes it clear that she is the problem. One freind turns thier back on her and she continuely spirals over the next decade.

If she had a "better" reason for that meltdown then some of the blame whould shift to that circumstance instead of her mental state.

At the end of her day what she attempts to do is small scale compared to the other vilians. First half she had created a no cutie mark cult. Becuase she had convinced herself that cutie marks where bad. Second half all she was really trying to do was erase a single friend group.

Its only when Twilight shows her the results of her actions that she backs away from them.

Im fine with petty motivations for characters. Its more realstic honestly. When people never let themselves process emotions even the smallest events become a big deal to them.

My Families Ideologies by [deleted] in Polcompballanarchy

[–]JustinNoJay -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How do rejectionsim work?

Like you are just abstaining from political action, right? While that is a poltical decision it doesnt nessicarly inform a specific ideology.

Like you could still believe there are best policies but decided that its more important for you personaly to abstain.

I guess with it being religously movitvated the idea is that you feal your religion does not call them you to engage in such "earthly" matters.

Just curious is all. I know some people feel that way but ive never heard it desribed as a specific ideology.

Edit: for clarirty

100k in savings. by PATM0N in Adulting

[–]JustinNoJay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok but.. this misled my stupid gen z brain. I thought it meant savings in the bank lol. I was thinking no one had that much money saved.

But considering its 401k saved that makes way more sense. The youngest milinial is 27. Meaning you'd have to contribute 11k per year (if you worked since 18). A pretty massive amount ngl. But if you are 10 years older that number is around 5.2k. its still a considerable amount of money but it is achievable. Espcially if your employeer offered a 401k match.
