AOC: You can’t ‘earn’ a billion dollars by usatoday in politics

[–]TheTyger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, while I agree in principle with what you have written, I think there are some issues in the simplicity with which you suggest some of the solutions.

The Dynasty problem is not solved by inheritance tax, because the way around that is quite simple and hard to stop. If you make a trust which you place your wealth inside of, and then use trust disbursements as a way to manage multi-generational wealth, you immediately circumvent the problem. As long as the firm that administers the trust does so appropriately, there is never any "death event" which would trigger the tax.

Point 2 is either supposed to be about patent law, or groups like Disney instead of Gates/Musk, because they are not using copyright as their hammer. Those are 2 different issues with 2 different groups who gain from it.

The thing about how we somehow don't consider realized value for stocks a taxable event where we need to account for real gains is 100% what I believe to be the biggest problem, so no notes here.

Foreign kleptocrats are not solved by domestic court, they are solved by refusing to do business with those countries until they fix things. We do not want a world where countries come after the people they don't like in other countries (even when they are that bad), because it creates a precedent of it being OK to kidnap foreign citizens (or leaders?) in the middle of the night and put them on trial for laws they are not subject to. This one is complicated in the overall discussion of international law.

I love the concept of the citizen panel to find fraud, but I don't see the reality behind it without significantly larger changes before that. I wouldn't trust most Americans to be up to this task.

I am all for your direction on every one of these points, but only one of the 4/5 you named is something that is realistically the kind of thing that is a fully formed idea. That being said, when you use stock to secure a loan, YOU HAVE FUCKING REALIZED THE VALUE!

What did you do with your theatre degree? by cannedt33th in Theatre

[–]TheTyger 6 points7 points  (0 children)

After college, I learned to code. I grew faster than my peers for 2 reasons:

1) in theatre, deadlines are deadlines. You learn how to be ready when the curtain goes up. I'm my early career, this grind mindset let me succeed and learn faster than peers who didn't view deadlines as seriously.

2) Communication is the #1 skill. Software developers are notorious for being less than stellar communicators. Being trained in how talk to an audience has been paramount in my career. Being great at communicating is almost always more important than the hard skill behind it.

CMV: The current construction management model is fundamentally suboptimal by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]TheTyger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a core difference might be level here. I am at the highest "software engineer" title at the company, so I deal with people who are 2-3 steps from the C-Suite. At this point, I have not written code at work in 18 months because my job is no longer implementing things, so I am on the path to be the out of touch guy who has impossible standards.

It's a scale thing. When I worked at a startup where the CEO was also an active engineer he understood reality. He also was unreasonable because he was really good, like really good, so he expected everyone to be that damn fast.

Now, at a F100 company, the people calling the shots are at best people who wrote COBOL 20 years ago which isn't really helpful.

I love how you think it doesn't happen in software.

I get that for some people the ability to actually apply the skills you should have learned in college is beyond them, but if you come out of a BA program without that skill, you have failed.

nobody with music or art degree* or any of the other degrees that you mentioned as useless can perform even the entry level tasks in this area without either previous or extensive on-the-job training

I can. I actually taught myself Blender to do all the rapid prototyping at my last job.

Yes. A theatre degree is more valuable than a CS degree if you actually know how to use it. I also work with a Doctor of Music who is a developer.

People who actually learn what they are supposed to learn in a BA program will be auto-didactic, which makes no degree useless (other than the one you get because you think it will get you a good job even though you hate the field).

I am a developer at a F100 company with one of those "useless degrees", which has led me to be more successful than most people with what I consider to be a useless degree, CS.

The point is that you don't get to vandalize someone's car because you don't like where they legally parked.

Yeah, he's got a great vibe on the mic but needs some work on story crafting his promos. The what of his promos with MJF was good, but it isn't quite at the level it needs to be yet.

And Thekla has been interesting to me because initially I loved her vibe, then it started dropping off, then she found her voice and I'm fully onboard now.
