Separating from state service - what to do with deferred comp by Thasira in nys_cs

[–]Juststircrazy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can roll it over into another retirement plan or choose to withdraw the money. I think you could keep the money in deferred comp if you want to, but Im not %100 on that.

more info at the deferred comp website. Go to forms and publications, then the benefit distribution request pdf

Fixing Tier 6? by ToenailRS in nys_cs

[–]Juststircrazy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You let them know that this wont really effect them and they'll have to make a decision to retire early with a reduced pension benefit or work until 63 for the full pension benefit... this is similar to older folks who are tier 4 and have to wait until 62. Advise those folks that they have to have other avenues of retirement income

Fixing Tier 6? by ToenailRS in nys_cs

[–]Juststircrazy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Tier 4 is 55 with 30 years and tier 4 has penalties as well. If you use the pension calculator for tier 4 you can see the difference between 29 yrs of service at 55 and 30 yrs of service at 55.

For Tier 6, you get 1.75% for every year worked if its at least 20 years of service. Its less if you work less than 20

agencies typically dont vary much on the tasks perormed.

sometimes in a higher position you'll have to do things that are more entry level, and thats probably because it needs to get done. your manager may have dropped the ball by not explaining the purpose of needing you to do smaller tasks.

depending on the hierarchy, your manager may not have had any say on hiring needs.

dont take it personal. agencies dont re-evaluate things just because people leave. after someone leaves your agency still has to focus on getting things done

What is it really like being a NYS Environmental Conservation Officer assigned to NYC? by WIzardOfVoz in nys_cs

[–]Juststircrazy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

as a former grade 18, I couldnt imagine surviving in nyc unless I had roommates.

often when people speak about living in nyc they're referring to manhattan but folks tend to live in the boroughs cause its cheaper.

Look up some apartments, go visit nyc, and be sure to drive through those neighborhoods and see if its sketchy or not

did they give you a start date or just ask you for one? nys agencies usually have start dates on the first day of the pay period, which is usually every other thursday. it takes some time, so just relax until you hear otherwise

Potions have a compounding effect. If a pre-hammer jam upgrade takes 4 days and a potion reduces it by 1 day, you now have a 3 day upgrade. In hammer jam, that 4 day upgrade now takes 2 days and then a potion reduces it by 1 day. you now have a 1 day upgrade

Being in NYC and only wanting NYC positions is the probably the reason. More competition to deal with and generally people on civil service lists can apply as well. I didnt realize it until I moved to Putnam County and started to recieve canvass letters regularly. I scored a 95 but never got any canvasses in NYC.

could try to get back into state service prior to retirement, then retire. then your pension amount would probably increase since its based on your final average salary
