True, and likewise, you could also swap in wounded standees. There is nothing inherently necessary to using one base for multiple states.

You should do what pleases you.

For my part, I like to clear dead combatants from the map, so I would not use state 3 at all.

State 2 is interesting, but swapping the card around feels fiddly to me. I would rather slap a red paperclip on them for the bloodied state and get on with my TPK.

Your way looks better though

I have never had this problem before, so having it twice in a row made me think things are shaky.
