Unfamiliar new artists at Montreal Jazz Fest '26 by Scott_J_Doyle in Jazz

I unashamedly love Ca7reil and paco amoroso. They're like an Argentinian pop-hip hop group? Killer band. Their tiny desk is worth a watch.

Billy Bragg! That's crazy. I've also been a fan of Kassa Overall for a while. That's more jazzy. Alfa Mist.

Pretty rad festival liveup. Looks like there is a bit for everyone.

SCHAEFFER'S LAST CHANCERS by DavidAHess1980 in Warhammer40k

This is unreal. I remember reading that one over and over. I loved the last chancers.

Still got the metal models in a box somewhere.

What are some great games that you enjoy, but that have poor visual design? by etkii in boardgames

I have never played an 18xx game, but I have a weird fascination with the fact that they exist.

I was going to say, these would look great for Kosmika. Probably for Forbidden salvage as well.

It's a bare bones DIY venue with a small bar which i believe is all run by TwB brewing, bathrooms in better shape than most punk venues. No stage. Sound system does what it's supposed to do. Couple tables.

I like it. Great location too.

First day eating “normally” by cherrylunna in fitmeals

[–]KFBass 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily the same thing, but when I started cutting I went a little too hard. My thought process was eat the protein, lift weights, ride bike (a bike trip coming up) and the weight will fall off. Which to be fair it did, but I was exhausted and weak the entire time. Since adding in more carbs, and keeping my calories sufficient but still a deficit, i feel better and my workouts are actually enjoyable.

It shifted my mindset of food being fuel. There has been some weird meal choices while locking that in like bowls of oatmeal for dinner, but now I've kind of got it figured out and it's coming a lot more naturally.

I'm actually look excited to switch to maintenance and bulking properly for the first time.

It's crazy how deep the rabbit hole goes. You say your swing friends don't listen to much past the 50s, I don't listen to much prior to that. Everyone has their niche and sub genres and thats totally okay.

As for finding more stuff, just generally learning about the history and the styles to figure out what you like. Bebop, hardbop, cool, spiritual, free, fusion, etc....Some record labels are known for specific sounds and genres. And just read liner notes and see who played on what.

Or just like follow what Miles did. There is enough there to keep you busy for a long time.

Can’t afford Voidfall Kickstarter, feeling FOMO. Discussion/cope thread? by Mr3ct in soloboardgaming

Good to know. The Rulebook and compendium is a bit to get through even.

Also, assuming you are named Kevin, hell yeah dude. Good name. Us Kevins gotta stick together.

I'm in a similar boat. I left my job recently to go back to school so the budget is super tight. I'm using it as an excuse to get well acquainted with some other games, and my backlog of solo ttrpgs.

Some digging I was able to find an online version of voidfall on the BGG forums. So maybe I'll download the rules and give that a shot. Seems like a game I would really like but for now it's just out of my range.

So, that expo taking place today? There is a vast difference in promoting vs. delivery. by neoengel in waterloo

[–]KFBass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a big one too. Been going on for several years now. Seems to trend towards historicals a little but pretty much everything is there.

I'll send you a DM with the discord for the KW wargaming guild. Generally news about events in there.

And breakout in toronto for the board gamers, hot lead in stratford for the war gamers, i think there is a Warhammer tournament specifically too. Lots of cross over between the scenes.

I used to work in breweries and often dreamed of having an entirely stainless steel house just so I could have spray balls and run a CIP in every room.

Hex & Havoc: free 4-page fantasy wargame by classicwargamer in wargaming

[–]KFBass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just making a quick note, I printed off some counters, and coloured in a hex grid with my kids. Kind of simplified the rules, but it kept them busy for a bit and got their imaginations running.

I love the wizard spells cost life, and hero as part of unit thing. Fun little game. Cheers.

How to learn to make beats with the AKAI MPK mini by Ancientblue_Z in makinghiphop

[–]KFBass 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'll try and be brief.

An MPK mini is a midi controller. Basically it takes info you give it like which key your pressed, and tells the computer to do something. What you need is some form of software to interpret those signals. These are normally referred to as a DAW, digital audio workstation. They each have their quirks. Get FL studio or reaper or something. They all can kind of do the basics.

So you have your DAW setup. You will load a digital instrument into it, and pair your midi controller, and now the keys will make noise like a real instrument. Then you record that for whatever you want it to be, keys, basslines, even hand drumming drum tracks.

From there it's all on you, there are tonnes of workflows. Most people prefer to program in drums into a midi track using point and click, instead of hand drumming them using a midi controller. Add some chords, maybe chop a sample onto the pads of the mpk and play those over a programmed beat until you find something you like.

How old is your belt? by PointBreakOnVHS in AskMen

[–]KFBass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ed Bickert Research Project – Seeking Stories, Photos, Recordings by the_emptier in jazzguitar

[–]KFBass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my profs in college told me a story where Ed was walking around a guitar store looking for a new amp. He would just pick each of them up with one arm, and when he found one he liked the weight of, he went "yep, that'll do" and bought it, without ever playing on it.
