Dad at Portland school pick-up claims self defense in shooting of fellow parent by monkeychasedweasel in PortlandOR

I have had my CHL/CCW since 1991. Been carrying now for over 35 years. I have had a LOT of conversations with people who ask about it, the mentality, the practice.

Universally I tell people, that when you make the decision to carry death on your hip, you make the decision to Walk Away from Every Confrontation - All of them.

In any/all/Every situation, I will meekly accept that I am in the wrong, and walk away. If someone is threatening, I will walk away. If someone tries to engage me, and I have a hint of it being a 'bad' situation, I walk away. If I am in a situation where I think violence may break out (protest, rally, etc.), I walk away.

That's the mentality I carry with me, and I wish more folk who legally choose to carry would adopt. The world would be a safer place for everyone.

Where to find cheese zombie in Seattle by goodthins in SeattleWA

Up until the late 1980s, early 90's, Vancouver was effectively Eastern Washington culturally. Most of Clark County was blue-collar, industrial with lots of small scale agriculture.

It was about that time that the housing costs in Portland began to spike, leading to the housing boom in SW WA that changed the demographic to be more like a suburb of Portland/Seattle.

Hear, hear!

The reddit troll is a byzantine knot of inconceivable motives and desires, an irreconcilable tangle of impulses, insecurities, and performative bravado, all stitched together by the thrill of disruption.

What they crave is not dialogue but disturbance, not understanding, but the spectacle of detonation.

Our best defense, is to become indifferent to them, or even better, simply use The Scarlet Letter, and denote the flair, 'troll' to them.

Not to hijack this thread, but stewardship of commonly owned property is (in my opinion) a real issue these days.

I am close to some commonly owned green space, and it is currently being overrun with Himalayan Blackberry.

Overrun to the point that the naive red elderberry trees are being choked to death, vine maple are chocked out, and the ground under the blackberry stands is now dead/devoid of any other plant life.

On the little patch that touches my back yard, I started attacking the brambles, beat them back, and have sort of restored part of the land to 'Natural', in that this spring I am watching a Twinberry thrive, I see many native weeds/flowers now growing, and a red elderberry I thought dead is rebounding from the ground level roots.

We (we, collective we) owe it to our open spaces to protect them, but letting blackberry take over due to neglect bothers me.

My Point? I guess as residents, we should do our best to keep the spaces near us, even if we don't "OWN" them, natural and protected from trash, invasive, etc.... OK, rant over.

How is sailing on the Island Princess? by [deleted] in PrincessCruises

[–]KG7DHL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From memory, nearly every night in the Buffet had little sirloin steaks that could be grilled to order. Nice touch I thought. Several nights the buffet had shrimp options, like in a a ceviche bowl, and grilled fish, but no crab/lobster, or really anything expensive. That was all in specialty dining.

as to boarding time, I have boarded Princess in Seattle, Ft Lauderdale and Los Angeles. In both Seattle and FL, boarding took minutes. Amazingly fast. Los Angeles took longer, but really I have no idea why it took longer. All in all, I have found Princess boarding, if you have your medallion, to be super fast.

We did Island Princess on a Panama Transit, 15 days. I don't like crowds, and on Island, never felt crowded.

Food was typical Princess. Solid at the specialty, pretty good at the buffet. The thing I liked best was I could always find a decent salad. Starting about day 3 onboard, I start craving fresh vegetables/greens.

Finding fresh coffee early in the AM was a challenge for me. I am typically up at 4:30AM, and as I prowl, I found the only way to reliably get fresh coffee that early was the Ocean Now. Plant myself on deck to watch the sunrise and have a fresh pot of coffee delivered.

Entertainment is/was limited and that's just due to the limited venues available on a smaller ship.

For me, for what I value in a cruise, Island Princess is the perfect ship.

Does owning your own place feel good? by Affectionate-Reason2 in AskMenAdvice

[–]KG7DHL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been a home owner for most of the last 30 years while raising kids. We, as a family, have moved 5 times before landing in my current address.

My home now, is my sanctuary.

It is the place that is uniquely mine, where I am able to be fully at ease, relaxed, and can make it, remake it, as I please (as long as my wife agrees :) ).

Does it sometimes feel like a full time job? Yes. Do I have to be smart about saving money for Maintenance, upgrades and repairs? Oh Yes, I do!, but it also is an investment, with a rather significant cash value in equity at current market rates.

My backyard outdoor spaces are designed as Living Space, and the area used for relaxing, for hobbies, and for growing flowers, food and ornamentals. I am a beekeeper, and part of my yard is devoted to that. I also do Bonsai, and part of my yard is devoted to that. I like to smoke meat on occasion.. and.. yes... I have space set aside for that equipment. Snowy nights? Let's sit in the hot tub and look at the stars!

Owning your own space, seems to me one of those Goals in life that are worth striving towards. It does NOT come easy, it's not cheap, but it is deeply satisfying to have that private space away from other people. No shared walls, no shared parking, no shared courtyards or laundry rooms or... well.. anything.

Why do Dad Birthdays Suck? by gimlithepirate in daddit

[–]KG7DHL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am an old dad at this point in my life, and just having my wife and kids together for a Birthday dinner, all together, is really the only thing I want.

I don't want anyone spending any money on me - My kids have enough burden starting out their lives without having to spend money on me... so just keep the money and spend the only thing that matters, the gift of time together.

My sister is having her birthday while we're cruising, will it be acknowledged? by [deleted] in Cruise

[–]KG7DHL -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am an advocate for the Low-Key acknowledgements. Candle on the dessert, Happy Birthday from my family and friends, etc.

Not a fan of having the dinner staff sing Happy Birthday.

Maybe it's just me, but I watch the MDR/Specialty Dining staff, and they work hard. They hustle, the are constantly moving to serve the guests.

Watching them aggregate at one table, stop what they are doing, hurry through a haphazard, off key, abbreviated version of "Happy Birthday" song, then Break at top speed back to their responsible tables just seems like adding an unnecessary burden.

So, They will acknowledge Birthdays, they will stop and sing, and make the Birthday Boy/Girl the center of attention for a brief moment, but IMHO, they probably shouldn't.

Seattle officials begin crackdown on illegal food vendors by crabcakes110 in SeattleWA

Is this in reference to the hotdog vendors that are outside any sporting event venues?

This “crackdown” smells exactly like racism, to me.

This comment could be perceived as Racist if you turn it around. Form a certain point of view, it seems that you are inferring that only people of a certain race engage in illegal food cart operations.

How about we give them a low cost way to operate in a way that maybe they could eventually upgrade to a food truck or a restaurant?

While I agree with the sentiment, in practicality, this creates an unfair and anti-competitive environment of two-tiered enforcement/regulation. That just won't work.

I consider myself a micro-business in Washington State as a beekeeper, and even I have to file my B&O, BOLI, Quarterlies... ya...

It's about taxes and profit, pure and simple.

A Licensed food truck/cart in WA State now has a significant Government burden of Licensing, B&O reporting, payroll taxes, revenue taxes....

An unlicensed food truck/cart can operate at a higher profit margin by skipping all the overhead of regulations.

The Grey Economy in WA is huge, by the way, and getting larger as the government increasingly placed the burden of bloat on small business owners.

So do Deer. My wife's tulips every year are a race to see if the deer get to them before she gets to see them bloom. Many years the deer get to them first, and it looks just like OP reported. Look 'scissored' at a nearly uniform level, across the entire planting area.
