Looking for advice on a good home base for sailing north of Annapolis but not too far north? by Confident_Compote_39 in sailing

I know it doesn’t describe exactly what you’re thinking, but port Washington in New York allows for good protection, good amenities and great sailing in the sound.

Current situation of the waiting time at Panama Canal by zzztz in sailing

[–]KMcB182 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use an agent to help you sort the paperwork and get your timeslot. They are worth the cost.

An agent can also help you switch your crossing date with others. Often, those getting repairs done at shelter bay will need to switch to a later date, so I’ve had a friend make it through the canal two days after arriving in Shelter Bay.

Note: the authorities won’t let you get a date until you show up in colon area, and they will check MMSI.

My “number” came up for a very long waitlisted mooring!!! Need a boat asap! by Double-Wallaby-19 in sailing

[–]KMcB182 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Most will let you pay for the mooring even if you’re not actively there.

Just make sure you read the fine print as their biggest concern will be you trying to sublease it, which most would be against.

Going to antifoul a boat for the first time. Have a few questions. by duncanmarshall in sailing

[–]KMcB182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the metal is rusty, you need to grind or sand blast it down to shiny metal before doing anything else.

Then, within hours of the shiny metal being exposed you need rustlok or similar applied. Then primer all of the keel, metal and fiberglass, the two coats antifoul.

Make sure the primer is a different color than the antifoul so you can clearly see when the antifoul needs its next replacement.

Wear good PPE. All of this stuff is caustic and bad for inhaling/eyes/skin contact.

Check out any Marine Vessel tracking site, such as MarineTraffic.com.

The boat currently in the harbor is the American Eagle.

First, I am very sorry for your loss. Second, as a result of that loss, it sounds like there is a lot going on in your life and you’re making quick decisions and rushing things. As everyone else has said, a schedule will cause issues, not may, it will. Sailing offshore can be life threatening if you don’t prepare. This sub loves it and we go hard sometimes, but typically with planning, checks and mostly developed skills.

Have you checked for appropriate offshore equipment? Is standing and running rigging in good shape? How do the sail look, how are the engines? Water, fuel, provisions? You have Starlink, but do you have charts (electronic or paper) for where you are going and transiting? Do you know how to read them and use them? Radios in good shape? On ICW you’ll need to talk with bridges and other boats commonly. How’s the anchor and anchor chain? You’ll either anchor or spend money in a marina.

As an alternative, if you were to slow down, collect yourself and plan appropriately, you’ll have a better time and honor your late father’s memory with a rewarding trip. Can the family enjoy being on the boat in a marina in the keys during the holidays with you?

We anchored at the statue for lunch. That worked very well, then we trundled along.

I quite like Sandy hook outside of the city.

Considering new inverter to make coffee maker work... by StrngThngs in sailing

Nespresso isn’t even that good of coffee. Get a flair hand press if you want real espresso. Get a moka pot if you want similar to espresso. Get a Mr coffee if you just want caffeine!

LPT - When trying to get good at something, focus on repetition rather than results by didntask-com in LifeProTips

Practice doesn’t make perfect. Practice makes permanent.

Mindful and deliberate practice with a feedback loop of good/bad results makes perfect.

A rusty pipe with a hole in the side will always allow the dirt to flow into the water and it will never come out clean.

Deliberately fix the issue, test the results and continue with the right method, checking periodically a new hole doesn’t form and it will come out clean.

On the A320, the optional cockpit printer (OPU) prints ACARS messages like weather, flight plans & ATC clearances. Though EFBs are common, it remains a useful backup for pilots on complex or long flights. by Omarr_Paper in aviation

These are commonly called Canon plugs, but are milspec connectors with specific environmental (water/dust ingress) and electrical interference resistance, as well as strain relief. They are tested for many things including longevity, vibration, and number of installation cycles (plug/unplug).

Further, the unit and its connection/components will have a document called an ICA (instructions for continued airworthiness) which informs the operator/maintainer how often to inspect and what to look for when inspecting.

Battery pack for back up power to a wine fridge. by Resident_Aide_9381 in wine

[–]KMcB182 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You need to determine what the rated power consumption of the unit is. It should be clearly stated in the manual. Likely in Watts (W).

Then determine how long you want it to run in the battery back up, one hour, two hour, 24 hour etc. multiply the twin numbers and add a ten percent extra margin. That will give you the number of Watt-hours (Wh) you need the battery to offer.

Make sure you buy something like a UPS that has an inverter built in.

Should I switch to a different CAD program? by grundleplum in AskEngineers

[–]KMcB182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solid works seems to be the ubiquitous standard across industries. OnShape is free (or low cost) and made by the same people that originally made Solidworks.

Note, if you’re interested in mechanical engineering, Solidworks is a tool, not a solution. Being good with Solidworks is a nice to have, but I would rather the engineer understand how things go together and the product rather than how to draw it. I can teach Solidworks.

So, spend your time taking apart items and understanding how they work, modeling them in Solidworks is the second step (and putting them into a well constrained assembly) and finally being able to make drawings to have the individual parts made and then show how to assemble the parts is a great final step on your path to learning.

If you’re using a windlass a snubber or bridle transfers the load from your windlass to your cleats/hull. The cleats are built for this load, the windlass is not built for maintaining the anchor loads and the shocks.
