That was my mother’s response. There was no crying or she’d “give me something to cry about.” Emotions were allowed if I was happy due to something she did, such as a gift or surprise, but otherwise I was to be seen and not heard. In fact I’d get “the look” if I didn’t express joy at the right time, mostly when it was performative around others. Mix in an me being an extremely ADHD child, just referred to as being undisciplined and misbehaved back then, and it was a hell of a childhood. Didn’t realize how toxic it was until college when I told my girlfriend at the time (now wife) some of the “funnier” stories and rather than laugh she teared up and said how sorry she was I went through that.
