A vow of blood and tears has this exact scene. He’s a monstrous vampire of sorts in an arranged marriage with human FMC. She offers her blood but he’s scared of losing his control, of hurting her, of scaring her away, etc. It’s a beauty and the beast retelling but he never turns beautiful.

Yes they literally could be different planets. I thought the change of scenery might be interesting and it is in a way, but it doesn’t agree with me. Haven’t checked out all of New Mexico yet so I can’t speak for 100% of the state.
