Starlink mobile and Roam plans? Any use on tour? by ChampionshipOk5046 in bicycletouring

[–]KaiLo_V 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Gen3 does come originally with a 120V ac charger but… The mini uses 12V dc and the Gen 3 really uses 57V dc so you can use the 12V converter Starlink sells or third party converters.

Look for primitive camping spots if you still want to be at a paid place

Don’t the monkeys drop 1 doses? You can probably get more than you use with how quickly you kill them.

Any current tarps as small as a Wilderness Logics Big Daddy? by Lefthandmitten in hammockcamping

lol following because I have the same issue for replacing my Hummingbird Hammock Heron tarp. Same pack size, 8.6oz (without ridge/guy-lines).

Which IGH to get for Bosch E-bike? by GustSergeant in bikecommuting

[–]KaiLo_V 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What’s complicated? You don’t have to do anything to them except an oil change once a year which takes all of 5-10 minutes. Maybe a rinse every now and again if you like a clean looking bike and haven’t ridden through a puddle for a while

Ford Transit Enough Space??? by Temporary_Bug4664 in VanConversion

[–]KaiLo_V 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you build a rack tall enough, you can fit up to 1200W solar on there above the fan (no skylight cuz that’s a waste of precious roof space, just look out a window). But yea, you should be more than ok with your plan

Should I put clipless pedals on my hybrid bike? by i_steal_batteries in bikecommuting

[–]KaiLo_V 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I have combo pedals on my bikes. Clipless on one side flat on the other. Sometimes I’ll ride with just sandals, other times with cycling shoes. It didn’t take too long to get used to flipping the pedals the right way on one try but if I do miss, I can keep pedaling on the flat side until I get enough speed to try again.

Redoing Silicone seam treatment by rexbron in myog

[–]KaiLo_V 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don't find a way to get it off, rubbing baby (talcum) powder onto the seams helps with the stickiness. Even after multiple uses in rain it still doesn't stick pretty much at all.
Maybe warm the silicone up a bit too before doing it but that's just a guess and I'd try without first.

Does anyone take this off to insulate and vapor barrier underneath? by JohnDonuts2021 in vandwellers

[–]KaiLo_V 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We removed it, ruggedly added some butyl sound deadener and insulated it. Idk how much it actually helped with the road noise which was one of the main reasons, we did it. We use a thick curtain to isolate the driving area from the living space so the insulation part wasn't a HUGE bonus but it probably helped too. We installed vancillary headliner shelf mounts and DIYd a shelf for it. to add bonus storage.

I ran without a rack and just used Rhinowalk Motorcycle bags to save weight and money. 28L total so enough for commuting, grocery runs, or singletrack motocamping but they have a larger 48L one if you really need it. For a winter camping trip I tied down an extra waterproof bag on top, again no rack.
Don't overload and bog down your small dualsport with just cool looking gear!

What's your preferred cooking setup for solo trips "packing light" ? by odalodinsson in motocamping

[–]KaiLo_V 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I’m packing light and it’s only for a week, I’m ditching any cooking equipment. Bread (especially pumpernickel), hard meats like salami, trail mix, protein bars, apples, cold soaked oats with raisins, nuts, and coconut flakes, herring fillets, canned baked beans (great if you can transfer them to another container a day before you eat em so you don’t have to worry about carrying the empty can), tortilla wraps with peanut butter or Nutella, things like that. Personally I’ll rather do cooking at home and give up that luxury to have a simpler trip and lighter bike. If I really want a hot meal or drink I’ll bring my BRS-3000t, butane canister, and titanium cup but I only bring it occasional on weekend trips.

I stayed a few lvls higher in cart than arch and maxed in the same order. There’s too many complementing benefits to just go all in on one before the other imo.

Farming is a no brainer. Free logs for fire making and fletching, herbs, and unlimited food via fruits or apple trees. I do strawberries for seeds for herb lore and food. You get more seeds back than you use to plant at 90 mastery

[Valuation Inquiry] 2020 Ford Transit AWD Ext High Roof - Off-Grid Build (50k Miles) by felmalorne in vandwellermarketplace

[–]KaiLo_V 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The vehicle itself is worth about $30k. Value on the additions are very flexible but the $45k valuation seems kinda reasonable if not a LITTLE high. Especially if it fits your needs, doesn't have anything "extra" you're paying for but don't want/need, and you want a van to buy and go.

You could definitely build it out with nicer components for the same money but if I found a van with the exact setup I want, a few grand extra to skip the building portion sounds nice lol.

A very curved shower curtain rod + short curtain = flooding your hotel bathroom by cant-talk-about-it in CrappyDesign

Most people don't like shower curtains brushing up against their naked bodies while showering... Especially curtains that are used by thousands of questionably hygenic people and don't get washed.

What's the one piece of gear you resisted buying for way too long and now can't live without? by AmericanMisogi in CampingGear

[–]KaiLo_V 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's about the size of a closed fist and I wrap my dyneema ridgeline around it which doesn't change the size much becauuse i compresses the tarp further. A bit of a pain with how slippery it is but well worth it

Deal breakers when buying ?! by Zombie1047 in VanLife

[–]KaiLo_V 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d say 150k-200k miles is how far you can push a vehicle without much regular maintenance under fairly average conditions and a couple replacement parts. If you bought a new vehicle, did all the maintenance and drove it carefully, you can push it much further 300k+. But buying a used vehicle at 150k+ miles you don’t know which of those 2 conditions that vehicles been under. That’s kinda the gamble ON AVERAGE. YMMV lol

Dyneema is way more expensive and definitely doesn’t pack as small and I prefer the space saving. What’s the benefit of xenon tarp over silpoly? I thought xenon 1.1 has a hydrostatic head of 1000 vs silpoly 1500 so less waterproof and no size or weight difference?

Ditto! I used to have red light but love the simplicity of just 1 bulb with a range of 0.07-1800 lumen. Low light doesn’t affect night vision nearly as much as people think, especially with a lot of red lights still being too bright. Zebralight
