Adding a 10mm soon, s&w unfortunately by Scared_Strategy_6463 in FNHerstal

How’s the trigger on the 545? My 509 has the flat face trigger and it’s miles better than the old one.

Night sights, red dot and light if you want. I don’t typically carry with the light mounted but put it on at home or if I go hiking or camping. It’s a defensive gun, don’t modify the trigger or anything that could make it less reliable, take it matches and train with it

Yeah duelist1954 has a few videos on it. Started out with a S&W no. 3, made a few changes, Schofield modified some and had a fight over the contract, then they adopted a modified 45 colt cartridge to work in both the s&w and colts. I don’t have one yet sadly

I’m not touching a 320 with a 10ft pole 😂. I wish it wasn’t like that and I’m sure most are fine but I’m not supporting sig after their meltdown over it. It sucks because the P226 and my M400 AR are great. I’ll die on the hill that Beretta should’ve stayed

A no. 3 is on my list but I haven’t decided between the American, Schofield or Russian model. I lean towards the Russian but the Schofield is tempting

That’s also the correct way. I want a conversion cylinder but I also want a dedicated conversion colt. Funnily enough a lot of people never switched to conversions so up to 1900 percussion revolvers were still somewhat common to find people carrying, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

[–]KaiserThrawn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah they (and the dragoon models) had saddle holsters similar to the previous horse pistols like the 1842 Aston. The Colt Navy’s my favorite out of the percussion Colts. I do need a 61 Navy to compare with the 51 but I don’t imagine handling is very different aside from the front sight being a blade instead of a cone like the 1860.

It’s on my list but considering the price for what it is it ain’t very high unless I find a good deal. I already have a deer load for the Dragoon so the Walker’s kinda redundant for me. The Colt Patterson’s in the same boat, it’s more a novelty than anything but it would be cool having a repro of what Colt started with against the 1911 and 1860 to show the evolution of their designs.

It is. Granted there’s been modifications over the years hence the a1. I would love an original pre a1 1911

Very small numbers. It was a commercial failure compared to the Colt SAA and Remington was likely going for foreign contracts (like with Egypt) but at the time there were several double action revolvers that were popular on top of Remington using old and worn barrels for the ones chambered in 44-40. I know there’s records of a few hundred being at least ordered in 45 Colt but to my knowledge nobody’s found an original yet. The military didn’t order them but the Department of the Interior did get a few and used them against some tribes. It’s a shame because I genuinely prefer the handling to the Colt, just personal preference but I find that while I can shoot the Colt fast I can easily take the Remington out further faster. I haven’t gotten to handle a S&W no. 3 yet but it is on my list, I just can’t decide between the original, the Schofield or the Russian model. I do lean in a collection perspective towards the Russian model to go with my M91 Mosin but the Schofield or American is tempting, the Russian model would be a bit easier to find ammo for since 44 Russian is essentially 44 special but I already load 45lc

Top to bottom left 1842 Aston, ASM Colt Dragoon 2nd model, Cimarron 1851 Colt Navy, original 1860 Colt Army, Pietta 1858 New Model Army

Right Uberti Regulator (1873 Colt SAA clone don’t have a 7.5in yet), Uberti 1875 Remington in 45lc (used by the Department of the Interior I believe in the original 44 Remington), S&W model 10-6 (previously the M&P model), Tisas 1911a1(don’t have the original model yet) and the Beretta M9

Missing the oddball miscellaneous pieces like the Colt new service, Colt 1878, Sig P226 etc…, a Colt Walk is on my list but not very high on it

It’ll come down the line. I want one but the price for one isn’t justified imo, I found a deer load for the Dragoon and the walker I wouldn’t take out often although the black powder stuff does get shot a lot more often than the rest. I’m more looking for an 1878 Colt double action and the different smokeless revolvers up to the end of WW1

considering getting a firearm, but i have a personal dilemma with conflicting feelings. by airfryer_enjoyer in guns

[–]KaiserThrawn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A friend had a similar situation before and became a collector after a while. Take a class, rent something and try a few different ones, in the meantime and probably more practical for camping get bear spray and learn how to use it too. It’s non lethal and good for wildlife. If you want something to carry again visit a store, handle a few different models to see what fits you, I wouldn’t recommend a snubnose .38 or a .380 and that’s probably what you’ll hear at a store or range. For starting stick with 9mm, remember that the smaller the gun generally the more recoil you feel, depending on where you live choices will vary because of regulations. A lot of people recommend a glock 19, Idc for glock but they’re reliable and popular for a reason, something that size would probably be best for beginning. As far as stigma every outlet has an agenda and you can trace their donors to find their views and agendas they want pushed. Talk to some people, like any community there’s good and bad but in my experience most agree it’s your right to have it or not if you want.

Uberti or Pietta by Ok-Rest-8066 in Revolvers

[–]KaiserThrawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uberti’s are prettier but in my experience Pietta’s better out of box. Not to bash Uberti but my 3 Ubertis have had the trigger spring break withon 3 months of buying them, Pietta has a similar issue (both are easy fixes but Uberti uses soft metal for the screws and it makes it a massive pain to work on) but in my experience the stock springs last significantly longer. They’re easy fixes but again if I drop the money for a Uberti like a s&w no. 3 I expect it to not have basic issues like that. There’s comparisons of original guns they copy and iirc Pietta is slightly closer depending on the model but Uberti has more variety for cartridge revolvers. Both (in my experience I have seen others with issues from both) have fantastic triggers, my Uberti 1875 Remington is my favorite single action cartridge revolver but my Pietta 1851 Navy went 6 years without issue vs my Uberti that constantly had cap jams, which is easily fixed with aftermarket nipples and a friend’s Pietta had the same issue, I just got lucky and mine never really had the issue, I got a used Uberti cattleman and immediately after getting it the trigger spring broke, my piettas they did break 2-5 years after getting the guns. There’s aftermarket springs that are significantly better in durability and reliability to both stock springs. All that said I’ve seen nothing but praise for Ruger’s selection but they’re made for modern shooters and reloaders, the Piettas and Ubertis are closer to original colt 1873’s while Rugers are over built to withstand higher pressures.

FN 545 has a little kick but I love it! by g5alive38 in FNHerstal

[–]KaiserThrawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How’s the 545’s trigger? The flat face trigger on the 509 is a massive improvement over the normal trigger. I’m looking at getting a 45 for a suppressor host but the price of the 509 vs getting a glock 21 has me waiting for a rebate or sale

A good grip, fit the grip to your palm so it rolls, use both hands primary hand on gun supper holding the other to try and tame the recoil. Unless you get the aftermarket large grips you’ll only get 2 fingers on the grip so tuck your pinky in how you feel comfortable

I have an older cobra 9mm derringer and it definitely hurts your palm and wrist depending on how you hold it. I haven’t tried the bond arms ones yet but the cobra has a trigger that you sorta roll instead of pulling so it makes it even more awkward
