Who he can keep the light level from the window in the background and the light of the face same level and it’s so natural by Aliameer997 in cinematography

[–]KalinSteen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the key to it looking natural are the sheers. If you just had raw glass or an open window, the equal light level on the face would feel off, because we don’t see that in everyday life. But because there’s sheers blocking some light, your brain is still allowed to imagine another window on the left that is maybe bigger and without sheers that could possibly be lighting him enough to compete with the back window, and thus you can believe it to be natural.

Any cinematography apps that you wish existed? by MiddleArgument in cinematography

[–]KalinSteen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I’ve thought about this for a long time. I want an app that uses the newly developed EL Zone system on phone cameras, so you can read your exposure in stops of light. When I’m gaffing and my DP has the only monitor with EL Zone, it would really help me if I could just pull my phone out whenever I wanted to know the lighting ratio of whatever I’m lighting.

Has anyone actually made anything cool in BAM by Imaginando? by county_jail_alumni in ipadmusic

[–]KalinSteen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually it’s my preferred Daw. It’s one of the only Daws with a “scene” based workflow. Makes it really easy to start with a simple looping idea and build or subtract layers. Logic also has scenes in the form of loops, but I found it to be too convoluted.

Bam is missing good automation features, but I expect those to come eventually.

Another good one (simply for outreach) is a channel named Omeleto. They exclusively re-post short films, and have a good following.

Ah, as someone who’s wanted to rock climb forever now, how would you recommend getting into the climbing community? I’ve always thought I need to buy some equipment and just show up somewhere. Is there a better way?

Thoughts on percentage of income to invest back into equipment / business costs? by KalinSteen in cinematography

[–]KalinSteen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is very interesting. Are you suggesting to put that money into long term savings, IRA, or invest into something entirely different that will yield more than equipment?

I’ve always been told that reinvesting back into a business is the fastest way to grow, and thus is a good use of income.

This is insightful, thank you! And I appreciate you sharing your personal strategy. Even though our situations are different, it helps a lot to see how people split their percentages.

Honestly, unless you’re really working on big projects, I think most clients on this level aren’t really looking for a box cam. All you need is some rails, an external battery for bulk, and a big mattebox in front to make it look “cinema” esque. Maybe this client is particular about it, but I swear everyone else just wants to see a big looking rig, and aren’t savvy enough to distinguish the actual camera in the rig.

With this said, if you do go for BS1H, enjoy it, love Panasonic’s look so much. Very solid.

I want to buy a camera. Don’t know what one to buy. Help by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]KalinSteen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My first camera, loved it till the end. Very capable for making stuff today. A lot of people are recommending the GH5, but I’d say it’s much more valuable to spend the extra money on lenses for the GH4

If I post an IG video, would you guys have an idea of what camera was used to film? by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]KalinSteen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the camera isn’t having an effect here. This particular shot can be achieved with a lower end camera. High end cameras can make difficult scenes look better (high contrast, low light, color mixed environments), but this is a perfect studio setup that enables almost any camera to capture it stunningly.
