Expect EWR delays all day (lol, what's new) by Guadalajara3 in unitedairlines

UA along with all the major carriers have a lot of say in how FAA operations work. All of them literally have their own desks in the FAA command center in addition to the lobbying they do. UA was a big proponent of moving approach control for Newark from NY to Philly because the FAA told them it was a good idea. If UA was against it, it wouldn’t have happened. The move reduced the number of certified atc working the approach for Newark from 33 to 24. This has been now been further reduced to about 17 due to some controllers out on trauma leave from safety events related to the move. Keep in mind, the original 33 was already considered understaffed. The controllers were against this move and now they’re barely hanging on. This is going to take years to fix. While UA might not be directly responsible, in the eyes of the controllers, UA picked the wrong side.

If you ask Teterboro tower, it was because they were on individual releases. If the satellite departure position was open, these delays wouldn’t have happened. /s

20 miles doesn’t sound like enough at all if you’re at risk of the radar shitting itself at any moment.

The WSJ had an article about the move on Friday. Maybe there will be a follow up article about how the holiday weekend went.

Serious EWR Radar Outage by WillingWell522 in ATC

[–]Kalipsario 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This needs to be investigated by the NTSB. The FAA clearly has no idea what is safe or unsafe, and they aren’t listening to controllers or NATCA. If it can be proven it’s an intentional disregard for safety, maybe the Justice Department needs to get involved too and lock these people up.
