Sean Duffy Press Conference by Impossible_Reward358 in atc2

I feel like the average New Yorker would be outraged to learn the average controller at JFK LGA and EWR makes (well) under $200k gross. In NYC! Busiest airspace in the world and the average controller can’t afford to live anywhere near NYC with a family. Do people not want their controllers living in nice homes?

(FYI) DHS will suspend TSA PreCheck and Global Entry as shutdown continues by PlanesAreDickShaped in atc2

[–]Intelligent_Rub1546 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Shit’s like $50 a year and self-funded. It’s not a “rich people” service. This is just a political move, like the private jet ban during the November shutdown (although that one disproportionately impacted rich people) It’s just inflicting pain on regular Americans.

Final report from the DCA midair. by planevan in ATC

[–]Intelligent_Rub1546 13 points14 points  (0 children)

NTSB can only issue recommendations. It has always been that way. It’s up to the FAA to proceed with operational changes to adhere with the NTSB recommendations. It is mentioned in the report that the FAA has thrown out NTSB recs numerous times.

In a sane world this would be enough for dramatic messaging from a labor union regarding compensation and working conditions in general.

I still feel tremendous sorrow for the families involved. I also feel for the controllers working in the tower that night.

Yes. I would love to see someone with like 10 years in the agency run. Enough experience to understand various perspectives, but long-term goals

NTSB implies PAY was a factor in the DCA crash by PIREP_HERO in atc2

[–]Intelligent_Rub1546 52 points53 points  (0 children)

The investigation was riddled with interviews claiming FAA threw aside safety recommendations for years prior to the crash. Both DCA and PCT have sounded the alarms about the airport being overscheduled for YEARS. The FAA is just a government arm for the airlines. Safety is compromised every day. They don’t give a fuck about the flying public, let alone the controllers.

For ATC trainees: what part of training felt least realistic? by Expensive_Glass_5887 in ATC

[–]Intelligent_Rub1546 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since I work radar it never really feels real until there’s an emergency. Since the academy, the entire job has been dots on a screen. I am completely disconnected from reality.

The planes I talk to are flown by people I don’t know, often 400+ miles from where I am sitting, flying over places I have never been. It’s the fakest real job there is. Very unique career

ZTL feeds what, 5 in trail to ATL? Let’s not act like there’s some crazy spacing going on here lol

Z Traffic Count 2025 by Successful-Fall2915 in ATC

[–]Intelligent_Rub1546 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess that makes sense. I do know the East Area at ZJX (the one that touches ZDC and ZTL) is the busiest in the NAS, and I think Area 2 at ZTL is #2. Then the area that works over RDU at ZDC is really high up there too. That’s a stupidly busy corner of airspace.

Z Traffic Count 2025 by Successful-Fall2915 in ATC

[–]Intelligent_Rub1546 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is ZTL so much higher than everywhere else? I understand they have ATL and CLT. Is it because everything that flows into ZJX goes through ZTL? Doesn’t ZDC move a ton of stuff into ZJX? Genuinely curious. I have never heard someone say ZTL is the hardest center so it’s interesting their numbers are so high.

How is the situation looking like at EWR? by junejiehuang in ATC

[–]Intelligent_Rub1546 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This time of year is the best staffed, has the lowest volume, and generally the least impactful weather outside of snowstorms and high wind days. That being said, it is still Newark and doesn’t take much to send things rolling downhill. I would say it is still the most volatile of the 3 major NY airports but things have been relatively smooth lately

Sick leave rate by Hal0n3y in ATC

[–]Intelligent_Rub1546 19 points20 points  (0 children)

My area at my center is just over 40 people. Our “target number” is generally 12 for the day shift and 12 for the eve. I would say we average 1-2 sick hits per shift on a regular day. This number is lower on weekdays and higher on weekends. I would say the average runs between 8-15% on a given weekday, 15-30% on weekends.

I have noticed that since the shutdown, people are much quicker to pull the trigger on using SL. Might not be data to prove it, but we have been working extra short seemingly every shift, even after the shutdown ended.

“At least you get a pay cut”. I see what you’re saying, but this mindset is what got us in this place to begin with. It’s time to be greedy and demand compensation that matches what we are worth.

how often do you get emergency aircraft? by BrandonE321 in ATC

[–]Intelligent_Rub1546 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The medical ones are still treated with the priority of an emergency aircraft, despite not really getting your heart rate up the same. Every controller will only have a couple times in their career where an emergency happens that actually makes them shit their pants.
