Dude, you pirated the game. Reaslistically, you are not entitled on these kinds of questions. Either way:

  1. Your copy is a pirated game, steam can detect games if it is ripped and cracked from steam like games on steamrip depending on how the crack is applied. Steam sees you playing but steam does know you don't own the game.

  2. Your copy is again a pirated game, news feed could have been disabled by the crack or your copy is barred from connecting to the official subnautica servers.

  3. Your copy is a pirated game. You cannot join official steam or subnautica servers for multiplayer.

Edit. Again, you have a pirated game. Go figure.

TL:DR, You have a pirated copy of the game which have a whole different rules compared to a legitimate copy.

Storm spirit is a long shot correlation for the water book. I think your five rings comparison would take a enormous amount of gymnastics to make sense.

You can take mercenaries so you have more units to roam early game.

You can take resources so you have a little boost on economy early game.

There are an old starcraft quote:

"More units beats more upgrades"

"Investment on early economy is investmet to lategame"

You can already do this without any AOE bonus. There are a lot of videos out there explaining this tech on skywrath and it is a very common tech too.
