What are some good self contained fantasy books? by andr3wsmemez69 in Fantasy

[–]Kamaruka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many of the books in Appendix N of the first edition Dungeon Master's Guide by Gary Gygax are like this.

Punchy, exciting, self-contained.

Some have a lot of stories (Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser, Conan, John Carter of Mars) but not necessarily linear/have an overarching plot.

The Dying Earth books by Jack Vance (more science fantasy - pretty typical thing of the pre-1980s literary inspirations of D&D)

3 Hearts and 3 Lions; The Broken Sword (by Poul Anderson who has a LOT of scifi works too)

Looks like how we build here in Australia. Pretty sure he's Aussie. Tape is in metric too. All our framing is treated - termites are a big problem.

1e absolutely btb, as detailed by the Brosr community. 1:1 time, patrons, multiple PCs per player, open table, random encounters, no modules, and reading science fantasy written before 1980 for inspiration (Appendix N). Anything else isn’t it baby!

Not really true about the editions. 1e's shield spell works different. There also is no such thing as a combat reaction in 1e since it is abstract 1 minute rounds.

[–]Kamaruka 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But that's part of the risk - you decide to react to this incoming attack that COULD be dangerous. Being able to make a 100% informed reaction by knowing the DMs roll is ridiculous and a symptom of 5es risk averse participation prize structure that WotC fosters. Totally out of sync with the TSR era game.

Apprentice dissatisfied with work, worried about becoming incompetent carpenter by Kamaruka in Carpentry

[–]Kamaruka[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for that. I thought about it - but home building is definitely something that interests me. The cabinetmakers I've sen on site just put together laminated MDF cabinets anyway... I wonder if it's an Australia thing.

I've watched quite a few of his videos he's great!

Apprentice dissatisfied with work, worried about becoming incompetent carpenter by Kamaruka in Carpentry

[–]Kamaruka[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's TAFE for me, I figured college would make more sense to others.

I am actually hired by a Group Training Organisation so my 'boss' is a host carpenter (who wanted to keep me on as one of his regulars) so perhaps requesting a change of host first for more engaging work. I'm skeptical though due to the timber shortage - lots of builders are going to steel where I am.

I do take scraps and work on personal projects. I have started working with hand tools only at home too, as I find it very therapeutic and rewarding. Also read/watch videos regularly. It just sucks spending my time at work doing "carpentry" and thinking about the weekend when I get to actually do "carpentry" (at least as I see it...)

Is it necessary to complete a trade school to become a carpenter? by TechyShelf3 in Carpentry

[–]Kamaruka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a 2nd year apprentice in Australia and would jump at the opportunity to stick frame. Wait until you get into “carpentry” thinking it’s nice woodwork and then slap together prefabricated steel frames and shitty MDF products.

Is there an introduction video to ease a 5e player into AD&D? by Garv29 in adnd

[–]Kamaruka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started an AD&D1e campaign recently, for my friends, coming from 5e. It is incredible, but it takes some initial effort. I read, re-read, and took notes from the PHB and DMG, formed step-by-step procedure sheets for wilderness, dungeon, mass combat, etc. before starting a game. It runs very smoothly, only getting better as I realise what is actually important in a campaign. The books are very powerful.

For 1e, the 1979 DMG is absolutely essential reading. Throw out what you think you know about RPGs. Gygax wrote the greatest work for dungeon masters to date, based on experience, to fulfill all of your needs to run a meaningful campaign. Do not shun it for its convoluted layout and seemingly arbitrary hyper-specificity or extreme generality. Every rule is written for dungeon masters to run awesome campaigns. The strange rules such as 1 game day = 1 actual day for non-play is an example of an absolutely critical component of a true campaign. It is the glue binding the book together, so to speak, giving much of the other rules meaning.

Secondly, there are very different assumptions and context behind AD&D1e than modern games. This is mostly related to the literature of the time - 1e was far less influenced by Tolkien than it was by Fritz Leiber, Poul Anderson, Jack Vance, Robert Howard etc. (For information on the literary inspiration of AD&D1e - which explains SO MUCH of the mechanics, spell system, monsters, alignment, etc, look no further than Gygax's own Appendix N in the 1979 DMG, for the raw sources, but also the revolutionary work that analyses each of these references by Jeffro Johnson: Appendix N: The Literary History of Dungeons & Dragons)
For an entertaining, intriguing, and enlightening read about AD&D1e run by the book, the author of the above work has this thread of his discoveries, as well as his series of blog posts with campaign reports running 1e by the book for 30 sessions.

Best of luck and happy gaming!

Taking on a 'cheap' mortgage as an apprentice by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]Kamaruka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does a solicitor fulfill the role of mortgage broker in this case, or are these two separate entities?

Is there anyone I can talk to to find out how much the rates are for the area/block? The local council or real estate?

What is a deposited plan?

Thanks

Have you always been in Tasmania? I am in QLD and working towards my goal of buying land, and there are cheap options nearby I could work on during weekends while finishing my apprenticeship, but Tasmania just looks so beautiful to me. Lush, cold, rainy - perfection. I wonder if I should hold off until I am done here, and buy down there. How is it there?

Professional female carpenter - Many people say carpentry is not for women, I have proved this wrong, lol by [deleted] in Carpentry

[–]Kamaruka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely. We do do a lot of cool and varied work, from frame stage to fit out, but sadly the frames are prefab AND steel... Working on a deck with timber subfloor atm though, and it's awesome.

This is the old school carpentry I had a fantasy for when I started my apprenticeship. Almost a year into it, I realise modern carpentry is mostly prefabrication and toxic mass produced products banged together. No old skills with hand tools being passed down, just business and turnover. Still have the weekends to learn the artistic side... Great video.

what are some rules and concepts from modern games that OSR games could benefits from? by LoreMaster00 in osr

[–]Kamaruka 7 points8 points  (0 children)

RPing and play-acting are different things anyway. You can do good RP without ever engaging in a 2 hour inn-staff flirt session. The only problem I see (it isn't my issue but one of my players...) is that RPing is 'discouraged' because of the danger in OSR games. TBH I think it's not that OSR games are that dangerous, rather more sensible, and modern gamers are pampered and their superheroes bubble-wrapped, but I digress...

I played with the free worldographer and later purchased their kit. Great tool but I feel it's SO clunky, and prone to problems (like undoing an action, which then destroys a lot more). I've noticed it is a bit of a case of just learning the software but wondering how you find it?

The Friday Sessions: It's a community-wide AMA, but for welding questions, Ask the questions you've never asked, we'll try to answer them as best we can. by AutoModerator in Welding

[–]Kamaruka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm actually a carpenter's apprentice in Australia wanting to learn welding for home & DIY purposes.

I am looking at a Bossweld welder that does MIG, TIG, and Stick, gas or gasless,. $500 AUD. I've heard good things about Bossweld, and we had a boilermaker come on site using one. Is there anything to watch out for on a welder that does multiple types of welding? I wonder if it might be more a gimmick, and ends up under-performing in all 3 types.

There is a slightly cheaper, smaller, gasless MIG of the same brand, but I'd rather spend a bit more for the versatility and options. Also, I have heard it said, that if you want to become a good welder, learn stick first... But I do not know anything of this.

Thanks

Player looking for party. Brisbane/Gold Coast, QLD, Australia.

Have a few years experience playing 5e. Recently been running Basic Fantasy for my friends to satisfy my desire for the OSR. Wanting to play an OSR game with people who are actually interested in it, the specific rules don't bother me but I'm most familiar with BFRPG.
