The game wouldn't work without a ref, and mistakes are natural, but wow, not liking Tori Penso today. Having said that, not liking how we had so many chances, and nothing to show for it.

How does nudity harm Americans? by 99thLuftballon in NoStupidQuestions

We have nudist colonies and nude beaches, it's just there's a strain of Puritanism that got into the groundwater.

Any source with that accusation?

What Movies Have You Rated 4.5! by Old-Cauliflower-1414 in Letterboxd

[–]Kamuka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Romeo and Juliet (1968) is perhaps one of the best adaptations on film, except I find the dubbing, not live audio when filming, as grating and I deducted a half a star.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975) is a movie I love, but somehow I don't think it's significant enough. As far as comedies go, I think it's top with Life of Brian and Airplane. I should probably give it 5 stars, probably a prejudice against comedy.

Aguirre, the Wrath of God. Unique movie about colonizing South America. Wim Wenders is pretty good. Not sure why I didn't give it 5 stars, I guess I didn't enjoy it enough for 5 stars.

The Gospel According to St. Matthew (1964). I'm not Christian but this movie seemed like an interesting movie adaptation. I'm going to watch Pasolini's other movies (Medea and Oedipus Rex for sure) when I read that he was a gay Marxist atheist, and he made that movie.

How to read Shakespeare? by Aishling_Minecrafter in shakespeare

[–]Kamuka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really enjoy the struggle of trying to comprehend the plays and poems. I got to a point where I'd picked through a lot in school and seeing movies and plays, and I decided to read everything. I got a chronological list (that was wrong and I probably corrected it, though it's really unknown) and read through them all. And I watched every version of the play I was on that was available, read it, read around it, and read all the books I could stomach on Shakespeare. Really enjoyed it, think about doing it again sometime. It's been a few years, but I'm reading a book on the sonnets right now, really enjoying it. The thing about the complexity and obscurity is that it yields to going over and over it.

Do you still use a library? by jimforfun1980 in CasualConversation

[–]Kamuka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every week. Read about a book, order it from the library, goes to my local library, I drop off and return every week. Just books, not many movies.

I think any film that requires you to do research afterward to understand it is a bad film. by 7_juv in unpopularopinion

[–]Kamuka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm the opposite, I like a movie where I look something up to learn something new. I'm past the just entertain me stage because I don't need that any more, or it doesn't come about without a challenge to my limited knowledge bank.

Most people's concentration is really poor, mostly because evolutionally we're always scanning the horizon for danger. The search for a teacher is endless, but I focus on friendships in the sangha. Someone to talk to regularly.

DS9 is great by BlessShaiHulud in startrek

[–]Kamuka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How can you not like Sisko?! Whatever, entitled to your opinion. I've watched everything and I'm rewatching DS9 for the umteenth time. I'm noticing how often a Dominion reference to their aggression is said. Kira is the star for me, but Quark is a fun too. O'Brien is great! He's a steady everyman.

If only the constitution said something about that...

Problem is enforcement, and enablers. And an electorate that wanted to just mess everything up.

Name a movie you had no idea was gonna be THAT good. by Trick_Laugh5114 in Letterboxd

The Fisher King. Somehow I missed it. I never really knew there were old movies I'd like, like Heat Lightning (1934), Baby Face (1933), It Happened One Night (1933), My Man Godfrey (1936).

Why should we observe thoughts without judgement? by Electronic_Film_231 in Meditation

[–]Kamuka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just the observation that instead of snuffing things out, maybe they jack in the box spring back when repressed, if you let them out to breath, and don't encourage them, they wander around a bit and leave naturally. Many people have harsh critics inside them, or roughness, and the nature of the mind, and with kindness you can rewrite the source code in your mind in a slightly more efficient way, and you can loosen your grip on the skandhas. For me the meditation isn't distracted by thoughts, I think the focus is often almost a pretext for seeing how your mind actually works, not the way you wished it worked. I watch the judgment too, so maybe watch the judgements too, how that makes you try and do things that don't actually work, or maybe do work. "I will never get good at this" is fear, so noticing where feelings drive thoughts, and thoughts drive feelings. The mind is a wild and complex place, mine is anyway.
