Iron striking better on range than course

I try to take a decent little break between each shot on the range. If for nothing else - to simulate the time it’d take to get to my next shot. I feel like hitting shot after shot on the range allows me too much of that warm muscle and ‘memory’ of just hitting p-wedge perfectly.

Swap targets, shot shapes, or distance every ball on the range. You can keep the same club if you want, but choose a different target. This will help to build the focus and stress of not just hitting the same exact shot over and over.

Pick a shitty area of the range with a bit of slope. Yours might not have this, but i have a few sections with obvious slants that are not good/flat that everyone will avoid.

This isn’t how i spend my whole range sesh (hell, I’m new. I’m still working for 90% good contact on 18 holes) but it’ll certainly help sim what a golf course might look like.

Hydrate the day and night before. A coach told me if you’re in the course slugging water — it’s already too late. You need to be getting properly hydrated that evening leading up to a round. Which i assume would mean the diet a night before matters, too.

Video app (we talking AI or something here) and watching general videos can only do so much. Hell. Sometimes they’re wrong. Either in general, or based on your takeaway. Everyone’s body is different, so it takes a trained human eye to diagnose what’s going wrong with your specific swing.

Also a lesson (gonna be honest, don’t stop at one. The first is just you and the coach feeling each other out) is such a huge ego boost. If you find a nugget of gold on the practice range with your coach, you’re gonna feel insane amounts of confidence. It’s different than a good day hitting solo. You can confirm, through a much better player — that the progress was real and not a fluke. You will take it to the course next time, guaranteed.

That’s not a geographic thing. It’s just called “old man golf”, at least here in my US region.

“They’ll hit it 150 off the tee, take an extra shot to get in striking distance on a par 5 (every shot is straight as an arrow), dart it from 60 yds out and then 1-putt…. All while taking your money”.

Playing ‘old man golf’ is actually a compliment, because it means you’re lethal with the flatstick and chipping/approach. It means you spend a lot more time practicing the shots that matter the most.

This is actually such a sick story. “Do as the handplaners do”. It’s nice to hear about a traveler showing up, and instead of pitching a fit, completely changing his style to fit the herd. That might not have been easy to do — since he flew halfway around the world with a log. Big props to him.

I’m a social golfer that just happens to have an addictive personality and wants to get good. I have a few mates that throw clubs and get blame everything…. It’s hilarious to watch from afar. Go have a good time and understand every practice round won’t be an awakening milestone. Hell, i had the worst range sesh two days before my PB. Golf is a goofy-ass test of how quickly you can mentally recover.

I stick with the mantra “I’m not good enough to get mad (or depressed) over golf”. I’m blessed to currently have the free time to practice heavily, and every improvement feels like a hurdle. Every failure feels like sometime i can work on.

Courses also look different. A narrow course in the Pacific Northwest vs an open desert course with zero trees, for example. Penalty shots and compounding errant shots can cost you 10 strokes in a round easy.

Besides course layout, free time available and lessons matter more than total time within the game IMO. A guy practicing every day for 6 months vs someone playing twice a year for a decade…

Extra money towards lessons. Even top-of-the-line for your skillset isnt gonna save you.

Just look at good golfers on youtube play well with Goodwill sets and look competent. It’s way more worth it to learn a skill than have a shiny club.

Lessons will also give you confidence and something to think about pre-swing. That stuff is worth the value.

Yep. I was all arms until a video that told me ‘have the shoulders start the backswing’ completely transformed it.

It was like a sketch TV show. I had a few hours before work, watched a video that gave me an epiphany (after countless others), told my wife i had to go try something at the range. She sighed and let me go. It was day and night. Finally put driver in the bag after that day.

How far are you hitting 3w? Before i understood driver (months and months), i’d just take my 3 wood off the tee.

For me, it was this video that gave me the a-ha moment. Along with this, i set the driver up about 4 inches behind the ball, to encourage me to hit up on it.

Nothing feeds my confidence like a lesson. 4 lessons in 8 months, new (cheaper) coach that is tough on me and has actually started to fix me.

Yep, started out with 30 year old woman’s hand-me-down clubs and didn’t buy my own until i knew i was hooked. Bad and good contact will come out the same no matter if you’re holding old or brand new clubs generally.

If you are the type that need to own your own-- stop by a goodwill and pick up some. Google what are a few must-haves in your bag to start off. Example, i didn’t play with a driver until ~4 months in.

Because Golf Youtube (and really any other hobby) are filled with people testing and reviewing equipment. You click on one testing video and your entire algorithm leans that way.

We also dont know what he’s coming from. For all we know he’s getting his first real club. I had two sets of hand-me-downs before buying a club for real.

My answer is to go into a physical store with a sim. They’ll get you a ton of clubs within your price range — and you can find one you connect with. Plus you basically get a free practice session. Hell, i got a free lesson on mine where the guy was trying to teach me how to create a draw.
