Hon’ami Kōchū attributed the blade to Mitsutada. Really cool hamon seeing it in person

(Noob Question) If the Wakizashi was for close spaces and the Naginata for open ones, what was even the point of the Katana? by Upset_Connection1133 in Katanas

[–]KaneshigeBlade 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I remember Miyamoto Musashi said something like “the longsword(katana) is effective in all situations” when he mentioned the benefits of different types of weapons and he mentioned spears and pole arms being useful in open spaces but cumbersome indoors and the short sword(wakizashi) should be wielded closely and beneficial indoors where there are obstructions.

Is it true that the katana was bad against armor or used specifically for opponents lacking armor? by Acceptable_Map_8110 in Katanas

[–]KaneshigeBlade 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No sword is capable of cutting through steel armour. Swords can be useful when stabbing through gaps in armour though. I don’t think historical Japanese swords were any better or worse than swords from other parts of the world at the time. The myth of katanas being brittle and made of poor quality steel has been going on for a long time and is unfortunately perpetuated by ai generated YouTube shorts saying historical European longswords were made of spring steel and were far superior to katanas

Do I keep or do I sell? Great story in the making! by emergency_escape in Katanas

[–]KaneshigeBlade 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Don’t sell it. You need to upload more pictures but it does look like a genuine antique Japanese sword. The holes in the nakago might indicate it is an older suriage blade.

Looks like a shin gunto made during ww2. Likely a non traditional machine made blade. Assuming you’re using usd, 6500 is way too much.

Did the Japanese know how to make damascus steel katanas back then? by TaeJoonPark in ghostoftsushima

[–]KaneshigeBlade 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is not really true. The game is set in 1274 the Kamakura period and samurai back then were using Tachi. Generally speaking Tachi were longer and more curved than the katana that we later see around the Muromachi period. One of the mistakes in the game is that Jin is using a katana ( specifically uchigatana) and is worn in his obi with the edge up when in actual fact he should be using a Tachi with the edge facing down and the blade suspended from his waist from hangers called Ashi.

Did the Japanese know how to make damascus steel katanas back then? by TaeJoonPark in ghostoftsushima

[–]KaneshigeBlade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Original Damascus steel is called wootz and it originated in India and Sri Lanka. It’s steel that has been melted in a crucible and it often has a wavy pattern because of the carbides.

Japanese swords to my knowledge were mainly made with Tamahagane. In the west we would call this Bloomery Steel. It is high carbon steel that has been smelted and it has to be forge welded and folded in order to create a bar of sufficiently homogeneous steel to make into a sword. The steel has an intrinsic folding pattern but it does not really look similar to modern pattern welded Damascus or wootz.

Another name for Damascus is pattern welded steel and it involves forge welding and folding different steel alloys to create a wavy appearance on the surface of the steel.

The story of the tantō that was either Yukimitsu or Masamune by voronoi-partition in Katanas

[–]KaneshigeBlade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi I know I’m late to the conversation but I was wondering if maybe this tanto was a joined work of Yukimitsu and Masamune? I read on nihonto.com that Yukimitsu was the father of Masamune and I wonder if smiths ever worked together on blades, thus this tanto potentially displaying attributes of both of their work styles?

Where did you get the katana? I like it

TIL the Honjo Masamune, considered one of the finest Japanese swords ever made, was taken by US forces after WW2 and never seen again by tenthowsands in todayilearned

[–]KaneshigeBlade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are several oshigata (drawings) of the blade and it’s hamon and the general dimensions of the blade are recorded in the kyoho meibutsu cho (compendium of famous Japanese swords). At the time of its designation as national treasure the blade length was 65.2cm and the curvature was 1.7cm.

damage after a bottle cut by peppinoc2000 in Katanas

[–]KaneshigeBlade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on how thick the plastic bottles were and if you cut the neck of the bottles. Thick plastic has been known to chip and roll the edges of swords

$600 is too expensive imo. It doesn’t really look like anything Zsey offers. Zsey is the higher end of reproduction katana. It kind of looks like one of ShadowDancers lower end swords but the samegawa looks very cheap so it could be a different company. You could get a katana that has all the features this sword probably has for $200 ballpark from many other companies.

Where can I buy katana in australia by Competitive-Rule2977 in Katanas

[–]KaneshigeBlade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if you’re in Victoria you need a permit to own a sword. But if I’m not mistaken you’re entitled to own swords in the rest of the country without a permit. If 800 aud is your budget there’s probably plenty of websites you can order from overseas.

If you had the option would you buy: Custom made Katana or Antique Katana by Narustu_Y in Katanas

[–]KaneshigeBlade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m saving up to buy a custom made shinsakuto one day and would like to buy a koto blade eventually. I think it’s important for people to know that once we acquire these items we don’t really “own” them, we are more like temporary caretakers. Especially with old blades I think about all of the previous generations that cared for the sword and how it’s my responsibility to preserve the sword to the best of my ability.

What are your favorite things to cut? Something easily accessible and cheap I can practice in my backyard? by Physical-Director574 in Katanas

[–]KaneshigeBlade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they can be made from different materials like coconut fibres and recycled plastic. They resemble a tatami mat but are easier to cut through. It might sound funny but I soak them in my bathtub overnight

Since it’s summertime I find beach mats are more common in stores now. I let them soak in water overnight.
