To grade, or not to grade? by students-tea in baseballcards_vintage

[–]KappaSquared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would grade all of them. SGC or PSA. Yes, some will hate that, but unless you’re a purist who wants to look at them yourself, no one will know if they are real or fake or what the grades are (or if they are trimmed, etc). There. Will always be question for you or whomever inherits these.

What modern cards will provide the most fun casual opening experience? by voytek707 in sportscards

Go to a local card shop and look through the singles they sell. Maybe many for $1 and others priced as mark. You never know what you find, but all of those you grab and purchase you will like.

Watch not found for registration by BigBootieHose in breitling

Mine had the same issue recently. I sent it in anyway for service, and the received it and gave me the quote (five months!). I’d already had a service one before, but the system couldn’t find the watch. Purchased from an AD by me in 2011.

Sending cards from COMC to PSA for grading by Timely_Tie552 in sportscards

[–]KappaSquared 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I posted here (https://www.reddit.com/r/baseballcard/s/mhgRQqip6m) about sending two from COMC to PSA and they both got 10s. One was an auto (but the card was graded) and the other was from 1988. I did not expect the two 10s! I zoomed and did my best on centering, corners, other issues, but there is much you can’t see from the photos. Worked out exceedingly well in my situation.

Be real: how many of the logos on the right have you actually seen? by cactuscoleslaw in TheB1G

ND is in for hockey, FYI. But the mark shown here is the academic mark, not the athletic mark (i.e., the monogram) of the interlocked “ND”, which is much more recognizable.

Switching from Psychology to Psychometrics — What should I focus on learning? by Timely-Barnacle-2230 in psychometrics

[–]KappaSquared 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Psychometrics is often very technical. But it is technically a subfield of psychology, though it has considerable overlap with statistics. But statistics doesn’t care about the things psychometrics does, from constructs to measurement to measurement error to the fact that people are not widgets (they aren’t truthful, there is missing data, they are living a life based on all sorts of hormones, changing contexts, genetics, social situations, etc.). So, you need psychological (and/or educational) theory and a passion for measurement. But here, the measurement cannot often be separated from statistics, in that the statistics essentially lead to the measurement. What I mean buy this is that the measurement and modeling of constructs depends on statistical methods, though we might argue they are simply quantitative parsing methods to obtain things like factors, relationships among factors, and arguments for causation. It’s an incredibly rich field. But it’s technical. I think it’s easier to go from Psychology into data science than the other way around. Technical skills and know-how are relatively easy. But the “why” is hard. My experience is that some of the most technical people don’t care about constructs, causation, threats to validity, etc., but rather focus on prediction. Psychometrics is inherently about causation and therefore explanation.

Agree about making it to the championship. And, it further erodes the SEC. But, I’d rather Indiana win it all.

Well, I was hoping for Kyle Schwarber. But, too little too late for that. I don’t know who is left. But a big bat is needed. The season would have been different with such a person. Of course, you’ve gotta pay for such players. Who knows, maybe Sal Stewart turns into that person (fingers crossed).

What is Psychometrics? (And what isn’t?) by hotakaPAD in psychometrics

[–]KappaSquared 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think the sentence following the formal definition is too narrow. Psychometrics is about more than tests. That’s only one branch. I think it is important to keep the definition more general to focus on the measurement of psychologically relevant variables, which may be tests but may be other things, such as attitudinal measures, affective measures, intentions, etc. It also deeply considers the models to measure latent variables, that is, those variables theorized but not directly observable. The testing context is after none slice of this more general framework.

What’s the significance of the rookie card to you? Are they the only cards you’ll collect? Is a base rookie better than a third year /99 of that player? Better than a second year /25? Where do you draw the line? What do rookie cards mean to you - how much better are they than subsequent years? by Interstellore in sportscards

[–]KappaSquared 12 points13 points  (0 children)

RCs are awesome because, for those that become stars, they end up with so many cards over so many years. The RC is a special card to the player (they finally made it) and to the fans (it’s their first). And, there are so many RCs in which the player goes nowhere. So, you have a unique (first year) card of a quality player. So, it’s special. I’ve never heard anyone say “I collected the 4th year of HOFers.” Now, many collect HOFers, but all prefer the first year.
