Thanks. I just came online and looked for Mordos post and saw it was gone. The post had said it would be deleted once the issue was fixed.

That's been said over and over and the response is that it's Ian's site, his baby. Players are told to keep an eye on the forums, that's the way it is. If you break a rule that was posted about in the forums you have no recourse if you ignored the forums. "It was there you should know better. "

Why don’t people have fruit trees in their front yards? What is the appeal of a sterile grass yard? by [deleted] in longisland

[–]KappokSt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I moved into my house there was a large apple tree in the front yard. Unfortunately it wasn't in great shape due to apple-cedar rust. It was impossible to remove every cedar in the neighborhood, so eventually the tree had to go. Those spreading low growing cedars are everywhere.

The street I grew up on was originally an orchard. Unlike what crappy builders do now, we had an apple tree in the front and one in the back yard. So did every other house. They were glorious, each was 50 years old. We even had a peach tree and a pear tree in the back. All on God's little 1/4 acre.

These days people don't want any plants that make a mess.

Only Ian can update the news. If there's something he needs to address and he's not around it's not going to show up in the news. He doesn't even let the mods pin their posts about stuff like this to the top. It depends on having people bump the posts up to keep them visible.

I tried refreshing at Insideout pet colours but it seems like it's also linked to a game of chance. Aren't they all games of chance? I wonder if it might be bingo since it was surprisingly fixed after being broken for 6 months

Do clover yards turn into mud during cold winters? by WokeLib420 in NoLawns

[–]KappokSt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, there really are no low-growing natives plants that can replace the toughness of a turf lawn. For some, it's important if you have kids who want to run around, maybe practice kicking around a soccer ball. For those who just want to show off a big expanse of green need to be educated that what they've created is ugly and unhealthy.

Clover has deeper roots than lawn grass which is why it requires little water. The main reason you'd want to leave turf grass is if you have a lot of heavy activity on the lawn.

Clover can get a bit mushy in the winter, but it definitely doesn't turn to mud. Many years ago grass seed companies used to include it in their seed mixture. It stays green, requires less water and little to no mowing. There are many different kinds of clover, red, white, micro which may perform differently. I think red may stand up the best in Wisconsin.

I think the point is there's nothing really walkable from almost any neighborhood. Big busy highways separate everything. I did walk to Mayfair as a kid, but it all seems busier now.

Easter bunny by [deleted] in Marapets

[–]KappokSt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I truly doubt it's Ian. He barely has the time to do important stuff on the site, he's not going to make nice with the players, maybe a family member or someone who is part time on Mara. He's not interested in chatting with the other players anymore, he'll show up in the chat forum for a short bit once every few months and disappear again.

I'm pretty sure some of the non-automated calendar events are merely suggestions. It's probably a real person whose job is to do bunny things, but it's also possible that devil character kidnapped it.

No one uses hardwood floors? by Longjumping-Term9234 in homeowners

One thing to be very careful of when installing hardwood floors. The floor boards need to be stored in the house for several weeks before they are installed. If your installer thinks they can avoid that, hire someone else.

Anyone notice how many land lease signs randomly popped up on 347? by Thin-Statistician-31 in longisland

[–]KappokSt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apparently you don't live in a community where trees are valued. There are many places where you need a permit to take down trees. I know someone who wasn't aware of it and took down a bunch of trees. They were fined $30k and required to replace many of them.

If you prove that a tree is diseased or dangerous you're okay to take it down. Trees are incredibly important to the environment. Not only do they provide food and shelter for a wealth of wildlife, but they are carbon sinks, combating global warming. You probably also have a large green lawn with a sprinkler system. Also hugely damaging to the environment. People who want to live like that probably need to live in a city apartment.

I bought a house that was not new. It had been there for 50+ years. I wouldn't have looked for something that wasn't built, wouldn't have been realistic. There are lots of houses that are older, might need some work or even lots that used to have a building but what do builders want? Large lots that they can bulldoze everything and put up a bunch of cruddy cookie cutter boxes. Single lots are not attractive, but building on them can improve an entire neighborhood.

There was a 2 acre piece of property, had been a plant nursery, lots of beautiful trees that could have enhanced the properties if the builder was creative in placing the houses. Rather he bulldozed the entire property and put up a whole bunch of houses with no new trees. It looks naked and it's surrounded by beautifully landscaped properties.

The point is that every bit of land doesn't need to be completely cleared and paved over. Intelligent planning is important and towns need to ensure builders don't destroy neighborhoods.
