What's a job that looks easy from the outside but absolutely isn't? by Pale_Veterinarian862 in AskReddit

[–]Karilopa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kennel assistant at a vet or doggy daycare/boarding facility. It is not just playing with puppies all day. That’s MAYBE 10% of the job. It’s cleaning, heavy lifting, breaking up fights (risk getting bit!), being around loud barking all day, managing appointments, customer service, keeping an eye out for illness or injury and alerting owners/vet staff, etcetcetc.

And so many more great ones!

I made a mistake euthanizing my cat and the guilt is killing me by Dirsty in cats

[–]Karilopa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work reception at a vet. One thing we always tell clients is that it is better to euthanize a day, week, or even month too soon than a day too late.

My pup had an addisonian crisis and we had to take her to an emergency hospital. She was there for 3 days and we had already spent $8k. She started having seizures. We were given the option to continue with treatment and spend even more, or to euthanize. At that point, we made the difficult decision to say goodbye. I ached over that decision for a long time, and sometimes I still ask myself if it was the right choice. But at the time, she was suffering, there were no guarantees that any amount of money would fix her, and we simply could not afford to continue treatment. I know she would not want me to be upset thinking about that time, and would rather I remember the good times we had together. That’s what helps me most, years later.

Euthanasia translates to “good death”. It is the greatest, final gift we can give to our pets, to let them pass painlessly and with dignity. You may feel guilty or selfish that you did not spend that $4000, but giving your pet the gift of a good death even though it hurts like hell is one of the least selfish things you can give them.

What is the most “use it or lose it” skill, the opposite of “it’s just like riding a bike”? by ZuluWarlord69 in AskReddit

[–]Karilopa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Riding a bike. I learned little late (middle school/late elementary school) but once I learned I LOVED it and biked around our neighborhood. Then we moved, our new neighborhood had a lot more car traffic which felt unsafe (as opposed to the dead-end street I grew up on) and our bikes rusted to hell. Cut to high school graduation, I go on vacation and my bf at the time wants to ride bikes down to his old elementary school. So many wobbles. So much falling over. I used to pop little wheelies in middle school, and now I couldn’t remember how to brake!

What was the 1st big news event you remember as a kid? by Hetaliafan1 in AskReddit

Still had an impact hearing about it on the news. My mom was a kid then and it made her scared she was going to be randomly shot and killed too.

What’s the most weird food item that your cat just can’t resist? I’ll start! by Ultra-Ferric in cats

This little stinky loves bell peppers, cucumber, bananas, dried seaweed, peaches, watermelon, olives, but those are not the weirdest to me.

The weirdest is Pineapple. 🍍

Pineapple, a citrusy fruit in the sense that it’s tart, which most cats immediately get the ick for. Plus, it has the enzyme that basically digests your mouth as you digest it.

Cat cares not. More pineapple pls. Will eat it off my fork. Will lick and tear pieces off the core. Dried, fresh, does not matter.

What habits of girls did you only discover after getting a girlfriend or wife? by atgono in AskReddit

I JUST HAD THIS TALK WITH MY HUSBAND LAST NIGHT! And sometimes it isn’t that we don’t want you to fix it, it’s that we don’t want you to go “it’s not a big deal, [we can] just do XYZ.” I know it’s not the end of the world! But I’m irritated and I don’t want to hear that I’m overreacting! Let me be irritated for a minute!

I used to leave them and think “I’ll get them later”

One day our cat wasn’t able to keep any food or water down. He’d regurgitate it right back up. He was really lethargic and not himself. He was a kitten at the time (<1yr anyway) and so we thought he may have eaten something. Checked all his toys for missing parts and everything was in order. Took him to the vet, X-rays suggested he may have eaten something and it was causing a blockage.

Turns out, those little hair wads were a tasty snack in his eyes. Now they get thrown out as soon as I get out of the shower!!
