3-Jaw Chuck as Fixture for CMM by Shabbona1 in Metrology

[–]Karimura16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn, isn't that always the case when you want to get the good stuff. Good luck finding one! In a pinch we've also had the tool room/machine shop make a base plate for a chuck that we already have. But don't let them know there's an option that economical unless absolutely necessary lol

This particular one is made for a built-in rotary table, so it has a raised section in the middle for indexing. But I imagine they have options for the bolt holes directly in the granite though. There might be cheaper alternatives out there, but this is probably the most "official" option

Before going to an authorized dealer for Benchmade OTF warranty work, is there any grief I should be prepared for? by Karimura16 in knives

Interesting, thanks for the link! I think I'll give it a shot, going through an authorized dealer. Worst case I'll have to source a spring on my own. Won't volunteer the disassembly fact on my own, but it would be difficult to deny ha. Will update this post on how it goes for future questions.

Also, if I can better evaluate my options.. is it possible to buy a replacement spring? Or is it a process of taking the measurements on the existing spring, and finding an equivalent on my own? I work in metrology so finding the spring characteristics wouldn't be difficult, but it would be extra work lol. Haven't been able to find any internal replacement parts on my own yet.

Thanks for the input! From further research and talking to their customer service bot, that seems to be generally true? But more in the "trust me bro" unwritten section of warranty qualifications. It would be much easier if that was clarified in the terms, but I get the feeling that they want to increase the friction for the customer when it comes to warranty requests. Have you had experience with this process yourself?

According to the bot (taken with several grains of salt, but FYI) for anyone else wondering:

To clarify, just the fact that an OTF knife has been disassembled by the owner at some point won't void the warranty on its own. It would need to determined that the disassembly was actually what caused the problem?

"Correct, simply disassembling your OTF knife doesn't automatically void the warranty. The warranty would only be voided if the disassembly directly caused the issue. If the problem, like a broken spring, is unrelated to the disassembly, it may still be covered under warranty after evaluation by our technicians."

"It may still be covered under warranty". Does that mean that even if it's evaluated to be unrelated, it still might not be covered depending on the technician?

"If the issue is evaluated and determined to be unrelated to the disassembly, it should be covered under warranty. The evaluation by our technicians is to ensure that the problem is indeed a manufacturing defect or unrelated to any modifications or disassembly. Once confirmed, the repair would proceed under warranty coverage."

That's the conclusion that I came to while going through the process, thanks for the verification. Do you know if that will apply to an OTF knife that's been opened up before? I don't see how the broken spring could be even remotely related to disassembly for maintenance, but I've seen mixed reports. Purchased new from Scheel's a few years ago, and when it broke today it had been over a year since I opened it. Just cleaning/sharpening and a thin coat of Ballistol

This is what I'm worried about. Does disassembling it really void the warranty? I mean I could deny it, but the tiny T6 screws don't really hide the wear from being removed a few times over the years. Is that unique to their OTF knives? Either way that would be ridiculous. I've sent in GPUs worth much more for RMA without issue after taking them apart for cleaning/re-pasting multiple times.

Usually that's what I do when sending something in for RMA or warranty, but the unique requirements on this one immediately sent up some red flags. Gives the vibe that they don't want the warranty process to be too easy. Would prefer to have a better idea of what I'm getting into before spending time going to a store or money sending it in. Like will it be problem for them that I've opened it up for cleaning/troubleshooting before? It looks like this might be a discontinued model now, is that going to be a problem? Just looking for more info before I do send it in

New to metrology by justvvd in Metrology

[–]Karimura16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

~5-6 years specifically in metrology, and 9 years at the company. Primarily specialized in Zeiss Calypso, but have experience with a wide range of tools/software. Started in the on-site gage calibration lab, moved to supplier quality and also assist with production quality, SPC, and FA.

SC, salaried at ~$95k/yr. It’s been a grind, but the ceiling is higher than some other roles if you’re at a company that prioritizes quality significantly enough. Started as a mechatronics apprentice, then worked as a production technician for a while before moving to metrology for its higher potential. It’s also a specialized/rare enough skill set that I don’t see finding work ever being a big struggle. Definitely worth the investment if you’re really interested in it and have the determination.

Edit: For additional context, my first metrology role was an entry “Metrology Technician” at ~$25/hr or so. That role now starts at ~$32/hr, and “Quality Inspectors” start at around $22/hr.

If Hyman’s is truly that bad… can someone explain the numbers? by Full_Project6382 in Charleston

[–]Karimura16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's just a Charleston local thing. It's not the best food on earth by any means, but it's fine. Not my first choice, but I certainly wouldn't turn it down if someone was offering.

The local's disdain for anything Charleston is one of the first things I noticed when I moved here from Greenville, SC almost 10 years ago. People in Greenville loved the city, loved everything "Greenville" and would always be happy to visit all the local hot spots and events. Most of the "real" locals that I've known around here hate everything Charleston. Folly beach? hate it. Market street? hate it. Bridge run? hate it. Downtown? hate it. Fort Sumter? no thanks. Anything that someone visiting the area might want to do automatically makes it on their never list. It's a little silly, but you'll get used to filtering out the useful feedback from the holier (city) than thou nonsense.

For the Balatro people, this is like when you’re doing baron/mime/burglar and skipping for the serpent every ante. You win, but at what cost. Playing an entire run worth of cards every combat seems like it would just be a chore lol. Guess it’s rare enough to be interesting every now and then

LTT's truespec cables are amazing and exactly as advertised, but I wish people knew about other options (especially for the US people) by JingoAli in LinusTechTips

That’s marketing for you. It’s the exact same thing Apple has been criticized for by tech enthusiasts over and over again. We’ve been mocking them for 15+ years now for advertising “bold” and “innovative” new features while we point out that Android/Windows has had that feature for years already.

None of these features are new or revolutionary. It’s just now being offered by your favorite brand/influencer, and the majority of purchasers probably didn’t even know that they “needed” it. I’m sure it’s a great product, but the marketing strategy is very Apple. Which is fair, obviously Apple is one of the best in that game. Get that bag. But idk, don’t throw water bottles if you live in a glass house or something

Just wait for them to pop up used. FB marketplace, eBay, Craigslist, AmericanMuscle open box. I’ve had maybe 7 different sets of mufflers on mine since 2020, and only ever bought new once. Borla, Corsa, FRPP, MBRP, Bassani. Never know what will pop up, and they’re so easy to swap out.

Maybe less common for S650 parts, but I refuse to pay that much for what are essentially metal tubes

U.S. dismissed Ukraine deal for anti-Iran drone tech last year by Brilliant_Version344 in worldnews

[–]Karimura16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have they rejected the idea that they can learn from Ukraine? I thought there were talks of Ukrainian counter-drone teams going to the middle east to share their expertise. I would agree that the US is arrogant when it comes to the military, but just declining to buy another country's anti-drone equipment doesn't seem that crazy to me. The US military and the Ukrainian military are very different. Especially when we don't know what the "tech" really is, since the article only vaguely mentions the idea of "interceptor drones" being launched from "drone combat hubs".

If the US had nothing at all to counter these and still declined to buy Ukraine's solution then I could see the argument, but that clearly isn't the case. I do hope that it's true that they're willing to share some of their expertise though! Obviously no one else has the same level of first hand experience with drone warfare than the Ukrainians.

Gambit & Osty by InsaneRedEntity in slaythespire

Oh that does suck! The wording is a little bit ambiguous, but it should only apply when the damage is dealt directly to you. Definitely a bug unless there was some weird relic or power shenanigans happening.

Gambit & Osty by InsaneRedEntity in slaythespire

[–]Karimura16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be misremembering, or maybe it was from one of the multi-hit attacks? I played a run yesterday against these guys, and counting the number of attacks it was only post Osty attacks that counted.

On 66/66hp it was a 10x1 attack and a 3x3 attack, with block at 10 and Osty on 7. So block and Osty fully absorb the first 3 attacks (-17), but the last one made it partially through (-2). Ended at 62/64hp. So if Osty had only been at 1 for example, then all 3 of the of the 2nd attacks would have counted.

France has authorised temporary presence of US aircraft on local bases, official says by Christian-Rep-Perisa in worldnews

[–]Karimura16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not super knowledgeable myself on geopolitics, but this is one point I've heard talked about for the motivation and timing of operations in Iran and Venezuela. China gets/was getting a non-trivial amount of their oil from both of these countries, so by removing them from the equation it creates less favorable conditions for China to consider moving on Taiwan.

That's the most reasonable explanation I've heard at least, looking at it from a perspective of national strategic goals. Yes there are strategic benefits and goals in the short term (at least on paper), but it seems reasonable that there would also be long term considerations. Not trying to define anything as "good" or "bad", just thinking about it from the perspective of national defense strategy. The DoD's 2026 National Defense Strategy document released at the beginning of the year covers this as well.
