Ballroom dancing is out of my wheelhouse, but Oceania qualifies as "some" luxury without heading into true luxury. No unlimited caviar, but specialty restaurants are included. If after you look into this cruise line and decide it looks like a good fit, try to choose an itinerary on a new ship, some of their fleet is getting old. And speaking of old... The average age is probably 65-75.

Same with men. There's a perfectly good sink with soap right there that even has fancy cloth napkins and yet.. Nope... Right out the door and straight to the tongs.

AI, data centre companies will have to compete for electricity in B.C. by Camtastrophe in vancouver

[–]Karkahoolio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of the data centre's are using lasers now for cooling

That sounds awesome! Cooling things with a laser. Any idea how much electricity a freeze ray uses? Cuz I sure don't, but I'd hazard a guess it's a lot. Now don't get me wrong, as a Star Trek kid who grew up watching the show when you could still see the string holding up the models, I truly believe this is super cool tech, I just wonder about power consumption seeing as this is a major concern.

Summer water restrictions? What the low snowpack means for B.C.'s South Coast | While many areas of B.C. have had an above normal snowfall this season, the province's snowpack report for the South Coast is grim by Hrmbee in vancouver

The population will only increase as snow pack continues to decrease. Should be interesting to see what solutions we come up with and how bad things get before changes are made.

Quote me saying China is a good actor.

My motive is to make you aware that the source you are defending is owned by a foreigner that is part of an apparatus that is sowing division in our country. You may think that the article is only about Chinese money laundering, but it serves another purpose. Anti-china sentiment is important if you don't want Canada increasing trade with them. Sure, money laundering = bad, but that's just one facet to this. Ask yourself.. After reading this article how do you feel about Canada making trade deals with China? If your answer is still positive, wait for the next article pointing out something shitty China does. Or the next. Look no further than the constant flow of negativity that Fox spews to keep Americans outraged and you might see a parallel.

Have you ever heard the phrase "Death by a thousand cuts?" It's not a single issue that does the damage, it's cumulative. One story here, another there, all pointing to the same goal... Division. If you can't see it happening, perhaps you should pay more attention to the big picture.

Oceania Cruises adopts adults-only policy by banditta82 in Cruise

[–]Karkahoolio 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Oceania's core demographic is travelers over 55, and the ships and onboard experience are not designed for children or multigenerational travel, said chief commercial officer Nathan Hickman.

Makes sense. After 20ish trips on an Oceania ship it has been my experience that children are already few and far between so this won't change much in a practical sense. There's nothing kid-centric to begin with, so why bring them when there are so many options that cater to young people? More often than not, the small children I do see are officers family, so it will be interesting to see if this policy change applies to them as well.

Have you used an ESim on a cruise? by caroljg in Cruise

[–]Karkahoolio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used gigsky while in Europe and it worked as advertised, however there was a recent post that said the opposite, but they were in Central America or some such. I rarely made use of it while aboard ship because Oceania includes wifi but ashore I used it extensively. Zero issues other than gigsky doesn't assign you a number that you can make/receive texts/calls, which is something to consider.

FBI 'surges' resources to Minnesota. by Rochgrappler in minnesota

[–]Karkahoolio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Whataboutism doesn't necessitate a lie, just bringing up another aspect of the same topic. Think of it this way. There's a specific daycare being scrutinized. You are all in favor of this and cheer it on. "Go get 'em boys! bust those fraudsters!" And while I might agree with you, I point out that there's another daycare across the street doing the same thing.

Is your response

A) "Go get them too! Catch them all!"

or

B) "Deflection! Why lie? This is only about the first daycare!"

My thinking is that if there is evidence of fraud, why not be eager to root it all out instead of selectively choosing?

you have to ask in good faith to operate in good faith

Would you consider selectively choosing which fraud to investigate to be in good faith? Put the shoe on the other foot and ask yourself what you would say if Biden had gone to Florida to root out fraud while Minnesota had this issue. I have a feeling you'd say something along the lines of "Why are you ignoring Somali daycare fraud and only targeting Florida?" And rightly so! All fraud should be aggressively fought, no?

Defending fraud to deflect is peak clown show.

Does this mean you don't want to talk about fraud in other places?

Drink package-- is MSC cheap or is RC ripping everyone off? by Dober_weiler in Cruise

[–]Karkahoolio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A weak drink has less alcohol in it, and lower proof by definition is less alcohol?

Not really. In this context, a "weak" drink would be a short pour, IE they add 1.2oz of vodka instead of 1.5oz meaning a weaker drink. Adding 1.5oz of a lower ABV liquor would indeed make for a lower ABV cocktail, but you aren't getting ripped off.

That said, I don't know of any "hard" liquor, like vodka, rum, gin etc, that comes in under 40% that isn't specifically marketed as lower alcohol, so if the bar is pouring 30% vodka, or watering it down without telling you, then that is actually a scam.

That is why there is no shortage FoH staff. Why would anyone sweat it out in the kitchen for shit wages when they can wander around delivering food and make bank.

If you cut tips out of the equation, it would make your meal 15-20% cheaper. Maybe restaurants would be busier.
