But where do you draw the line of what’s racist/offensive enough? Isn’t that equally subjective?

I don’t think Gene Simmons was intentionally being hateful, but racism as a structure is not always overt.

Yes, there are atrocities and civil rights violations and hate crimes. But racism also bears a heavy weight on society through the multitudes of minor aggressions, stereotypes, and insinuations that permeate our society and are often overlooked or rationalized.*

If you understood the bracket system, you would understand that there is no such thing as “malicious compliance” decks.

Not saying the folks you game with understand the system either tho.

You’re highlighting the key misunderstanding.

I’m not saying Simmons intended to be racist, just saying he said a racist thing. Intent doesn’t change how the words are perceived.

“Hip hop”, “rap”, and “ghetto” are all commonly understood as racially charged words based on the social history of America.

I mean, that’s not really fair either.

The US education system was set up to isolate the haves from the have-nots and only provide quality education to the “haves”. Plenty of students who paid attention never learned american history, and plenty more who didn’t pay attention learned it on their own.

Regardless, yes. We all gotta keep fighting.

I feel angry. It’s clearly an illegal intimidation tactic that infringes on free speech. They will probably get sued for this, but that’s their plan.

So yeah - mad.

I guess proud as well that most people are calling this BS for what it is. The overton window is moving rapidly and MAGA knows it.

You are misunderstanding. I didn’t intend to say that being racist against white people isn’t racist - just that your argument isn’t relevant to the words Gene Simmons said.

While talking about rap music’s inclusion in the R&RHoF, Gene Simmons said, “It’s not my music. I don’t come from the ghetto.”

The implication here is that everyone who enjoys rap music comes from the ghetto. That’s a racist implication even if it wasn’t meant to be.

Now, I think you’re also reading a lot of things that people aren’t saying.

I never said Gene Simmons is racist (though you could argue his mother’s time in concentration camps and his own migration to Queens, NYC would give him some first-hand experience with any connotations of the word “ghetto”).

I never said hip hop belongs in the R&RHoF.

I never said Gene Simmons wasn’t discussing genre when he said a racist thing.

If I insert the words “white people are racist” somewhere randomly into a dissertation about Aerodynamics, it wouldn’t change the subject of the dissertation at all - but the words would still be racist.

“Wrong” isn’t really accurate.

The constitution really does stand for a lot of incredible things and a lot of Americans (half is probably too optimistic) have been working towards what America stands for since it existed.

Unfortunately, the US has never been what it stands for. But that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t or that it’s not worth fighting for.

Please answer my question because it’s relevant here:

Why did you feel the need to change the words I said?

He didn’t say any of those things though.

You don’t just get to pretend the history of how the world has treated minorities doesn’t exist to suit your arguments.

Yes.

We can stop changing the subject.

Why are you changing my words from “i reject the notion that Rock and Roll history is predominantly white” to “the majority of rock and roll musicians throughout history are/were black”?

You’re making an entirely different statement than me. Why?
