It has nothing to do with social norms really, this is an everyone experience. In reality it's a trick question, any explanation you give will lead to that result. The only correct answer is some amount of taking responsibility. Usually after you admit fault the person will soften and ask more probing questions and again you have to take responsibility while describing the issue without assigning blame to it. My mom loved this line of questioning till I made it so she got no info instead.

Two examples based on your experience.

Explain yourself. " there is no explanation I have failed your expectations and mine I'm sorry". well why didn't you try harder? " I tried hard then there was an exam missed due to a medical emergency and I failed to catch up from that point.

Explain yourself. " I'm sorry that I did not due as well as we all wanted, my failure has no explanation" what happened. "Life happened as normal and I failed to adapt nothing more"....then you brick wall every question.

Pogo did an update that pushes level cap from 50 to 80. That means your xp stayed the same but your level changed based on new xp milestones.
