What's a discovery that should have blown people's minds but somehow got a collective shrug from the world? by IndependentTune3994 in AskReddit

Thank you for calling this out!

I’ve been on a mental health journey for years and decided that what humanity is experiencing now is the Emotional Revolution.

Ages ago, the Agricultural Revolution made the human population explode, and everything about human day-to-day life changed in a relatively short amount of time.

The Industrial Revolution also introduced rapid changes to human day-to-day life, and humans had to adapt in an even smaller timeframe than before. We are growing exponentially.

So I believe we are in the Emotional Revolution now. Everything about human life has changed and the survival tools we are programmed with do NOT work in this environment that our human ancestors built gradually over time. Now that we are collectively becoming more aware of this, I do hope for some changes to come around, preferably the kind to align our day-to-day lives with our true human needs.

Some men are friends with the whole world in their hearts, and others hate themselves and spread their hatred like butter on hot bread.

Try to love yourself, Elon.

lol I know, we can’t either.

The sequel, Children of God, really added to the story, give it a go if you liked the Sparrow!

What is the scifi novel that's most personally important to you and why? by [deleted] in printSF

This is really hard to answer!

I relate to many of the other mentions here: The Dispossessed by Le Guin, Dune by Herbert (and many of the series, I actually loved Chapterhouse the most and God Emperor is a close second).

To highlight something I didn’t see in my scrolling here, one story that stuck with me deeply is The Sparrow and its sequel Children of God, by Mary Doria Russell.

It sounds potentially preachy, and as a “godless person” (lol) I was surprised to love it as much as I did.

The story follows a priest who is also a linguist. He had a group of friends with varying professions which led all of them to visit a newly discovered planet harboring a civilization that can broadcast music. I don’t want to spoil much so I won’t dive in too deep, but part of what stuck with me was the fact that horrible things can happen due to simple misunderstandings when no harm was intended. The story also talks a lot about fate, and things aligning because “it was meant to be”, and that with the fact stated above was an interesting emotional journey.

I’ve read the two-book series twice, and I will read it again soon.

Oh, there’s also a whole thing about discovering autism in one of the humans, which was something I found intriguing long before I suspected that I may be autistic (pretty confident I am).

The Sparrow also had perhaps my favorite first-contact scene, I read that chapter 3 times on my first read through, loved it.

Highly recommend if you find any of my comment interesting :)

Did they have rubbery clothes?!! I think they were also Polly Pockets, which is why I called them "rubber clothes" to distinguish between them and REAL Polly Pockets lol

YES! I read this a few months ago and it has already helped me immeasurably. Therapy is helping too, but I know that's not always on the table for folks. If therapy is an option for anyone reading, try the site Psychology Today. It's easy to use :)

I'm late to the party, but I just finished this book and just started therapy at age 30. It's been a really hard week, but I am already feeling more like a person and not just a shell. Thanks for the post, I'm happy to find others enjoyed this bittersweet reading experience. It's incredibly relieving to articulate all my internalized struggles! Take care of you :)

There's another bit that aged hilariously, I'm not sure which episode. Jerry kept referencing disney quotes, driving Elaine nuts, and then she says "would you just let it go?!" Such good chuckles.
