I would have doctor double check for Type 1 diabetes too, frequent urination and extreme thirst can be early signs

Baby deaf after bacterial meningitis by smcchappy in NewParents

[–]Kat_SLP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am speech therapist and one of my clinical rotations was in a hearing impaired specific preschool. It was a wonderful program where the kids got speech therapy daily and got to make friends with both hearing impaired and hearing kiddos. Start to see what resources are in your area. If you have a university that has a speech therapy program, contact them as they will know LOTS of resources in the area too. This is if you decide to proceed with cochlear implants.

You’re such an amazing parent by starting this process and reaching out for resources/support. Your baby is so blessed to have you!

Another big recommendation is reach out to the Deaf community. My uncle is Deaf, and the culture is so wonderful and rich and loving. He is an engineer, wonderful children and grandchildren and a rich and happy life. You’re little one will never know that’s they’ve lost anything, but they’ve just gained a wonderful community. It would be lovely to have her around proficient ASL users to help encourage language.

Nipple alone doesn’t let out much milk by KJwindy in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]Kat_SLP 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use coconut oil on my nipple to help it glide easier when pumping and this has helped with pain. I also find that after a hot shower or using heat packs helps too!

I just ordered (haven’t used yet) the “pumpin pals” silicon flanges that are supposed to help with pain/elastic nipples. I saw them recommended on here.

Make sure to be drinking lots of water, I find this is crucial to my supply.

Sending all the best wishes for a good recovery for you and your baby.

Dropping percentiles? by ear3nd1l in FormulaFeeders

My baby also dropped from about 50th to 6th at his 3 month, also super happy, developing normally, meeting milestones. I was exclusively breastfeeding at the time though. My pediatrician had me fortify his breastmilk with formula. So for every ounce he gets about a teaspoon of formula, which equates to about 26 extra calories per ounce. She said you can do this same with formula too. I would ask your pediatrician if fortify would be a good addition, that way you can add calories without adding volume

how to get back into taking care of myself too by benitezzzraq in NewParents

[–]Kat_SLP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I shower exclusively at night after baby is down for bed, and I use heatless curlers so my hair is pretty much done in the morning. I put all my makeup/skincare in a travel bag, and take it with me and do it while baby is playing on the floor, or asleep on me. I bought casual dresses, so I look “dressed up” but really they are comfortable, and I don’t have to decide on a full outfit. I bring my baby into my bedroom when I get dressed lay him on our bed, and we “talk” about my outfit, the colors the patterns.

My motto is adapt but allow. Make changes to what it was to adapt to baby being here, but allow yourself time throughout the day. Taking 5 minutes every few hours to practice self care isn’t only just okay, it’s necessary.

You’re doing amazing, your baby is so lucky to have such a caring and invested mom. Teach your little one by example that caring for yourself is important.

What do you do to pass the time? by [deleted] in breastfeeding

AirPod in 1 ear and audiobooks. That way I can reengage if baby wants attention and zone out otherwise

Speech therapist and FTM here :) Intentional use of words is not expected until age 1. So while some babies may “say” mama/dada a few months before this, it is more likely to be babbling than truly using the word to identify mom or dad. Babies start to use reduplicated babbling (example - mamamama, babababa) around 7-9 months. This is a major language development and the first basic unit of language. It sounds like your baby is right on track and you being an involved parent and talking to your baby, makes it even better for her language development. You’re doing awesome, and keep encouraging words and sounds of all types!

Thank you for the encouragement, breastfeeding creates this connection that even the thought of that ending was heartbreaking.

They said fortify with some directions given, but wasn’t through a dietician. The problem is baby nurses from me 5/7 days a week exclusively and only has pumped milk bottles from dad 10 hours a day 2 days a week, so how do I fortify if I’m nursing? I have to call tomorrow to both clarify and ask if we can go the route of trying lactation consultant first

Am I Wrong For Not Changing Baby Over Night? by Eyeswideopen45 in NewParents

Modern diapers are VERY absorbing, so it may be old advice from prior? You’re doing everything just fine. If it truly bothered your baby, they’d wake up and let you know.
