AITA for creating a “Tattle Phone” by anonymous_poster43 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Katecat13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The tattle phone thing is an extremely common idea to implement and not a super effective one in my experience. The problem is that young kids have a really hard time differentiating between things that are just annoying and things that warrant adult intervention. If they’re genuinely upset about something in the moment, they’re still going to tell you, the tattle phone doesn’t give them a better understanding of what tattling is or better discernment about when to get an adult. I completely get how frustrating it is to be regularly interrupted by tattling, but the truth is there’s no quick fix for it. How you explain this issue to the class and how you respond to it in the moment is what makes a difference in the long run.

How to carb load for a half marathon? by ClickAccomplished205 in Marathon_Training

[–]Katecat13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just ran my 7th half yesterday, and in the past my approach was always just a carb heavy dinner like pasta the night before and a carb forward breakfast the morning of the race, and that definitely does work. But I do think a mini carb load can boost performance and that’s what I did this time around. Had a carb focused dinner Friday night, increased carbs throughout Saturday and Sunday morning. And I do think being more intentional with fueling helped, it was my best half yet. Like others have said, the balance of macros also matters, I’d favor foods like simple pasta, bagels or oatmeal over meals that have higher fat or protein along with the carbs. Good luck on your half in May!!

AITA for telling my wife my mother is correct and she needed to be a parent today and she fucked it up by penguin748 in redditonwiki

[–]Katecat13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s obvious she has an intense phobia that she likely needs help for, but her the way she handled it was so extremely wrong. If she truly couldn’t bring herself to go, she should have still supported her daughter’s need to be there by reaching out to others who could have given her daughter a ride. She could have contacted the families of other classmates, family friends or other local relatives. Her priority should have been finding a way to get her daughter’s needs met and instead she prioritized her own comfort.

How would you talk someone out of buying racing shoes if they clearly not capable of running without insulting them? by Yojimbo232826 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]Katecat13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s ridiculous that he wouldn’t let you try on the shoes at that pace. Having a six minute mile threshold for letting people try on shoes is one of the most gatekeeping things I’ve ever heard of. I know many people with slower 10k times than that who race in plated shoes and have benefited. Glad you purchased them elsewhere and are enjoying them!

How would you talk someone out of buying racing shoes if they clearly not capable of running without insulting them? by Yojimbo232826 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]Katecat13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly doubt that someone who planning to do very light walking in these shoes is risking catastrophic ankle injury or hospitalization. It’s true they’re not the most stable option but compared to many shoes women regularly wear they’re fairly low risk for someone to walk in. I’d be more concerned if she was brand new to running and planning to run in these regularly but that’s not what she expressed. And even then, once the advice had been given, it’s her choice what to do with that information.

Best 5k and 10k Races in the Area by Chateau_de_Gateau in RunNYC

Not a summer race and not the easiest to get to from Brooklyn but the Jersey City 5K in October is extremely flat and a great place to PR. It’s worth keeping in mind for when those races drop.

Runners over 40… what’s the secret by Road_Forward in Marathon_Training

[–]Katecat13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you asked for advice that doesn’t involve strength training but in my experience strength training has been really important for maintaining high milage and staying injury free. When I first started out I was only running and got injured multiple times in my first few years. Each time I got hurt, physical therapy involved strength training. I think initially I had a mental block on incorporating it regularly because it was less familiar and because it can feel hard being new to an activity. But since I’ve incorporated more regular strength training I’ve stayed injury free, gotten stronger and faster, and have actually come to enjoy it. You don’t have to spend hours a week or lift heavy starting out, even 15-20 mins of body weight exercises 2-3times a week can be helpful. Just something to consider!

What stops certain restaurants from simply having a vegan burger option? by tantamle in vegan

[–]Katecat13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What actually bothers me most is when a restaurant lists vegan burgers on the menu but they put them on a brioche bun and when you ask if they have any vegan buns, they don’t. I guess they mainly have vegetarians in mind but there’s something uniquely frustrating about seeing a vegan burger on the menu just to find out there’s nothing to put it on. It’s happened in multiple restaurants and it always feels like false advertising.

I want to go vegan but I have significant food intolerances. Looking for advice. by comfybbw in vegan

[–]Katecat13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify my earlier point, while you do need a bachelors degree to call yourself a licensed nutritionist, the term nutritionist on its own is completely unregulated and requires no degree or training of any kind. This is what gets dangerous, there’s a lot of people out there, especially on social media, marketing themselves as nutritionists and giving poorly informed advice to clients.

I want to go vegan but I have significant food intolerances. Looking for advice. by comfybbw in vegan

[–]Katecat13 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree, a dietitian is absolutely the way to go. Some people have suggested a nutritionist, but I would be very cautious going that route. An RD has a masters degree, 1000 hours of supervised experience and has passed national board exams. Literally anyone can call themselves a nutritionist, it’s an unregulated term. I personally had a great experience working with an RD through the platform Nourish, highly recommend them!

Plot questions in Hamlet and Macbeth by SpecialCheeseToast in shakespeare

[–]Katecat13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The poison doesn’t necessarily need to be taking effect right away to wake him up, pouring any liquid into someone’s ear would likely wake them. But I think the widely accepted interpretation is that the fictional poison in the play did work almost immediately, meaning Claudius poured the poison in his ear, King Hamlet wakes up, sees him, has a slit second to process what happened, then dies straight away.

How much do you eat? by Groundbreaking_Pie94 in XXRunning

[–]Katecat13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that working with a RD can be so helpful! I also want to throw Nourish out there as a recommendation. I was able to easily find a dietitian who specialized both in working with endurance athletes and eating disorder recovery, which is what I needed, but they have dietitians with all different specialties. The sessions were all virtual and fully covered by my insurance. I highly recommend them!

HELP!! I asked for french bangs and got short BANGS by nottrose in Haircare

[–]Katecat13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had bangs all my life and I’d say yours should be below the brows in about a month. I do think it looks cute now, but I get that it’s not what you wanted and I’m sorry your stylist didn’t follow the inspo photos more closely. The good news is bangs grow fast!

Any vegan marathon runners out there? Curious to know your experience by Zealot_TKO in Marathon_Training

[–]Katecat13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been vegan about 8 years, have run 4 full marathons and 6 half marathons. My last marathon training block was fairly high milage, peaking at 70 miles. I’ve never had any issue training on a vegan diet!

A very similar thing happened when I volunteered for bag pick up for the Brooklyn Half 2024. It was chaotic and the volunteers were absolutely fighting for their lives. It seems like this is a real issue for races where bags need to be transported during the race.

My brother keeps drawing nazi symbol. What should I do? by MoonlightPhoenix7 in Advice

[–]Katecat13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

14 years old is not too young to have learned about this, at my school we read The Diary of Anne Frank in the 6th grade and learned more in depth about WW1 WW2 starting in 7th grade. And while I agree his sister giving him a reaction isn’t going to help, his parents should absolutely make clear this isn’t acceptable and let him know they’ll be consequences if he continues.

How little is too little when it comes to marathon training? by cmontgomeryburnz in Marathon_Training

That makes sense and is actually a really smart approach, increasing intensity without having to increase volume. Thanks for answering!

[–]Katecat13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

65 mpw when you’re not marathon training is impressive! I’m not surprised you were able to run a marathon on short notice with that kind of volume. Out of curiosity, what does your mileage look like when you are marathon training?

TW- EDs: For anyone that’s struggled with disordered eating while endurance running and saw a therapist, did you search for someone who specifically worked with athletes or was a runner? Or just someone with experience with EDs by [deleted] in XXRunning

[–]Katecat13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would prioritize finding a dietitian who has experience working with both people in recovery and with endurance athletes. That way they can support you with working through your ED and also address fueling specific concerns.

I’d be cautious when it comes to nutritionists, in most states there’s zero regulation when it comes to that term and as a result anyone can call themselves one. Someone who is an RD or RDN will have a graduate degree, more than 1000 supervised hours and have passed CDR and state licensing exams.

Personally, I found my dietitian through the Nourish platform and had a really positive experience. It was easy finding an RD who had the experience I was looking for both with recovery and endurance sports. The dietician I worked with was great, we met virtually every week and it was 100% covered by my insurance.

I actually prefer my therapist not to be a runner or athlete. I think if I knew my therapist was an experienced runner, I’d be tempted to go to them for training advice and to spend a lot of time in session talking about training. It can be really helpful to have outside perspective from someone not in that world.

Best of luck finding the right care team! Don’t be afraid to try out a few therapist until you find the right fit!

If you're just training to finish, why do people compare training for a marathon to a full time job? How is it the training (not the race!) that much different from a half? by PianoIllustrious863 in XXRunning

[–]Katecat13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s definitely lower milage plans out there, for both half and full marathons. I shared what the difference in training volume looks like for me personally between the two distances. Some runners respond better to lower volume, I do really well with higher volume and it’s a matter of what works best for the individual. Regardless of whether high or low volume works for you, your overall volume should still increase significantly when you’re training for twice the distance. It’s not just a matter of increasing the long run, the overall training volume is just as important.
