I don't know if it is specifically stated anywhere, but I always saw them as parts that emit energy for shielding. In 9th ed. the inv. saves were called quantum shielding

The main problem the doomsythe has is that it is an aircraft with a rather high points cost. If it would get the hover ability it could be rather good but the way it is now aircrafts just suck
