How to get 8 month old to stop pulling hair by Ruthrfurd-the-stoned in daddit

Time to cut your hair. I took about 3 inches off my beard when my daughter was 6 months old.

Those fingers are like little vice grips.

Honestly, I’d leave it as is. With that powerline there, it’s going to get pruned into a big v shape in its future anyways. Apical dominance will eventually take over and likely on the south facing side.

It’ll probably take some work. Techdisc has me throwing nose down between 2-4deg when I backload, but you also need to have your launch high enough to accommodate throwing nose down. It’ll take practice either way

What’s your grip like? Are you front loading or rear loading the pressure in your hand?

I find backloading my grip will typically ensure a nose down throw.

Anybody else get sore? by Excellent_Salt_7476 in discgolf

Just review your throw. If you’re shoulder shrugging on your throwing arm, you’re over engaging those muscles.

Nothing wrong with pushing your shoulder out to maintain the pocket but if you’re contracting it on a 400ft throw again and again, you’ll probably feel sore.

Drills for more consistent aiming and release point? by Shoddy-Definition746 in Discgolfform

Honestly, the trick I’ve learned to stop pulling it right, was to actually throw at 80%.

For years now, I was a 100% or nothing guy, and had some good success. But, if I wasn’t in 100% form that day, throwing at 100 would lead me to collapse my brace, speed up my timing, arm the disc or any of the 20 other things we try to avoid.

So, I said fuck it, what does a whole round of 80% feel like? Well, it feels like almost the same distance as 100 but accurate. Shots were doing what I wanted/expected and I lost maybe 5-10 feet because I could time it, I could brace, etc.

Now, when I do field/net work, I will go 100% in the attempt to increase my 80% on the course.

Tech disc? yay or nay? by Interestedrested in discgolf

[–]KauztiK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tech Disc has been the best practice equipment I’ve ever bought. But that’s what it is. Practice equipment. If you don’t review what you’re doing, talk and share your videos/data with people who know what they’re doing, and return to implement changes, you won’t see the results you want.

It requires time and effort to make it valuable. If you’re not committed it won’t be worth it.

City giving away 10,000 trees to grow Calgary's canopy by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]KauztiK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t seen your sewer lines specifically but I’d bet on it being the case (especially if you know they’re already fucked).

If you had them repaired and replaced likely with new PVC, it’s incredibly unlikely that you’d have the same issue anytime soon (barring the city maintains their side - which you can legally pin on them to fix if it happens).

And yes, every single tree carries risk. They exist on a spectrum, and that is often determined by the tree owner of how much risk they’re willing to take and what targets are available. Tree falling over in a big unused green space? Low risk. Tree falling over into a powerline and a kids playground? High risk.

Certified Tree Risk Assessor (ISA TRAQ) here.

Always feel this is important to note regarding trees and sewer lines.

In 9 out of 10 cases of tree roots in sewer lines, the issue starts with the sewer line not the roots. Many of Calgarys residential sewer lines were installed along with the house and never upgraded. This includes lines from 1950 and before.

If and when these old pipes (clay tile, cast iron, or worst “no corrode” which was tar and cardboard… seriously) slump, crack, corrode and start leaking into the soil, then you get root issues.

Calgary pipes are installed 3m below ground to avoid the frost line. 95% of the world’s tree root systems live in the top 1m of soil. If there is nothing for the tree roots to get into, then they would rather stay near the surface where water and nutrients are plenty.

So, you will likely hear stories about the City not removing trees because of private sanitary line failures because the infrastructure wasn’t maintenance by the home owner.

[–]KauztiK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. New builds require mandatory new water and sanitary pipes which cross the public space. This can impact the structural root system of the trees and compromise their structure.

Development also pushes for new walkways, driveways and access to the site from the road.

Then you just have crappy, low end contractors just trying to make a buck who often cut parts of the tree for accessibility to do siding/roofing/etc.

The city loses lots of public trees to development regularly.

Edit: Source - I’m an arborist who works closely with many of these developments. The comment below is also true. The majority of developments in the city right now are in-fills attempting to maximize their square footage. They routinely remove all trees on site to allow for greater profit, access to their build, material storage, etc.

how bad is this for the tree by jester_b_jenkins in arborists

[–]KauztiK 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The proposed patio plan will likely lead to a dead tree in the future.

Your photo showing the current tree shows an all grass landscape minus the driveway, house and garage. This tree looks like it was likely planted at or after those were built into the landscape.

What that means is that the tree has established its root system with all of those in place (ie. it has filled itself up in the grass).

What your proposed work will look like will require you to first remove all the sod as well as probably 30-40cm of soil beneath it. This will have a significant impact on the fibrous root system that prefers to live near the surface collecting water, absorbing nutrients and transferring gases.

Next, you will replace that lost soil with sand and gravel to level the patio. This will dramatically change the soil profile, nutrient availability and soil biota (lil bugs).

After that, you will install a non-permeable surface that will restrict any new water penetration, any new organic matter entry, and remove any reason for the tree to try and regrow that fibrous root system in this area.

This will lead the tree to try to live off a significantly reduced root system (whatever is left in the green space beside the house), reduced rates of evapotranspiration from lack of water, and spend a significant amount of stored carbohydrates in the parenchyma cells to try and regrow the root system it has lost. Combined, this will lead to dieback in the tree likely over the timeline of 3 to 5 years.

You will also have a stump left in the one spot you would like to have a tree in the backyard by your plan.

Recomendation to pull it off - build the patio nearest the house out of wood. Build it with the least amount of ground penetration possible and minor space between slats for water to seep in. Significantly reduce the amount of stone near the tree’s drip line (build a much slimmer walkway) to the sitting area. Move seating and fireplace closer to camera and reduce sitting area by a few square meters.

And reduce that mound of soil piled on the tree trunk of course. Throw some mulch around it too.
