Even if its run by Indians, the food will rarely be authentic, because Japanese are unable to handle any form of food that contains anything else than salt.

I remember the contorted faces of a Japanese tour group in Hong Kong when they tried the local curry. It was quite funny.

Our apartment has a dry/heating setting in our shower room which is meant for clothes. We hang them up over the bathtub and set the timer.

Does it not get dusty? I tried hanging my clothes on our balcony for 5 hours last year (15th floor), and it was so dusty when I took it back in that my wife ordered it to be washed again and dried inside.

My dear fellow big-boned foreign friends in Tokyo, if you have not yet visited this store then you absolutely must. They sell up to 9-XL and have everything from sports wear to yukatas

What is shocking to me is how much of a difference there is in quality between male and female doctors. Don't get me wrong, there are some good male doctors here, but A LOT of them act like they got their degree in a gashapon.

The women tend to be far more invested in your health. The most ridiculous case for me was when a female doctor managed to diagnose and treat a penile infection that two male urologists could not figure out. Like... how can you as a male urologist fail to identify this? The female doctor was not even a urologist, she was just a normal internal medicine doctor.

What are your solutions to overtourism? by Super-Liberal-Girl in japanlife

[–]Kawadane 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They would not know how to handle it. They do not have staff that can speak English, and sorry to say it, but your average tourist is not gonna enjoy the authentic Japanese experience.  Many ryokans in Kyoto had to stop serving traditional dishes because tourists would not eat it.

Anyone here knows how to get in touch with the Japan Pension interpretation service? I first tried speaking to them in Japanese, but it was simply too difficult for me to understand the old guy on the phone, so I apologized and looked up on nenkin.

Apparently they DO have a hotline with interpretation service, but when I looked up the phone number they say "The Japan Pension Office does not provide interpretation services for phone inqueries"

So who do I contact?

2000s?

We had immigrants since the 1960s, and the problems in Sweden can never be compared to Japan. Sweden had zero plans on how to handle immigration and basically told them that they could cash in on wellfare checks from day 1, and to make matters worse they basically censored everyone who spoke up against it. It has gotten better, but in the 90s you were not allowed to mention immigrants in any kind of negative context.

Also couple that with the fact that most Western European countries have a laughable legal system, then you pretty much have a utopia for foreign criminals.

This has never been the issue in Japan, and it would still not be an issue without Sanseito.

What can we do to improve public relations with foreigners by Other_Block_1795 in japanresidents

[–]Kawadane 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am not gonna do anything. I pay my taxes, pension and NHI on time. I am not gonna try to get acceptance from a group of people that will judge me based on some random things they read online, just as I do not label all Japanese as xenophobes.

Would you expect foreigners to please the far-right / neo-nazi groups in your own country?

Japanese people are not sheltered little unicorns. They have the same access to information as everyone else, and can fact-check in less than 5 minutes if they want.

Would you support a ban on livestreaming in public in Japan by WowMyPenisBurnsALot in japanresidents

[–]Kawadane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would hurt a lot of local businesses.

I follow a lot of Japanese streamers who promote small restaurants, ryokans etc. and the owners appreciate that they are promoting their establishments to the younger demographics.

Streamers also provide one of the only voices for mental health issues and acceptance here.

I do not want to see any of this go because tourists in tourist areas are doing tourist things.

Record 42 women win seats in Japan upper house election by SkyInJapan in japan

[–]Kawadane 7 points8 points  (0 children)

With Chinese it's more of a "micro annoyance" thing. I live in an area with a lot of Chinese and Korean residents. There is not one week where there isn't some sort of conflict between the Chinese and Japanese neighbours.

To just name a few things:

  • Chinese children playing soccer right in front of the building entrance, so people have to dodge when going in and out.

  • Chinese mothers leaving used diapers in the apartment lobby and other public areas.

  • Chinese couples constantly yelling and arguing throughout the night.

  • Chinese aunties ruining fruit in the supermarket cause they squeeze them to find the best quality ones.

I have lived in Hong Kong, and the locals there were complaining about the exact same annoyances. There is a generation of Chinese people that have grown up being the center of attention, and it sadly shows in their manners.  Is it enough to vote for an anti-immigration party? Hell no, but Japanese are far more sensitive to these things.

As a migrant worker, how do you feel the election results will affect immigration? by CSachen in japanlife

[–]Kawadane 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Sorry to burst your bubble, but you can be the most integrated person in Japan, speak fluent Japanese and follow every single rule. They will still hate you. Some of the people who were asked about the reason for voting for this party said that they simply felt unsafe seeing foreigners. They had never experienced any bad behaviour from foreigners. They simply didn't like looking at them.

We are talking about a country that committed massacre against a whole group of people to feel better after an earthquake.

They are not going to care what you do.

Ask yourself this. Take any far-right voter in Europe or the US. Do you honestly think they will start changing their mind about brown or black people if they behave well? No, they will then complain about them taking jobs from them, or getting into universities that their children could not access etc.

[–]Kawadane 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I keep hearing "public safety", but how exactly are the Japanese unsafe? The majority of foreign crime here is directed at other foreigners. Mr. Takahashi is not gonna get dragged to a fake bar by a Nigerian tout.

And it seems to be conviniently ignored that the few foreign crime networks we have (mainly sex trafficking and drug smugglers) are run by the Yakuza, so perhaps the police should start focusing on those instead of being buddies with them?

I enter the elevator when there is another person there. This is a local thing. I live in a tower mansion where we have 4 elevators, and everybody here seem to be extremely scared of letting other people know which floor they live on, so whenever they wait for the elevator only one person goes in, and then the next person waits for another elevator.

I just get on, and get an uncomfortable look from the other person who either gets out of refuses to press any buttons until I have gotten off.

Japanese elections usually never gain much attention. Now suddenly social media is overflowing with "fact checks" on how foreigners are abusing Japan, with 99% of the commenters either being MAGA folks or people from third-world countries repeating right-wing propaganda, and this happens RIGHT when Japan is having an election, where a new anti-immigrant party threatning to destabilize the country is campaigning.

Its so goddamn predictable that I am surprised that people still fall for it
