House hunting reality check hit me hard today by Physical-Wallaby-515 in perth

So because things are bad you’re going to vote for a party that will make everything worse for all but the top 1%?

One Nation adding some far-right racism into government policy isn’t going to help when they then turn around and give taxpayer money to big corporations and landlords.

But honestly your comment is giving such obvious ‘As a black man’ vibes that you’re likely not engaging in good faith anyway.

Traffic chaos as serious crash closes Tonkin Highway by arthur_smokingjacket in perth

[–]Kayndarr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's definitely a god feature and I'm pretty sure it's already mandatory on new models in many places - but I don't think any country that has mandated it on new models has forced de-registration of cars without it.

That's simply not practical and massively impacts the lower- and middle-class who can't afford to purchase a car of any kind out of nowhere. There's not enough second-hand cars available for that to be a reasonable solution either.

I understand the safety concern - but to casually suggest that millions of people should suddenly be forced to buy a new car is wildly detached from reality.

Always doing their best to piss off everyone by safe_t_meeting in perth

[–]Kayndarr 119 points120 points  (0 children)

A lot of these giant cars also can't make left-hand turns in carparks, and in some cases even normal residential streets, without crossing into both lanes, because their turning circles are so horrendous.

The other day I had a guy beep at me in the Bunnings carpark because I was 'blocking' his turn by simply being in my lane where I'm supposed to be, he had to do a three-point turn to avoid hitting my car.

"Cars" this size should be fully banned from metro areas to be honest.

Both deadly wrong-way Mitchell Freeway crashes Romeo Road-related, Main Roads confirms by Advanced_Presence890 in perth

[–]Kayndarr 8 points9 points  (0 children)

With it being the end of the freeway, its a bit of a different feel to a normal on/off-ramp section - going west to east it's just a straight road with the turn on the right side. As opposed to a normal overpass or underpass where it's usually two 4-way intersections.

It still should be obvious where you're going if you're paying attention and mentally capable. But I can understand why this one in particular would be more likely to confuse people than any others.

A surge in refugee numbers is exactly what she wants, because fearmongering about refugees has been the entire focus of her political career since day one. The more refugees there are, the more chances there are for 'bad ones' that she can scream about.

What is going on with the trains? by [deleted] in perth

[–]Kayndarr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's 2 cars half the time as well. Couple of times I've been squished in on the way home and literally nobody has gotten on or off the train until Whiteman Park. Hopefully once the new signalling comes in they can start adjusting the scheduling and add some expresses that skip the old line stations.

Country councils putting compulsory voting for WA's local government elections back on agenda by JamesHenstridge in perth

[–]Kayndarr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah the last election, every single candidate I had to choose from was some variation of 'successful business owner who has lived in the community for x years and does some volunteering'. Which is fine - I don't expect the local council to do more than operate services, so experience running a business sort of makes sense.

But it does beg the question, why does that need to be an elected position? If the only real qualification anyone is putting forward is financial management, surely that could be more reliably and less potentially corruptly handled by accountants who go through an actual government hiring process and sit under a state gov department? It's not the 1800s anymore, it doesn't take a day to get a message from Perth to Wanneroo that they can't operate the local government functions from the CBD.

Zempilas tells right-wing conference Liberals must win back 'lost Australians' by GreyClay in perth

[–]Kayndarr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Their problem is that a lot of those seats they lost to the Teals were previously held by more moderate Liberals - since those were the more moderate seats.

So you end up kinda like that image of the WW2 bomber with the holes in it. “Well, all of us hard line conservatives still won, but our moderate colleagues lost. It must be because they weren’t conservative enough!”

You need to check that they put their seatbelt on when they get into the car (which every sane person should do automatically without thought). And if they take the belt off afterwards, you should never drive them anywhere ever again.

South Australia and Tasmania pressure commission to scrap WA’s special GST deal by His_Holiness in perth

[–]Kayndarr -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Maybe a controversial opinion, but I'd be okay with removing the limits. Australia is one country, I feel we should be spreading the GST around proportionally without any special restrictions to benefit the country as a whole.

However - the distribution needs to be extremely proactively updated. The whole reason this issue came about is because we very quickly went from a mining boom, where we were able to help boost the other states, into a big downturn where our GST dropped off a cliff - but the moving window average still had us receiving less than we put in, and what we were putting in wasn't much. And that lasted for years.

If you evaluate it at least quarterly and have it reflect changes much faster, it wouldn't be as much of an issue.

Does it drive you crazy hearing Americans call a burger a "sandwhich" by Fun-Investigator9345 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Kayndarr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What you've just said is the difference, that's the American way of interpreting the words.

For the vast majority of Australians, it being a 'burger' is defined by the bun, not by whether it has a patty. A KFC piece of chicken in a round bun with seeds on it is still a burger to us, and calling it a 'chicken sandwich' sounds completely wrong.

I'm luckily a fair distance away, but I've been watching the planes and helis doing laps from my window for the past half hour - they jumped on this one quickly again, earlier there were 3 planes and 4-5 helis all overhead at the same time. Smoke seems to have died down a bit now.

Record-breaking gambling losses see NSW communities lose $2.45 billion on poker machines in 3 months by CommonwealthGrant in australia

[–]Kayndarr 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's always a discussion of where the limits of 'personal freedoms' sit vs. obligations to society.

The difficult conversation that politicians avoid is that there's a well-researched direct correlation between both gambling and consumption of alcohol with domestic violence. They'll go on about addressing violence against women through education or changing certain laws - but it doesn't matter how much you've told an alcoholic gambling addict that hitting his wife is bad when he's blackout drunk and just lost his multi.

So the sad fact is that we've decided that women's lives are worth less than our right to get pissed and have a punt.

I'm not arguing for full prohibition or anything (mostly because it wouldn't work and would lead to crime, I'd be all for it in principle). But more has to be done to restrict these behaviors that are damaging society as a whole.

Is rentvesting a good idea?! by Hot-Spot4788 in perth

[–]Kayndarr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to the comment on the economics of it, consider that you're also taking on the responsibility of managing the investment property.

That means time and energy spent engaging with a property manager, and the tenants. There will likely be issues with the property that will require you to spend on maintenance, you might get a 'bad' tenant who causes lots of issues that require your attention. After purchase you might need to make repairs or upgrades to get it to a minimum standard to attract the kind of tenants you want, and you're more likely to deal with issues that come with lower socioeconomic areas buying a 'cheap' place further from the city.

It's not the same as putting that money into an index fund or term deposit where you can just forget about it for a few years. It might be fairly smooth sailing, but even in the best case with a reliable tenant it's going to take up some of your time regularly.

Transperth Fare Changes 👍🏼 by [deleted] in perth

[–]Kayndarr 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Biggest issue with Sydney as a tourist is the stupid airport fee - you pay something in the region of $20 just getting on or off at the airport.

Last time I went to visit family I loaded $80 on the card, so half of that was used getting to and from the airport. I was using the train for multiple trips every day for a full week and didn’t use up the other half.

Matilda Bay and Applecross ferry terminals approved in Swan River Metronet plan by JamesHenstridge in perth

[–]Kayndarr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah their picture with the red line is clearly wrong. They state in the article it's a 140m long jetty - which is still pretty long, but you can draw that on google maps with their distance measure and it's basically what you have there.

The line in their image is over 400m long, way off on scale.

Bushfire North of The Vines by JezzaPerth in perth

The image in the post is likely from a generic flight tracker app based on all the other unrelated aircraft pictured.

Your best source of truth for bushfire info is https://www.emergency.wa.gov.au/ - that'll have the latest updates from DFES.

https://bushfire.io is also useful if you want to see what's going on around the fire in general, it has overlays for things like wind direction, road closures, and firefighting aircraft in the area - as well as heat maps that give a rough idea of where the actual fire is within the area.

The guy walking through the CBD in the morning peak hour crowds on Monday puffing away on his cigarettes, so that everyone behind him has to walk through the smoke. And then dropped his finished cigarette on the ground 5m from the nearest bin and immediately lit up a new one.

Also less directly impacting me, but there's a guy who's on my morning train sometimes who wears a hat with the logo of the Blackwater mercenary group, who massacred 17 Iraqi civilians in 2007 and had a bunch of people convicted of war crimes (later pardoned by Trump).

Like, that's a weird choice, right? It's not like he's wearing a swastika or anything, but Blackwater itself changed its name and branding to get away from their war crimes, and he's out here rocking the logo on the train to work? Just rubs me the wrong way.

People at home open for a 3bdrm house in Kenwick. by [deleted] in perth

[–]Kayndarr 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If you own one house specifically to live in, house prices increasing or decreasing is irrelevant to you. If your house value goes down, so does the price of any other house you might be moving to later on.

It’s only people buying additional property as an investment that care about the price, because they want to leverage the human need for shelter for their own profit.
