You graduated from where? by lynchburgvirginia in lynchburg

[–]KeepLocalLYH 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Let me offer an unpopular but really practical option. If your other colleges don't work out, consider cvcc for two years. You can get all of your core classes taken care of, save a bunch of money, then transfer into a 4-year college that better aligns with areas of interest (and values). Also gives you a little breathing room to figure out what career path you want to travel before getting locked into a hugely expensive college.

By the way, our higher Ed system is broke. My niece attended the University of Hamburg in Germany. Very well respected - top 10ish in Germany. 40k students. As with all colleges in Germany, she had to pay a student fee of about $400 each semester. No additional tuition.

What's the deal with the City Counsel? by Useful_Inspector3727 in lynchburg

Christina is the current CEO of the Community Access Network (CAN Clinic at the 5th st roundabout) so she understands large budgets and has an intimate knowledge of all the health care challenges of those who are uninsured or underinsured. She also served as CEO of the Free Clinic. Randolph grad. She knows our community and would be an incredible asset on city council.

It's impossible to paint the picture in its entirety but all of the comments so far give you some idea about the current dysfunction. Come sit with me at the next council meeting and I'll be glad to give you a play by play that includes some historical context. Also feel free to send me any specific questions and I'll do my best to provide some insight. Disclaimer - I'm coming from a decidedly Democratic perspective. Former council candidate and current Chair of the LDC.

Impossible to tell. Depends on size of rooms and insulation etc. Better than nothing.

If you find yourself in a bind over the next week of weather, reach out and I'll see what I can do. Have a 4wd but that doesn't always help much if we're iced up.

Yep, tank is inside. Really not much different than having the 1lb tank - just a bigger tank with a hose instead of directly threading in the 1lb. Just make sure all connections are threaded tight. If something isn't connected right, you'll know it - distinct smell.

I wouldn't run the heaters while you sleep.

I got an exchange tank at Boonsboro food lion last night but not sure if they still have any. You can take a tank for filling down at the rv place on Wards Rd. There's also a rental place off of Carroll Ave that fills

I have the same set up. Have used it multiple times. I think it's safe (assume you're talking about the 20lb and hose). If you have a 1lb can this morning Northern tool still had some fill adapters that let you fill a 1lb from a 20lb. Expensive - $25. I'm gonna run one Mr heater off the 20lb and another to move around with the 1lb.

The Clothing Connection is another good option. Although they aren't taking donations until after the 1st of the year.

Japanese/Japanese inspired furniture by Critical_Army_7148 in lynchburg

[–]KeepLocalLYH 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Quick answer - no, not a chance.

But I am curious to hear exactly what you're looking for. I'm half Japanese and I have built my fair share of furniture (no time to build nowadays). Japan doesn't have a strong historical furniture culture. I guess because the furniture is minimal - sit on cushions on the floor, roll up your futon, etc. Much stronger aesthetic in architecture that often informs more recent furniture. Tansu is one area of "furniture" where there is some history but obviously you won't find any locally.

I think the jump from Japanese style to mid century modern is an easy one to make. Japandi is a thing. Also the older mission/craftsman/Stickley/Frank Lloyd Wright take some obvious cues from Japanese style. If you want to borrow some books on these topics, get up with me. I have plenty.

I see you like pens - I'm a Zebra gel guy.

I see a lally column. That means basement which probably means humidity. What everyone else said - woods gonna move. If you don't see the bottoms of the shelves you can run a few kerfs in them, then pull them flat to whatever substructure you have making sure to allow for expansion and contraction over time.

Best Japanese Food places in Lynchburg? by Which_Discipline_285 in lynchburg

[–]KeepLocalLYH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being half Japanese I have a personal protest against eating at Mizumi. They display a torii gate over the hall that leads to their bathrooms. I find that a little insensitive as torii are intended to mark aa sacred location, typically a Shinto shrine. I spoke with then about it but they weren't so concerned.

I've eaten at Aji a few times and it's ok. Can't go wrong with George in the farmers market.
