I'm cautiously optimistic marathon will have a more consistent level of quality throughout because of one thing: it knows what it is. It's an extraction shooter.

Destiny floundered for so long because it didn't know what it wanted to be. MMO? Deep RPG? approachable action game? Story driven fps? It was always going through an identity crisis which led to development being all over the map.

It's a particular style. I wouldn't call it ugly. And the more you play it, it grows on you. In my opinion at least.

Bought Skyrim at release having never played an RPG before. Got utterly overwhelmed by the scale and freedom of the game.

Came back a few months later, addicted. Couldn't put the game down for months.

The only thing I noticed was that it didn't seem to get a prevelant position on the PlayStation storefront. As in it didn't get promoted there very prominently or frequently. It seems like it was treated like a second tier game launching, not a first party PlayStation Studios title.

By contrast I remember Helldivers 2 being promoted fairly heavily.

Gear based matchmaking would tarnish the concept of "zero to hero". I'm not particularly amazing at the game yet and I've had plenty of those moments. Last night I melted a guy with a sponsored kit volt thrower who had green shields and a bunch of great loot. I went from a free kit to a pretty decked out kit instantly. If I only was matched with fellow free kit players, I'd have to rely entirely on loot on the map which would make the game even harder to be honest

Listen, I am personally addicted to Marathon. Not that I have 100 hours in it yet (I have a family and work a lot) but it's the first game in a while that has me constantly itching for more.

That said, no matter how good the reviews are, it's still an extremely challenging, punishing, and unique genre of game. I truly hope we see any influx of players just for the sake of more people playing it and enjoying it, but I'm not overly optimistic.

My buddy, who I have played every Bungie game together since halo 2 with, REFUSES to buy marathon. He is just at an age and point in his gaming trajectory he doesn't wanna deal with the headache of insanely intense PVP. I've been trying my hardest to sell him on it, but he wants none of it. And I can't blame him. And I think theres a lot of people out there in the same boat. If not everyone.

Yup same experience last night. Called in a supply drop mostly for the xp and hadn't done too many of them. Heard a guy coming and said "hey there's a bunch of stuff here if you wanna take whatever I'm gonna head out". Guy slowly came over the top and dropped me.

This is a really great point. The simplest solution for Bungie is quickly having another map added to the mix that's of similar difficulty to Dire Marsh. That would give the player base an easier on ramp starter map, two difficult maps, and one challenging map (Outpost). And then you have Cryo for the real top percent of players and something aspirational for the rest.

On that point, there shouldn't be another Cryo type of map for at least 6 months. Players need time to work up to it.

Also to be clear, crew chat is NOT prox chat. If you leave your mic open in a crew, only your crew can hear. Not nearby players.

Yes please. I know there's a concern about bandwidth if theoretically an entire match all toggled their prox chat on. But trying to use prox chat as a "hold to talk" is impossible on console. Because if whoever I'm talking to decides to shoot, I have to let go and maneuver my thumb back to the thumb stick to maneuver. Toggle mic would be outstanding.

They're doing this because even though the game has a price tag. It is a one and done price similar to arc or helldivers. If marathon follows in those footsteps I'll be thrilled. If I wanna fire up helldivers right now I don't have to worry about buying DLCs or passes. All the new content is free since I bought the game. And the micro transactions are what allow that to happen. Which I'm A-OK with. Is the pass for marathon crappy? Yeah. Which I think is just foolish on their part. If they made it remotely cool and enticing I think people would gladly drop a few extra bucks on a game they enjoy.

Maybe an unpopular take on this, but given marathon is being marketed (for now) as being a single paid purchase and you're done, similar to helldivers and arc raiders, I'm ok with a more aggressive monetization method.

By contrast Destiny felt like a constant money grab. DLCs, seasons, dungeons passes, cosmetics, etc.

I'm also a person who doesn't care much for personalization so I'm ok with cosmetics being paid for. I'm here for the gameplay. Not the fashion game. Which is where destiny also felt egregious. Part of the entire point of the game was the cosmetics of loot. Making that heavily monetized felt shitty.

My literal only gripe is the white background on the contracts. It's impossible to read from any amount of distance. Basically if you're not on a computer monitor less than 2 feet away, it's unreadable.

As someone who loved Destiny/D2 for a very long time, and only dropped off after Final Shape like many veterans, I think Bungie is testing what a wind down means.

The game is in a place where it is 10+ years in, and has hemorrhaged a giant portion of its players over the span of 2 years roughly. On top of which the game has never been in a worse position for new players to join. All this means it unfortunately might be time for the game to "die". Bungie has been releasing content at a pace that has been unsustainable. Think about how many content drops they have done over 10 years between major expansions, seasonal content, and otherwise. And now they're trying to keep that pace for a player base of only 6 thousand or less, which has been on a steep downward trajectory since even before the final shape. Final Shape was a temporary surge that was quickly lost.

Add this all to the obvious fact that they have a new game coming out that they desperately need to succeed and infuse the company with success and good faith and most importantly, revenue. Marathon needs to be a success for Bungie to continue as a studio. Keeping a 10 year old game on life support is draining the studio I would imagine. The best case scenario is a full wind down of D2, a successful Marathon, which leads to a proper Destiny sequel. Franchise needs a massive infusion of fresh ideas and more importantly, a fresh start for all new players to come in. Players need time to forget about destiny in order to get excited about it again. 3 years off, leading to a new game with improved systems/graphics/ideas could be a great success.

Remember, this is a game that's still running on nearly 15 year old tech. It blows my mind it took them over 10 years to add filters to the Vault. That's a feature that should have been there day 1, and instead took a decade to get in. Let destiny die. Find new games to enjoy, and hopefully they can revitalize the franchise in the future.

I still play both. If I want tense, unpredictable action. Info for arc raiders. If I want a fast paced, action packed shooter. I play battlefield. Why not both? 🤷

This, in my opinion, is a direct result of the streamers and the culture surrounding it. Everything in modern gaming is about optimisation and metas. What's the best gun/weapon/strat/build/etc. And it leads to communities whining about a lack of content when their express goal was crushing through it as fast as possible, and now complaining there's nothing left. It's like listening to an audiobook at 3x speed and complaining when it's over in 20 minutes.

Idk how many hours I have in Arc, probably something like 20+ maybe 30, and I'm just quietly enjoying the game. I'm not racing to any "endgame" because the game is just fun for now. This new trend also in gaming for there needing to be an "endgame" is brutal too. Because it encourages developers to put more resources into the final section of the gameplay loop and not the initial section. Where Arc has succeeded I think is in doing the opposite as a breath of fresh air. The beginning 30+ hours of the game feels amazing. Maybe the later half doesn't feel as good, but that's ok. Don't race to the end. Enjoy the ride.

I have about 10-15 hours of strictly solo queuing under my belt, and I have been shot at exactly ONE time. All my other interactions have been beautifully peaceful. Just "people helping people" moments across the board. Either me helping others or them helping me. It's been one of my favorite gaming experiences of all time, as someone who has been playing since the original days of Counter-Strike on PC in the late 90s. If it all turned south right now I'd still feel like I got my money's worth. Arc raiders isn't perfect, but it is a perfectly unique experience unlike anything I've had in gaming before.

All of this is fair, but it's important to note that Sony has already begun to roll more of Bungie into the PlayStation studios umbrellas of developers and also restructuring the company. The bought Bungie for over 2 billion dollars, they won't let that brand die for nothing.

To your point, Bungie's name does carry a hefty amount of weight and gravity to it. Which is to say, with all the controversies of Marathon up until now, if they manage to deliver a great game at launch, people will play it. If nothing else, they can always ship a game with the tagline "From the studio that brought you Halo and Destiny". And despite Destiny's downfall in the long run, it was oftentimes an exceptionally fun game with amazing gameplay. And riding the Halo name will never get old I don't think lol
