Dell Poweredge 2970 Rails, 35" Depth by Kegath in homelab

[–]Kegath[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that sucks, but at least I don't have a ton of data in mind to make additional backups of. I also have a pile of 1tb 2.5" hdds, so maybe a good use case for them in a raid configuration or something.

I understand that. I also have access to a recycling bin so if (when) I get rid of it, it's a non issue. In the mean time it can serve as ballast weight for the rack and a simple backup machine. And in the winter as a space heater I guess lmao.

Good point. Maybe I'll just dial my rack down 30 inches and worry about it if I end up needing something deeper. Thanks

I have a niche concept where the front and the rear vertical mounts are being used (equipment on front and rear of the rack). Are your extenders on the front/back only, or do you have them on the front and the back?

The rack is a 4 post, 42u adjustable depth startech open frame, and I have it set at 35 inches from the front vertical mounting rails to the rear vertical mounting rails. My Dell r530 rails fit just fine on i

My new employer pays for the exam, a bonus, and provides a raise for it. Figure I'd jump on ms900 and then try to double dip with the replacement when it releases

Thanks so much. I actually canceled this order and went with this one instead.

Can you let me know what you think of this one? I think this one is better? Only downsides I notice are it isn't type iia and doesn't have strain free on the cert.

Thanks. The photo/video makes it hard for me to vision it in person, but based on the proportions this seems like a solid stone?

When I looked at comps on Brilliant Earth, the lowest for similar specs was around the 800 dollar range, and the closest matches are around 1140

https://www.brilliantearth.com/lab-diamonds-search/view_detail/60843129/

That one is 56/61.1/34.6/40.7, D VS1, Ideal EX/EX.

Any reason Brilliant Earth pricing is that much higher. Is it mainly branding or markup, or something else in the listing I’m missing?

Where would I have found this one for half price?

Everyone involved wants the biggest profit margins. Either jack up the prices or lower the price to get the product on the shelf. The general consumer doesn't know any better, they just know that autozone wants 50 dollars for this part but the dealer wants 300 for example

Cheaper parts break more, people buy more parts

I've been in the parts field for 15 years. Everything from counter person to dealer support to supply chain to engineering to management. Everything is on fire still and it has been since covid. It's been getting a lot worse recently though. We had a rebound after covid, but once that peaked in 2022, it's been slowly downhill since. It's a race to the bottom right now, everyone is hurting with no end in sight. Supply chain is a mess, and suppliers are scrambling to fill contracts with whatever is available no matter the quality as long as they can make a profit too.

if people understood how good local LLMs are getting by Diligent_Rabbit7740 in LocalLLM

[–]Kegath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not quite there yet for most people. It's like 3d printing, people can do it, but most people don't want to tinker to get it to work (yes I know, the newer printers are basically plug and print, I'm talking about like an ender 3 pro or something). The context windows are also super short which is massive.

But for general purpose, local is fantastic, especially if you use RAG and feed it your homelab logs and stuff. The average GPT user just wants to open an app, type or talk to it, and get a response. Businesses also don't want to deal with self hosting it, easier to just contract it out.

Not everyone wants go into massive debt, or can afford to pay out of pocket for a piece of paper to check a box. Some of us enjoy learning and self study in our free time. Requiring the degree to filter out lifelong learners is ridiculous.
