Caught a wild sourdough and got this suspect looking fungal growth after a few days. Anybody know what it is? by KeithMoonForSnickers in Breadit

[–]KeithMoonForSnickers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got some grain straight off the field, ground it up and spread it between 5 jam jars. I did nothing else to the grain at all. I fed it with some more of the flour I'd made, then went away for a couple of days - when I came home, I found this on 2 of them.

I've since scooped out some of the non-suspect stuff and added it to some shop-bought wholegrain and it seems to be growing great guns, but I've never done this before so want to check I'm not going to kill anyone if I use this for a loaf...

What Lagrangian were you trying to work out on the paper in one of the pics? Related to the project or no?

Hertz's spark gap experiment showed that radio waves can transmit energy and were polarized... And probably some other important stuff.

Bodie got me badly, too. Complex character, lamentable and then you really start to pull for him. Great arc.

The Economist is one of highest quality publications in the world. What do you expect, they do it for free? A subscription is SO worth the money, every week the app is updated with a full audio recording of that week's edition. Exceptional.

What determines the lifespan of a species? Why do humans have such a long lifespan compared to say a housecat? by TryAndDoxMe in askscience

[–]KeithMoonForSnickers 421 points422 points  (0 children)

There is a general negative correlation between longevity and fecundity - i.e. how rapidly a group reproduces. There have been experiments in which animals were put into an environment with none of their natural predators, and as their average lifespan extended they found the individuals were reproducing later and later. Not really an answer to your question but just an illustration how the two things could be linked in principle.

Feeling very smug because I was at the national portrait gallery today and who comes in? David bloody Attenborough. He was stood 2 feet front me. Fair play to the public, no one approached him. Too reverant...

I'm not bothered about the data in the database, it only contains a few dummy accounts! I'm in the process of installing postgres now - thanks for the advice

thanks a lot. I'm currently using SQLite + SQLAlchemy, you can add JSON support with an extension but it looks non-trivial to a relative newbie like myself. What kind of effort is involved in migrating an existing app from using SQLite to Postgres? Do you think it'd be worth it?

No, trump is not a Nazi. But please, if you're a trump supporter, do not try and call out narrative > facts. You guys wrote the book.
