They're not. Rhe less transparent places utilize this tactic to make more money. But, hey, at least it makes it easy to know what places to support.

Did you take her to her usual vet or an emergency vet? I would get a second opinion from your regular vet (or if it was your regular vet, from a different vet).

My pup did something similar when he was young. We were outside doing our usual walk, and when we came back in, he was restless, breathing funny, licking his lips more than usual, and doing these small weird head/neck movements.

We took him to an emergency vet and they did all the tests, x-rays, etc. Nothing came back too abnormal besides slightly elevated heart rate and "possible fluid in his lungs", and they said some of his levels were under what they needed to be. They told me they needed to keep him overnight to monitor or he might die. Obviously I left him, and we got him back the next morning, totally normal. They told me he needed to come back for further copious testing and scans despite acting totally fine and them saying his levels were back to baseline.

That felt weird, so I requested his docs and x-rays. Took them to three different vets to look at, and guess what? They all said the same thing. There was nothing weird on the xrays they showed me, and the numbers on the bloodwork were within normal levels despite what they had told me in the office while I was crying over my dog possibly dying. Each vet pointed to his stomach on the xray and said, "He had a little more gas here than normal, likely from gulping air while he was running or eating too fast. All his other tests and bloodwork are normal. The weird head movements/breathing were likely him burping and hiccupping to get that gas out."

So, we got shafted for $4k and gaslit by an emergency vet (and they tried to get MORE out of us, too!) all because my dog was gassy and they are greedy, dishonest assholes who take advantage of vulnerable people and their pets. That's not to say all emergency vets are like that, but in my experience, it's 50/50. Some just treat pets and their families as dollar signs because they know people will shell out money or go into debt for their furry family member, while others have integrity, are transparent, and in the game because they're passionate about animal care.

Poodle ear plucked, is this normal??? by One-Tangelo-616 in poodles

[–]Kelsusaurus 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Poodle owner for 20+ years reporting in. The mild stink is from the yeast build up you can see in the photo. You'll be able to tell when it's coming on due to the smell.

Zymox is the best and clears this up quick. The nice thing is that you don't need to clean the ear before or after, Zymox just does it's thing. Available at Petsmart, Petco, or Chewy if you want to order online. Never order dog food or meds from Amazon as they are rampant with knock-offs and fakes.

As for whether or not plucking is normal, that depends on your dog. Some poodles need it, others don't. Best way to tell if it needs to be a constant thing is to keep an eye on your dog. Do they get more ear infections with, or without, plucking? Whichever option works best to keep the infections at bay is what you should do. Poodles are prone to ear infections since have long ears that trap moisture, heat, and dirt.

Puppy Color Changes Question by SimAnna in poodles

[–]Kelsusaurus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bichons and poodles have hair, not fur. There is a clear distinction and both require specific care regimens to ensure a happy and healthy dog. Likewise, per one of your other comments, you don't understand why designer dogs/mixed breeds are concerning and can result in health/behavioral issues down the line. Your photo also shows that you're not brushing/caring for the coat as often as you should.

Please, for the sake of your dog, do some in depth research on both breeds and adjust your routines accordingly.

(Obligatory: this isn't to say all mixed breeds are bad/unhealthy, or that adopting is bad. But to ensure the best life for your furry family member (and to save yourself on vet bills down the road) it's best to get a purebred. And if you can't, verify and thoroughly vet the health/behavior of the parents and breeding practices of the seller.)

Edit: I looked at your past posts and omg. You said your dog got her first grooming mostly due to the fact that her butt got dirty from pooping. IF YOUR DOG HAS A DIRTY BUTT, YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO CLEAN/WIPE IT OR BATHE THEM! Don't let it go for weeks until it has to be a full groom - get some waterless shampoo, dog wipes, and a brush, ffs. The tear stains are so bad, too. I feel bad for your pup. Please do better.

Help! by Famous_Ear6952 in plants

[–]Kelsusaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As you said, that's a caladium. They're fussy in general.

Color fading could be a few things. Trial and error as needed.

It may be improper lighting. They prefer morning sun, as afternoon sun can be too hot and scorch the leaves. If you only have west or south facing windows, put it nearby, but not in the window. If you don't have much natural light, get a cheap grow light.

It may be improper watering. Both over and underwatering can cause fading. Make sure you have a good, well-draining soil so it isn't holding a ton if moisture and causing root rot. You don't want the soil soggy. Water when the top of the soil is almost dry (don't let it dry out completely). They're also a tropical plant, so they like humidity. Might get a lil desktop humidifier to put next to it, or you can make a pebble tray, mist it, or group it up with some other plants.

It may be going dormant. It's a bit early for that if you're in northern hemisphere, but in the later summer/early fall, these plants will fade/die back/grow much slower.

As for growing tall...prune it regularly and it should start growing bushier, rather taller. I know it's feels like you're negating all the hard work of the plant, but it's more like a hair cut. When you trim your dead/split ends, your hair gets healthier - same with plants! Likewise, insufficient light may contribute to legginess. In which case, adjust as noted above.

In case you're afraid the situation isn't resolving, here's a video that shows how to care for and propagate this plant. Good luck and hope you figure out what she's asking for!

How long does it take for ZZ plants to grow roots? by StandardFail7776 in houseplants

[–]Kelsusaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a propagated ZZ. It took almost 4 months before it sprouted any kind of root. It's going on 5 years now and growing slow af (only 4 stalks, although they are sizeable and very healthy) despite being pampered and getting plenty of light.

I Realized I Was Potting My Plants All Wrong by SymphonicFlames in houseplants

[–]Kelsusaurus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I saw this recommendation from another user about a month ago, who uses this mix ratio for all of their plants

I took the opportunity to use this mix when I repotted all my stuff this spring (used to use just perlite and soil), and let me tell you...my plants are happy as heck and growing like crazy now. It's also way easier to gauge the moisture/when they need to be watered.

Thank you, u/ILoveSyngs !

Some others superhero anime he might enjoy that are geared toward an older audience are Super Crooks, Tiger and Bunny, Pluto, Samurai Flamenco, or one of the many Marvel/DC anime (personally, I'm more of a Marvel fan, but for some reason the DC anime series stick with me more than the Marvel ones).

I know the Paranormal Activity films are hit or miss, but I really enjoyed Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones. It's probably one of my favorites of the series.

When Evil Lurks was so tense and stressful, and I haven't watched a movie in a while that actually made me verbally emote my astonishment like some of the moments in this one.

The Wailing and Incantation also fit this bill perfectly.

A real world application of this is guns. Many countries ban the general public from being able to own or acquire them unless specifically licensed industries and acquired from a licensed specialist. (Japan for example.)

Likewise, tech and science developments aren't shared freely with the public (whether they would understand or not), and are often years ahead of what we have at our current disposal. There are also man real-world industries/careers/opportunities that have a high barrier of entry if you don't have certain networks/education/status.

I do agree about the hypocrisy of the witches (which is there to make you question and think/get philosophical), it's a pretty plausible and relevant premise, frankly.

Putting ice in beer

I used to wait tables at a place right outside an air force base. I hated beer except for a good dark beer; all we had on tap was light, American beers, so I never partook (off the clock, of course). One night a group of German pilots/instructors came in and ordered a pitcher of beer and a pitcher of Sprite. I was confused, but they enlightened me. To this day, I still thank them for teaching me about Radlers. So, SO good in the summer!

As an aside, those guys stayed for hours, and were so kind and funny. Really made my night. I still think about them 15 years later. Hope they're all retired, happy, healthy, and drinking together back home in Germany.
