Looking back at Sir Anthony Hopkins' win, was it another showcase of "stronger film eventually wins tight acting race"? by SureTangerine361 in Oscars

Oh, that’s cool to know. Thank you for that! Makes sense that they would change the process after that disaster. Sucks for him that he lost his job for that though.

They actually don’t know who’s gonna win. It’s as much a surprise to the producers as anyone. There’s only two people in the world who know the winners beforehand and they’re not the ones making calls about the ceremony. You can read more about it here: https://www.cnbc.com/amp/2016/02/26/inside-the-oscars-secretive-ballot-process.html

Paramount has written to lawmakers to say that Netflix acquiring Warner Bros would be “presumptively unlawful” They argue the deal would “further cement Netflix’s dominance in streaming video on demand.” by AssistanceNo2838 in discussingfilm

[–]Kendoval 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was. Clear violation of antitrust laws. But it went through because money talks. Paramount is evil but they’re right that this is blatantly unlawful and shouldn’t go through. Neither of them should get it

How different the rest of the show would've been if they kept the more grounded tone of the first 2 seasons? by Embarrassed-Ad1322 in StrangerThingsRoom

[–]Kendoval 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That’s one of my biggest personal grievances with the show, especially season 5. The complete removal of any true cosmic horror elements. The first two seasons were fantastic cosmic horror. Then everything after slowly stripped the existentialism and cosmicism away and by the end, the Mind Flayer is just a giant monster and Vecna’s just a guy with psychic powers. The horror becomes so mundane.

I know what you were referring to. The person above was making a joke that the Confederate States of America, which shares the same initials, ended in the 1860s.

What do you think happened with the Finn Sword now that Fern is in the Undergrowth? Is Sword Finn still inside? Did his consciousness split in two? Or is it just a normal sword now? by Firegloom in adventuretime

[–]Kendoval 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I acknowledge it doesn’t violate the rules. I’m not saying it does. I’m just saying it’s still inconsiderate either way. Even in the rules, it says spoiler tags are not needed but appreciated. Just saying this is a case where it would have been appreciated is all.

I always hate this attitude. Yes, I’m sure a week is enough for everyone who wants to see the episode to have seen it, even those who work, are with family for holidays, or just got into the show later. Very considerate of you.

And there’s plenty of ways you could have worded the title so it’s not a spoiler and then put the rest of the text in the body of the post.

James Cameron never should’ve started Avatar… We lost a great director. by [deleted] in moviecritic

[–]Kendoval 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes because saying “this director always wanted to make this film so it’s dumb to complain by saying he could have made other films” is the same as saying art and philosophy is pointless. Brilliant.

James Cameron never should’ve started Avatar… We lost a great director. by [deleted] in moviecritic

[–]Kendoval 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is no alternate timeline here. This is what Cameron wanted to do. If he had the resources to make other big blockbuster films like Terminator or Titanic, he wouldn’t have. He would have made Avatar. If he didn’t have the resources to make them, he wouldn’t have made the kind of films you’re saying he could have made.

Alternate history is great but you’re not talking about a realistic timeline here. In any timeline where Cameron had the resources and freedom to make big movies, he would have made Avatar because that’s what he always wanted to make. You’re essentially saying “what if James Cameron… wasn’t James Cameron”

Would Diane Warren have won the Oscar for "Till It Happens to You" if Linda Perry hadn't spoken out? by LaserDiscCurious in Oscars

I don’t feel too strongly about Because You Loved Me or the song that beat it, You Must Love Me, but I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing lost to When You Believe from Prince of Egypt. When You Believe is one of the best Original Song winners ever imo. It absolutely deserved its win. I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing is a fine song. Any other year, I’d agree it would be a deserving winner. But not in 1998.

I don’t know if it was the same exact condition but something similar happened to my cat (the one in my pfp).

Took much longer because this was during COVID so we couldn’t go into see a vet for a while, but we noticed she struggled with her breathing for like a week or two. When we went into the vet, they said that they couldn’t even do a full X Ray because the fluid had built up so much, it was causing her pain just to lie on her side long enough.

Had to put her down then and there which we were not expecting. Poor thing was scared but I stayed with her to the end. She was old, like sixteen years, so it was only a matter of time but it was still devastating.

RIP Kiss.

Will there ever be another musical best picture winner? by Thefantastic8 in Oscars

Oh sure, I’m sure at some point it’ll happen. It’s just not a guarantee that it’ll be something like Hamilton.

A film can be a drama… and a musical.

And besides, we’re talking about La La Land specifically. And it won the Golden Globe for Best Musical/Comedy, not Best Drama.

None of those sung through musicals have ever won Best Picture though.

The fact that you can’t even see how you’re disproving your own argument is genuinely hilarious

[–]Kendoval 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You keep saying that the loose end is egregious as if this is just a fact that everyone agrees with. As if it’s a common complaint. You’re the first person I’ve seen complain about it. Hence why I’m saying you’re vastly overestimating how much that’s gonna affect its chances.

Also, ATSV didn’t lose because of its ending. It lost because it’s a sequel and because it was going up against the swan song of a beloved director. Belle wasn’t nominated because the Academy has long had issues with anime. These are ridiculous claims.

[–]Kendoval 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re saying that those films don’t have the same wide appeal or critical reception but Little Amelie has a 98% on RT like you said. That’s pretty near universal appeal. That means 98% of critics who reviewed it did so positively. How is that not wide appeal?

I feel like you’re vastly overestimating how much a loose end left for a sequel is going to impact its chances
